BACKGROUND: Most people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) do not receive treatment. Few digital evidence-based treatments have been tested among community-based samples of people with AUD. The present trial of Computer-Based Training for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT4CBT) (1) assessed CBT4CBT usability and acceptability and (2) explored alcohol-related outcomes by study condition in a non-treatment sample of people with AUD.
METHODS: For the current two-arm clinical trial, a non-treatment sample of people with lifetime AUD and current heavy drinking was recruited using ResearchMatch.org and

OBJECTIVE: Protective behavioral strategies (PBS) may be less effective in certain contexts, as high-risk situations and structural disadvantage can undermine individuals' ability to implement these strategies. Pregaming and drinking games are common among adolescents and young adults and linked to rapid consumption and greater consequences, while neighborhood disadvantage reflects structural stressors and limited resources that may heighten risk. The present study examined the moderating effects of pregaming, drinking games, and neighborhood disadvantage on daily associations between PBS (lim

Adolescent drinking behaviors and mental health issues are growing public health concerns closely linked to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This 12-month longitudinal study examined whether resilience and self-concept properties mediate the associations of childhood poly-adversity with adolescent drinking behaviors and mental health issues. Participants included 289 adolescent-parent/guardian dyads from public junior high schools in southern Taiwan. Adolescents completed self-report measures at three time points to assess ACEs, resilience, self-concept properties, and behavioral and ment

The ventral striatum is crucially involved in reward processing. The present study investigates the behavioral effects of astrocyte-specific calcium extrusion virus "CalEx" on perseverative responses in the operant five-choice serial reaction time task and ethanol-conditioned place preference. Mice were injected with CalEx via the GfaABC1D promoter to extrude cytosolic calcium from astrocytes within the ventral striatum. We found that CalEx transfection in the ventral striatum reduced evoked response duration, the maximum amplitude, and the response frequency to 500 μM ATP as measured by ΔF/F

RATIONALE: Binge drinking during adolescence is associated with a higher risk of developing Alcohol Use Disorders and impaired stress reactivity in adulthood. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis matures during adolescence and is under strict GABAergic control. Yet, how early binge drinking alters GABAergic signaling in this region, and whether these changes contribute to later-life disruptions in stress reactivity, remain unknown.
OBJECTIVES: Our goal with these set of experiments was to test the hypothesis that adolescent binge drinking would impair maturation of GABAergic signaling in t

In 2016, more than 90% of HIV diagnoses among young men aged 13-19 years were attributed to male-male sexual contact. Little is known about how binge drinking and non-injection drug use may be associated with risky sexual behavior among adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM). Using data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance, we examined how binge drinking and non-injection drug use may be associated with sexual risk among ASMM. ASMM were recruited for interviews in 3 cities: Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. Among 16-18-year-olds (N = 488), we evaluated the association between

PURPOSE: Access to mental health care services and the impact on substance use among cancer survivors has not been well-defined. Patients with cancer may be at particular risk of mental health challenges and excessive alcohol consumption. We sought to characterize the impact of mental health care access on drinking behaviors among cancer survivors.
METHODS: Data on cancer survivors were obtained from the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program from the Basics, Overall Health, and the personal and family health history surveys. The association of access to mental health care a

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a chemical class widely used in industrial and commercial applications because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Between 2013 and 2016 PFAS were detected in public water systems and private wells in El Paso County, Colorado. The contamination was likely due to aqueous film forming foams used at a nearby Air Force base.
OBJECTIVE: To cross-sectionally describe the serum concentrations of PFAS in a highly exposed community, estimate associations with drinking water source, and explore potential demographic and behavioral

One in five Latino men who have sex with men has experienced child sexual abuse. Although concerning in itself, child sexual abuse may increase an individuals' likelihood of depression and risk-taking in adult life, including engagement in HIV risk behaviors and alcohol and substance use. It is therefore urgent that researchers and practitioners better understand the long-term effects of child sexual abuse. We utilized logistic and linear regression to assess associations between child sexual abuse (operationalized as forced or coerced sexual activity before age 17) and depression, sexual beha

Low health literacy is associated with risky alcohol use among young people, particularly those exposed to social and environmental factors that normalize drinking. In digital contexts, innovative and engaging interventions are needed to strengthen alcohol-preventive competencies among hazardous drinkers. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an online health literacy promotion program integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and gamification in improving health literacy and alcohol-preventive behaviors among hazardous-drinking vocational students. A quasi-experimental two-group pre-test-p

In Brazil, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is currently available for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. As PrEP use depends on an individual's perceived risk, we explored pathways by which potentially modifiable behaviors lead to high perceived HIV risk. Using online surveys (N = 16,667), we conducted a path analysis on the basis of ordered sequences of multivariate logistic regressions. High perceived HIV risk was low (26.3%) compared to condomless receptive anal sex (41.4%). While younger age increased the odds of binge drinking and of condomless receptive anal sex, it was

Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) consumption has garnered considerable attention in the literature in recent years. Drinking AmED beverages has been associated with a host of negative outcomes. The present study sought to examine associations between AmED consumption and high-risk sexual behaviors in a sample of young adults. Participants (N=704; 59.9% female) completed an online survey assessing AmED consumption, other drug use, and sexual behavior. A total of 19.4% of the entire sample (and 28.8% of those who reported using alcohol) reported consuming AmED. Participants who reported co
