[The role of the personality in the feeding behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti

Attentional problems occur across multiple psychiatric disorders and are not specific for ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: Attentional problems are common and have been associated with multiple psychiatric disorders. This study examined problems of sustained attention across a range of psychiatric disorders using a validated computerized trans-diagnostic attentional paradigm (a continuous performance task). We hypothesized that multiple psychiatric disorders, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), would be associated with pronounced attentional problems. METHODS: Totally, 576 non-treatment seeking participants (aged 18-29 years) were enrolled from general community settings, prov

Psychiatric aspects of epilepsy.

Patients who have epilepsy face many challenges resulting from their illness and have frequent psychiatric comorbidities. Recognition of these disorders is increasing and is having a positive impact on patients' quality of life. Recent recommendations about a new classification system for psychiatric disorders related specifically to epilepsy and based on the relationship of symptoms to seizures, antiepileptic medications, and EEG changes should further research and treatment. Especially insofar psychiatric syndromes specific to epilepsy can be identified, correlation of clinical phenomena wit

Effects of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms on development of nicotine dependence from mid adolescence to young adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and smoking is well documented. However, it is unclear whether ADHD symptoms relate to nicotine dependence (ND) symptoms from adolescence to young adulthood. We sought to assess the relationship of ADHD Hyperactivity-Impulsivity (H/I) and Inattention (I) symptoms with ND symptoms in a community sample from adolescence to young adulthood (ages 18-21). METHODS: Participants were adolescents (n = 672) smoking at least one whole cigarette in their lifetime. Participants are members of a prospective cohort study (ages 1

Gambling and substance use disorders: current status and future directions.

This paper briefly reviews the clinical presentation of pathological gambling and presents data related to the co-occurrence of pathological gambling and substance use disorders. Both epidemiological and treatment data are reviewed. The putative physiological substrates underlying pathological gambling are described, along with the limited genetics data. Types of treatments applied to gamblers are described, including data on efficacy and overlap of issues that relate to both gambling and substance use disorders. Finally, areas for future research are suggested to advance our understanding of

From Inner Sense to Outer Action: Interoception and Impulsive Compulsive Behavior Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive-compulsive behavior disorders (ICBDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) include impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compulsive behaviors, often linked to dopaminergic treatment and altered reward processing. Interoception, the perception of internal bodily signals, plays a key role in emotional regulation and decision-making. Neuroimaging studies suggest that alterations in interoceptive and reward-related brain circuits may underlie ICDs in PD. However, the relationship between interoception and ICDs remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between i

Comparing behavioral measures of aggression in the laboratory: Taylor Aggression Paradigm versus Point-Subtraction Aggression Paradigm.

Aggression refers to a wide range of behaviors with lasting individual and societal consequences. Recurrent, unplanned aggressive behavior is the core diagnostic criterion for intermittent explosive disorder (IED). In this study, we compared two behavioral measures of aggression in the laboratory: the Taylor Aggression Paradigm (TAP) and the Point-Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP). This sample (n = 528) included community participants who met DSM-5 criteria for IED (n = 156), met DSM-5 criteria for a nonaggressive psychiatric disorder (n = 205), or did not meet DSM-5 criteria for any psyc

Firearm ownership among young adults: Associations with impulsivity and impulse control disorders.

BACKGROUND: Firearm ownership is extremely common in parts of the United States. Yet little research has examined whether it is associated with impulsive symptoms and traits. METHODS: Adults age 18 to 29 who gamble at least occasionally were recruited in 2 cities in the United States using media advertisements for an exploratory study examining general mental health, impulse control disorders, impulsive personality, and aspects of cognition (decision-making, response inhibition, and flexible responding). The participants were grouped as firearm owners and non-firearm owners; these 2 groups we

Management of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: Controversies and future approaches.

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease are a group of impulsive behaviors most often associated with dopaminergic treatment. Presently, there is a lack of high quality evidence available to guide their management. This manuscript reviews current management strategies, before concentrating on the concept of dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome and its implications for the management of impulse control disorders. Further, we focus on controversies, including the role of more recently available anti-parkinsonian drugs, and potential future approaches involving routes of drug delivery, n

Impulse control disorder in Parkinson's disease is associated with abnormal frontal value signalling.

