Components of Psychosocial Treatments for Perinatal Mental Health Problems in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings: A Scoping Review.

Perinatal mental health problems (PMHP) are a critical public health concern, profoundly affecting mothers and their infants by impairing maternal well-being and mother-infant bonding. The burden is especially high in conflict-affected settings, where trauma, violence, and ongoing adversity amplify risk. This scoping review mapped the existing literature to identify core components, delivery methods, and structures of psychosocial treatments for PMHP in conflict and post-conflict regions, and examined how trauma and violence were addressed. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance, 150 studi

Observed effects of improvisational theater on personal growth: A scoping review.

Drama has long been used as a modality for promoting personal growth; still, new approaches continue to emerge. This scoping review aimed to chart evidence on the administration of improvisational theater (a form of unscripted performance) for personal growth and to identify directions for future research and practice. Conducted in line with Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines, this review included empirical studies examining the effects of theatrical improv on personal growth, with no limitations on participants, regions, or publication periods. Systematic searches of four databases (Psy

Associations between television viewing and love styles: an interpretation using cultivation theory.

This study evaluated the associations between television viewing and love styles. The Love Attitudes Scale (LAS), based on Lee's love style taxonomy, was administered to a sample of 338 unmarried Israeli students along with questions about TV viewing habits, current involvement in a serious romantic relationship, and marital intentions. A confirmatory factor analysis of the LAS indicated that the expected six-factor solution adequately fit the data. Correlations between individual love styles and TV viewing were small to moderate, ranging from .12 to .29. Scores for Ludus love style correlated

Creative arts therapies for stroke patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and mortality worldwide. Survivors can experience a range of physical and emotional challenges, often leading to depression, anxiety, and a poorer quality of life. Creative arts therapies (CATs), an umbrella term encompassing music, art, dance/movement, drama, and creative writing therapies, have increasingly been explored in stroke survivor populations as interventions to improve psychological outcomes. Qualitative analysis suggests these therapies can be helpful, but the exact efficacy of CATs in stroke rehabilitation, as well a

Music enhances activity in the hypothalamus, brainstem, and anterior cerebellum during script-driven imagery of affective scenes.

Music is frequently used to establish atmosphere and to enhance/alter emotion in dramas and films. During music listening, visual imagery is a common mechanism underlying emotion induction. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined the neural substrates of the emotional processing of music and imagined scene. A factorial design was used with factors emotion valence (positive; negative) and music (withoutMUSIC: script-driven imagery of emotional scenes; withMUSIC: script-driven imagery of emotional scenes and simultaneously listening to affectively congruent music)

The first OSCE; does students' experience of performing in public affect their results?

BACKGROUND: Personal qualities have been shown to affect students' exam results. We studied the effect of experience, and level, of public performance in music, drama, dance, sport, and debate at the time of admission to medical school as a predictor of student achievement in their first objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). METHODS: A single medical school cohort (n = 265) sitting their first clinical exam in 2011 as third year students were studied. Pre-admission statements made at the time of application were coded for their stated achievements in the level of public performanc

The history of trauma in psychiatry.

The accidental separation of PTSD and the dissociative disorders, based on the unfortunate fact that the PTSD and the dissociative disorder workgroups of the DSM-III never met to compare data, and the lack of knowledge within the workgroups of existing research connecting these disorders, will continue in the DSM-IV. That separation, however, is slowly being eroded by a solid body of research that shows that these conditions rarely occur independently. Thus, contemporary research is beginning to show that the original concept of "hysteria," formulated 150 years ago to capture a group of patien

Dramatic Performance by a Professional Actor for the Treatment of Patients with Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) challenge caregivers, leading to caregiver burden and subsequent nursing home or inpatient placement in a psychiatric hospital for dementia. Favorable positive emotions should be an important goal for the treatment of negative emotions of BPSD. Arts are one of the most profound areas to stimulate favorable emotions. We have asked a professional actor, who was not involved in the daily care and regular rehabilitations, to give a dramatic performance by reading selected stories as if the patients with BPSD felt to be in the audiences of a

Sun protection training based on a theater play for preschoolers: an effective method for imparting knowledge on sun protection?

