Effects of a secondary mental task and additional auditory feedback on body movements and EEG.

Previous studies have shown that additional cognitive load from a secondary task can adversely affect movement performance. However, how externally provided auditory pacing influences motor and neural responses under dual-task conditions remains unclear. This study employed a repeated-measures experimental design, studying eighteen young adults (Mean age 23.5 ± 4 years) who underwent three conditions: (1) foot tapping only (single task), (2) foot tapping and a mental task (dual task), and (3) foot tapping, mental task, and auditory pacing biofeedback (dual task + biofeedback). Ankle joint move

Age-related changes in sustained visual attentional modulation of audiovisual integration.

Audiovisual integration (AVI) depends on dynamic interactions between multisensory neural systems and attentional processes. However, it remains unclear how sustained attentional demands modulate this interaction, particularly in aging, where declines in sensory processing and attentional capacity may alter the efficiency of these neural mechanisms. Here, 23 younger adults and 22 older adults completed a dual-task paradigm combining an audiovisual discrimination task (to assess AVI) with a multiple object tracking task (to manipulate sustained attentional load). Results revealed that younger a

Altering sensory cues for spatial navigation does not impose a dual-task effect on gait and balance.

Walking draws from a limited pool of attentional resources. Dual-task assessments, where individuals perform a cognitive task while walking, often reveal changes in gait and balance due to competing attentional demands. As cognitive task difficulty increases, the resources necessary to complete the task also increase, causing greater interference with gait and balance. However, these interactions are typically examined using contrived tasks, such as mental arithmetic, that do not often occur during walking. Therefore, it is unclear how the cognitive processes commonly engaged during walking in

Reliability and Minimal Detectable Change of the Standardized Assessment of Reaction Time.

CONTEXT: Postconcussion reaction time deficits are common, but existing assessments lack sport-related applicability. We developed the Standardized Assessment of Reaction Time (StART) tool to emulate the simultaneous cognitive and motor function demands in sport, but its reliability is unestablished. OBJECTIVES: To determine the intrarater, interrater, and test-retest reliability of StART and to examine the dual-task effect, time effect, and relationships between StART and computerized and laboratory-based functional reaction time assessments. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Clin

Dual Task Performance Is Associated with Amyloidosis in Cognitively Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) provides an opportunity for the study and implementation of interventions and strategies aimed at delaying, mitigating, and preventing AD. While this preclinical state is an ideal target, it is difficult to identify efficiently and cost-effectively. Recent findings have suggested that cognitive-motor dual task paradigms may provide additional inference. OBJECTIVES: Investigate the relationship between dual task performance and amyloidosis, suggestive of preclinical Alzheimer's disease and whether dual task performance provides additional inform

Does Inspiratory Threshold Loading and Visual Tasking Affect Visual Attention Accuracy?

OBJECTIVE: Dyspnea is commonly experienced in adults who are young and have different health conditions (asthma, obesity, panic disorders) and may impede not only physical exertion but also cognitive function such as visual attention. To test this, visual attention was evaluated using the Multiple Object Tracking Test (MOT) alone and combined with low or moderate inspiratory threshold loading (ITL). METHODS: Using a pretest-posttest design, we evaluated 25 participants who were healthy and 19 to 31 years old. Visual attention accuracy was quantified using the MOT, wherein participants tracked

The interactive effect of cognitive and physical dual task interventions on obstacle negotiation while walking in healthy young, and older, adults.

CONTEXT: Dual task performance affects obstacle crossing ability in older adults. Previous studies suggest that cognitive dual tasking can lead to changes in obstacle crossing performance in older adults, but there is a lack of evidence to support changes in obstacle crossing performance due to the influence of motor dual tasking. AIMS: To investigate the interaction of cognitive and motor tasks, on obstacle crossing performance, in healthy young and older adults. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This is a cross sectional comparative study, conducted at Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand. METHODS AND M

Effectiveness and cost of integrated cognitive and balance training for balance and falls in cerebellar ataxia: a blinded two-arm parallel group RCT.

BACKGROUND: In patients with cerebellar ataxia (CA), dual-tasking deteriorates the performance of one or both tasks. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects of 4 weeks of cognitive-coupled intensive balance training (CIBT) on dual-task cost, dynamic balance, disease severity, number of falls, quality of life, cognition and cost among patients with CA. METHODS: This RCT compared CIBT (Group 1) to single-task training (Group 2) among 32 patients with CA. The intervention included either dual-task (CIBT) or single-task training for 4 weeks followed by 6 months of unsupervised home exercises. Dual-task

Combining transcranial direct current stimulation with a motor-cognitive task: the impact on dual-task walking costs in older adults.

BACKGROUND: The performance of a secondary task while walking increases motor-cognitive interference and exacerbates fall risk in older adults. Previous studies have demonstrated that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may improve certain types of dual-task performance, and, that tDCS delivered during the performance of a task may augment the benefits of stimulation, potentially reducing motor-cognitive interference. However, it is not yet known if combining multi-target tDCS with the simultaneous performance of a task related to the tDCS targets reduces or increases dual-task walk

The interplay between cognition, functional and dual-task gait in persons with a vestibular disorder versus healthy controls.

Close links exist between vestibular function and cognition. Dual-task (DT) tests may have ecological validity to assess the impact of daily life cognitive-motor demands in people with vestibular dysfunction (PwVD), functional gait and falls risk. The present paper aimed at building predictive models for functional gait under DT conditions, while clarifying the impact of vestibular dysfunction, individual characteristics, varying task types and motor-cognitive demands. Case-controlled observational study with 39 PwVD and 62 healthy participants. The Functional Gait Assessment (FGA), with and w

Single and dual task gait training in people with Parkinson's disease: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty performing more than one task at a time (dual tasking) is a common and disabling problem experienced by people with Parkinson disease (PD). If asked to perform another task when walking, people with PD often take shorter steps or walk more slowly. Currently there is uncertainty about whether clinicians should teach people with PD to avoid dual tasking or whether they should encourage them to practice dual tasking with the hope that practice will lead to enhanced performance. This study will address this issue by comparing single to dual task gait training. METHODS AND D

Age-related cognitive task effects on gait characteristics: do different working memory components make a difference?

BACKGROUND: Though it is well recognized that gait characteristics are affected by concurrent cognitive tasks, how different working memory components contribute to dual task effects on gait is still unknown. The objective of the present study was to investigate dual-task effects on gait characteristics, specifically the application of cognitive tasks involving different working memory components. In addition, we also examined age-related differences in such dual-task effects. METHODS: Three cognitive tasks (i.e. 'Random Digit Generation', 'Brooks' Spatial Memory', and 'Counting Backward') in

Differential associations between dual-task walking abilities and usual gait patterns in healthy older adults-Results from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that facing a cognitive challenge while carrying out a motor task interferes with the motor task performance, and in general the ability of handling a dual-task declines progressively with aging. However, the reasons for this decline have not been fully elucidated. Understanding the association between usual-walking gait patterns and dual-task walking performance may provide new insights into the mechanisms that lead to gait deterioration in normal aging and its link to motor and cognitive function. RESEARCH QUESTION: Our aim was to assess usual gait paramet
