Each year, millions of people experience an episode of diverticulitis, accompanied by abdominal pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, and expensive healthcare utilization. Rates of recurrence following recovery from an episode are high, ranging from 20 to 50% depending on how this is measured. A number of dietary and lifestyle factors have been found to be associated with an increased risk of developing incident diverticulitis; while these have been suggested to play a role in preventing recurrence, there is limited evidence to support this claim. Clinicians often recommend a high fiber diet after

Acquired small intestinal diverticulitis and its complications remain poorly understood due to their rarity and nonspecific presentation. Complications such as abdominal sepsis, bleeding, and perforation can lead to unfavorable outcomes. We report the case of a patient who presented with acute jejunal diverticulitis requiring surgical intervention. A 66-year-old man with a history of endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair presented with acute left lower quadrant abdominal pain and tenderness. Computed tomography (CT) detected intestinal diverticulosis, localized free air, and inflammato

INTRODUCTION: Diverticular disease (DD) of the colon has a number of phenotypes, including asymptomatic diverticulosis and complicated diverticulitis with bowel perforation or bleeding. The factor that affects the phenotype of this condition and leads to a wide range of clinical presentations is unknown. The formation of fistulas associated with diverticulitis has long been recognized, and they are treated according to ad hoc indications. We hypothesized that the formation of fistulas in diverticular disease exhibits such a wide range of variable anatomic features that it may be considered a d

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of colonic diverticulosis has risen significantly. Diverticular disease is the most frequent cause of colovesical fistulas, which are uncommon complications of diverticulitis. Clinical signs, such as fecaluria and pneumaturia, are typically required to confirm its presence. Finding the cause of the disease so that the proper therapy can be started is the primary goal of a diagnostic workup rather than observing the fistula tract itself. Case Presentation. We present a 43-year-old man complaining of frequent urinary tract infections for six months. On CT abdomen and

Appendicular diverticulitis (AD) is a rare entity characterized by the inflammation of the arising diverticulum of the appendix. It has been reported to carry a high risk of perioperative complications, such as bleeding and perforation. Furthermore, multiple articles have highlighted the importance of diagnosing AD early due to its strong association with malignancies. Limited published cases concerning AD in our country and globally are available in the literature. Hence, we present in this article a case series of five exciting cases of incidental findings of AD that were initially diagnosed

Diverticular disease is a common condition responsible for significant costs to the healthcare system in the Western world. It ranges from asymptomatic diverticulosis to complicated diverticulitis. Here, we present a unique case of recurrent, complicated diverticulitis in a 62-year-old Caucasian male. Within a span of one year, he was hospitalized six times with diverticulitis before undergoing elective sigmoid colon resection. Imaging showed diverticulitis of distal descending and proximal sigmoid colon with sealed perforation, recurrent abscesses, and formation of colocutaneous fistulas. Dur

Mesothelioma is an uncommon type of cancer arising from the mesothelial cells that form the lining of several cavities in the body. Exposure to asbestos is the leading known cause of mesothelioma. We present a 73-year-old male with a significant asbestos exposure and a recent history of recurrent diverticulitis who reported persistent left lower quadrant (LLQ) pain despite several courses of empiric antibiotic therapy. A recent computed tomography (CT) performed due to nonresolving symptoms showed possible nodularity of the mesentery and subsequent positron emission tomography (PET) scan demon

Although toothpick ingestion is rare, it can lead to fatal complications in the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosing toothpick ingestion is difficult because most patients do not recall swallowing one. We report 2 cases of toothpick-ingestion-induced colon injury, mimicking diverticulitis. The first patient was a 47-year-old male who had received conservative treatment under the impression of his having diverticulitis in the cecum. Ultrasonography revealed a linear foreign body in the right lower abdomen; a subsequent laparoscopic examination revealed inflammation around the cecum, but no eviden