Dopaminergic medication is well established to boost reward- versus punishment-based learning in Parkinson's disease. However, there is tremendous variability in dopaminergic medication effects across different individuals, with some patients exhibiting much greater cognitive sensitivity to medication than others. We aimed to unravel the mechanisms underlying this individual variability in a large heterogeneous sample of early-stage patients with Parkinson's disease as a function of comorbid neuropsychiatric symptomatology, in particular impulse control disorders and depression. One hundred an

Aripiprazole and Other Third-Generation Antipsychotics as a Risk Factor for Impulse Control Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests an association between third-generation antipsychotics (TGAs) and impulse control disorders (ICDs). This is thought to be due to their partial agonism of dopamine receptors. However, neither the relative nor absolute risks of ICDs in those prescribed TGAs are well established. To inform clinical practice, this systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes and quantifies the current evidence for an association. METHODS: An electronic search of Medline, PsychINFO, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Clinical Trials Database was undertaken from database inception t

Delay discounting in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Delay discounting refers to the depreciation of the value of a reward as a function of the time it takes to obtain it. Growing evidence shows altered delay discounting in several pathological conditions, including neurological disorders. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the published literature on delay discounting (DD) in Parkinson's Disease (PD). We found steeper DD in patients with PD, compared to healthy controls, both in "on" and "off" dopaminergic medication. These results confirm altered DD in PD and suggest an independent influence of the dopaminergic medicat

Exploring the underlying mechanisms of drug-induced impulse control disorders: a pharmacovigilance-pharmacodynamic study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders (e.g. pathological gambling, hypersexuality) may develop as adverse reactions to drugs. Pathogenetic hypotheses have mainly focused on D3-receptor agonism, and switching to alternatives with different pharmacologic mechanisms represents a common management strategy. Nonetheless, treatment failure is common and gaining pathophysiological insights is needed. AIM: We aimed to identify targets potentially contributing to pathologic impulsivity. METHOD: We performed a pharmacovigilance-pharmacodynamic study on dopamine agonists and antipsychotics using the

Objective assessment of impulse control disorder in patients with Parkinson's disease using a low-cost LEGO-like EEG headset: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) can develop impulse control disorders (ICDs) while undergoing a pharmacological treatment for motor control dysfunctions with a dopamine agonist (DA). Conventional clinical interviews or questionnaires can be biased and may not accurately diagnose at the early stage. A wearable electroencephalogram (EEG)-sensing headset paired with an examination procedure can be a potential user-friendly method to explore ICD-related signatures that can detect its early signs and progression by reflecting brain activity. METHODS: A stereotypical Go/NoGo test

Disrupted reward processing in Parkinson's disease and its relationship with dopamine state and neuropsychiatric syndromes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and predict poorer outcomes. Reward processing dysfunction is a candidate mechanism for the development of psychiatric symptoms including depression and impulse control disorders (ICDs). We aimed to determine whether reward processing is impaired in PD and its relationship with neuropsychiatric syndromes and dopamine replacement therapy. METHODS: The Ovid MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase and PsycInfo databases were searched for articles published up to 5 November 2020. Studies reporting reward processing task performance by pa

Instantaneous Respiratory Response of Gamer with High-Risk Internet Gaming Disorder during Game-Film Stimuli by Using Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition.

Gamers with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) dynamically regulate their psychophysiological responses during playing; however, analyzing instantaneous psychophysiological responses in these gamers has been limited by a lack of appropriate methods. We propose combining the Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition and Direct Quadrature methods to overcome this limitation. The related effect of abdominal breathing (AB) training (as a relaxing psychology method) on the distribution of instantaneous frequency (IF) was investigated by calculating median (IFmed), kurtosis (IFkurt) and skewne

Brain Imaging and Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parkinson's disease (PD) has a wide spectrum of symptoms including the presence of psychiatric disease. At present, most treatment plans, comprised of dopaminergic drugs, are chronic and complex. Though dopaminergic agents are quite efficient in managing the motor aspects of the disease, chronic pharmacotherapy specifically with dopamine receptor agonists has been highly linked to the occurrence of Impulse Compulsive disorder (ICD), which can be problematic for individual patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Much of what is known today about PD-related ICD stems from brain imaging st

Ambiguities in existing Iranian national policies addressing excessive gaming.

Considering the scarcity of available science and controversies around effective policies addressing gaming disorder and its health-related consequences, Király et al. have conducted a systematic review on current evidence regarding this issue. We, a group of researchers in this field, would like to express our perspective from Iran. With rapid growth of gaming, Iran seems to be facing some specific policy issues and challenges, which are going to be reviewed in this short commentary.