Sun protection in childhood is important to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. The "Periods-of-Life-Program" for primary prevention of skin cancer introduces a combination of individual and environmental interventions for the preschool period. Within this pilot study, an intervention group received cognitive-behavioral and environmental interventions. A control group had solely received the environmental intervention, and a wait-control group received no intervention. Nursery school children (n = 80, 3 to 6 years of age) of four nursery schools were randomly assigned to t

Update in podocyte biology: putting one's best foot forward.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The rapidly developing field of podocyte cell biology is reviewed, focusing on papers published in the last 12 months. RECENT FINDINGS: Four areas of particular progress can be discerned. First, podocytes proliferate during early metanephric development, are quiescent after the capillary loop stage, and re-enter the cell cycle only in the disease group termed collapsing glomerulopathy. We have learned that control of the podocyte cell cycle involves both expression of cell-cycle regulating proteins and the process of cytokinesis. Second, the podocyte slit diaphragm is the f

Behind the fence forum theater: an arts performance partnership to address lupus and environmental justice.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a method to improve environmental quality in communities primarily inhabited by minorities or low-income families. The Buffalo Lupus Project was a CBPR partnership formed to explore the relationship between a local waste site and high rates of lupus. The "Behind the Fence" Community Environmental Forum Theater project was able to successfully funnel the results of scientific research and ongoing activities to the community by utilizing a Forum Theater approach, image-making techniques, an interactive workshop, and energetic public performance. An evaluation of an education programme on HIV infection using puppetry and street theatre.

'Puppets Against AIDS' is a novel educational medium being used to try to reduce the spread of HIV infection in South Africa. It involves the use of street theatre employing two-metre-high puppets who act out a story of how one person, who is infected with HIV, passes it onto a series of other people until he eventually dies. The puppet show was evaluated in two phases. The first involved a content analysis of a video recording of the show by a multidisciplinary group, according to a set of criteria for appropriate education on HIV infection. This show was found to be professional and comprehe

Toward a better death: applying Burkean principles of symbolic action to interpret family adaptation to Karen Ann Quinlan's coma.

This article considers the manner that families come to accept the collapse of identity in a family member who has entered a medical crisis with no hope of returning from it. The transformation is regarded as a "right of passage" and is characterized in terms of both the conditions that bring about resistance to the passage as well as the sorts of symbolic activities that ultimately allow the transformation to occur. The theoretical source that is used to discuss both these issues is Kenneth Burke's (1969) theory of Dramatism, regarded herein as a template that guides both interpersonal action

Under pressure program: using live theatre to investigate adolescents' attitudes and behavior related to drug and alcohol abuse education and prevention.

This paper describes the Under Pressure Program, an innovative communication-centered approach designed to involve Chicago public junior and senior high school students in considering the problems and prevention of adolescent substance abuse. The centerpiece of the program is a 30-minute live musical play, Captain Clean, which incorporates extensive postperformance dialogue and role play to explore the pressures and feelings of adolescents regarding substance abuse. This unique blend of live entertainment and applied learning techniques enables adolescents to understand the pressures they face

Cost-effectiveness evaluation of a radio campaign to improve full vaccination coverage among children under-five in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Achieving timely childhood vaccination is a challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A three-month intervention called 10 + 10 + 30 involved 10-minute serial radio drama on vaccination, 10-minute community health worker discussion, and a 30-minute phone-in by listeners was implemented in Jimma Zone, Ethiopia. The goal was to increase childhood vaccination and improve child health outcomes. There is limited evidence of the cost-effectiveness of a radio-only intervention on childhood vaccination in LMICs. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the cost-effectiveness

Community-based alcohol education intervention (THEATRE) study to reduce harmful effects of alcohol in rural Sri Lanka: design and adaptation of a mixed-methods stepped wedge cluster randomised control trial.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption is a leading cause of mortality, morbidity and adverse social sequelae in Sri Lanka. Effective community-based, culturally adapted or context-specific interventions are required to minimise these harms. We designed a mixed-methods stepped wedge cluster randomised control trial of a complex alcohol intervention. This paper describes the initial trial protocol and subsequent modifications following COVID-19. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We aimed to recruit 20 villages (approximately n=4000) in rural Sri Lanka. The proposed intervention consisted of health screening cl

Se-duction is not sex-duction: Desexualizing and de-feminizing hysteria.

The psychopathological analysis of hysteria is a victim of narrow conceptualizations. Among these is the inscription of hysteria in the feminine sphere, about body and sexuality, which incentivized conceptual reductionism. Hysteria has been mainly considered a gendered pathology, almost exclusively female, and it has been associated with cultural and/or religious features over time rather than treated as a psychopathological world. Further, hysteria has been dominated by conceptual inaccuracies and indecision, not only in terms of clinical features but also in terms of its definition. For this