Diverticular disease (DD) can have different presentations, including chronic colitis. However, diverticular disease-associated colitis (DAC) is a separate entity that can be associated with a granulomatous inflammation. DAC usually affects the left colon with no involvement of the cecum and the ascending colon. In this setting, Crohn's disease is high in the differential diagnosis. Although granulomatous colitis associated with diverticulosis has been previously described, this is the first case affecting the right colon to be reported in the English literature according to our search of the

Diverticulitis is much less common in the jejunum than in colonic diverticula probably because of diverticulum larger size, better intra-luminal flow and relatively sterile jejunal content. Complications of jejunal diverticulitis are acute intestinal obstruction, diverticular bleeding and mainly perforation with mesenteric abscess, localized or generalized peritonitis. The Multi-detector row computed tomography is now the best diagnostic imaging for small bowel diverticulitis as well as its complications. Magnetic resonance enterography is also quite useful but it is still impractical to resor

Guidelines for diverticular disease management were last supported and published by the American Gastroenterology Association and the American College of Gastroenterology 2 decades ago. Guidelines have been published in other countries and by some societies. These guidelines are suggested as United States of America guidelines. In reality, they are what is practiced in Connecticut at Yale New Haven hospitals. The epidemiology and pathophysiology is described. This is still considered a dietary fiber-deficiency disease that results in high intracolonic pressure with resultant outpocketing of di

Acute diverticulitis is a painful disease of the colon characterized by peridiverticular inflammation and/or infection. The spectrum of acute diverticulitis ranges from isolated peridiverticular inflammation all the way to free perforation with purulent or feculent peritonitis. Among gastrointestinal disorders, acute diverticulitis is one of the most common diagnoses in the ambulatory setting and principal hospital discharge diagnoses. Acute diverticulitis accounts for substantial utilization of healthcare resources and is a detriment to patients' quality of life. In the last decade, several c

The article presents the recent data of individual studies and meta-analyses of the frequency of relapses after one, two or more episodes of acute colon diverticulitis, lits different opinions about the predictors of the recurrent course of the disease. The bigger part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the results of different variants of anti-recurrent treatment of diverticulitis with the assessment of the effectiveness of therapy, with the conclusion that today the problem of the most effective method of treatment exists.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, treatment of acute diverticulitis has mostly been based on inpatient care. The question arises whether these patients can be treated on an outpatient basis as the admissions for diverticular disease have been shown to be increasing every year. We studied whether outpatient treatment of acute uncomplicated diverticulitis is feasible and safe, and which patients could benefit from outpatient care.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in two teaching hospitals using hospital registry codes for diverticulitis. All patients diagnosed with a

BACKGROUND: Few cases have been reported in children and adolescents of sigmoid diverticulitis. Most of the case reports in medical literature are associated with true congenital diverticula and genetic diseases of collagen synthesis.
CLINICAL CASE: 13 year-old female who was admitted to General and Endoscopic Surgery service with diagnosis of complicated appendicitis. Laparotomy was performed finding complicated sigmoid diverticular disease. Lavage, sigmoidectomy and primary anastomosis were performed. The histopathological findings reported a perforated pseudo-diverticulum of the sigmoid co

PURPOSE: Diverticulitis of vermiform appendix is known as a rare cause of acute appendicitis, most of which are diagnosed after surgery. We compared appendiceal diverticulitis with acute appendicitis to study the clinical characteristics of appendiceal diverticulitis.
METHODS: Among 1,029 patients who received appendectomy from January 2009 to May 2011, 38 patients with appendiceal diverticulitis (diverticulitis group) were compared with 98 randomly collected patients with acute appendicitis (appendicitis group) during the same period. Patients' characteristics, clinical features, laboratory

Caecal diverticulitis is an uncommon phenomenon in western countries. The clinical diagnosis is often difficult as it mimics other acute abdominal conditions like appendicitis, colitis or neoplasia. Diagnosis is often made at operation. Operative strategy has been controversial and there is no broad consensus emerging. We report the case of a 71-year-old woman, known to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, who presented acutely with right iliac fossa pain. A clinical diagnosis of appendicitis was made. At laparoscopy, a solitary, inflamed, gangrenous caecal diverticulum was found. A lap
