Real-World Effectiveness of Menopausal Hormone Therapy in Preventing Relapse in Women With Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Antipsychotic effectiveness in preventing relapse declines around menopausal age in women with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (SSD). It is not known whether systemic menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) can help to prevent psychosis relapse. METHODS: A within-subject study design was used to study the effectiveness of MHT in preventing relapse in a Finnish nationwide cohort of women with SSD between 40 and 62 years of age who used MHT during follow-up (1994-2017). Hazard ratios adjusted for age and psychotropic drug use were calculated for psychosis relapse as main outcome a

Several synthetic progestins disrupt the glial cell specific-brain aromatase expression in developing zebra fish.

The effects of some progestins on fish reproduction have been recently reported revealing the hazard of this class of steroidal pharmaceuticals. However, their effects at the central nervous system level have been poorly studied until now. Notwithstanding, progesterone, although still widely considered primarily a sex hormone, is an important agent affecting many central nervous system functions. Herein, we investigated the effects of a large set of synthetic ligands of the nuclear progesterone receptor on the glial-specific expression of the zebrafish brain aromatase (cyp19a1b) using zebrafis

Early universal use of oral progesterone for prevention of preterm births in singleton pregnancy (SINPRO study): protocol of a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth accounts for 75% of perinatal deaths and more than 50% of long-term neurological disabilities. For a singleton pregnancy, progesterone treatment is effective in prevention of preterm birth in women with an asymptomatic short cervix or a history of preterm birth. However, a large proportion of preterm births still is not currently preventable. The aim of this study is to determine whether early universal use of oral progesterone before 14 + 0 weeks of gestation can prevent preterm birth better than universal screening of cervical length at 18 + 0 to 23 + 6 weeks of ges

Cardiac Death Risk in Relation to the Age at Initiation or the Progestin Component of Hormone Therapies.

CONTEXT: The "window of opportunity hypothesis" refers to data indicating that conjugated equine estrogen alone or in combination with medroxyprogesterone acetate, if initiated before 60 years of age, protects the heart but endangers it if initiated later (Women's Health Initiative study). Less is known about the "window of opportunity hypothesis" with natural estradiol alone (ET) or with various progestins in combination with estradiol (EPT). OBJECTIVE: We related the death risk from coronary heart disease (CHD) in users of ET or EPT to the age at the initiation of therapy and to the progest

The efficacy and safety of Femoston combined with Baoqing granules for kidney Yin deficiency in perimenopausal women: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perimenopausal symptoms affect most women and often substantially impair their quality of life, whereas conventional estrogen therapy alone does not fully address clinical needs. Baoqing granules (BQG), derived from Zuo Gui Wan in Jingyue's Complete Works, were modified to target kidney Yin deficiency and have shown promising clinical efficacy, although robust randomized evidence remains limited. METHODS: The trial was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2300073338; http://www.chictr.org.cn). In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical tria

GuBen AnTai decoction ameliorates recurrent spontaneous abortion by suppressing excessive autophagy via EGFR/PI3K pathway modulation.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese herbal formula Guben Antai Decoction (GBAT) demonstrates efficacy in reducing pregnancy loss associated with recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its impact on the physiological functions of the placental trophoblast cells remain unclear. PURPOSE: The objectives were to assess GBAT's efficacy in both a trophoblast-cell oxidative-stress model and a pregnant mouse model of RSA and to elucidate the complex mechanisms underlying the prevention of pregnancy loss using comprehensive multi-omics analysis integrated with a network

"All-In-One" Genetic Tool Assessing Endometrial Receptivity for Personalized Screening of Female Sex Steroid Hormones.

Endometrium is the uterine lining that undergoes hundreds of cycles of proliferation, differentiation, and desquamation throughout a woman's reproductive life. Recently, much attention is paid to the appropriate endometrial functioning, as decreased endometrial receptivity is stated to be one of the concerns heavily influencing successes of embryo implantation rates and the efficacy of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. In order to acquire and maintain the desired endometrial receptivity during IVF cycles, luteal phase support by various progestagens or other hormonal combinations is gene

The influence of estro-progestin therapy on neurohormonal activity in functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.

Background: Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is a chronic endocrine disorder caused by the abnormal pulsatile secretion of neurohormones in the hypothalamus. Secretion of GnRH is regulated by kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin (KNDy) neurons. These neurons produce, among other neurohormones, neurokinin B (NKB) which regulates the coordinated stimulation or inhibition of GnRH secreting neurons. Aim of the study: Assessment and comparison of serum NKB in patients with FHA at baseline, and following 6 months of estrogen-progestagen therapy. Materials and methods: Fifty-five patients with f

Preventive vs. therapeutic effects of Shoutai Wan: Maintaining an acidic microenvironment at the maternal-fetal interface to promote angiogenesis and minimize pregnancy loss in RSA mice.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The classic TCM prescription, Shoutai Wan (STW), is extensively used in clinical settings to manage threatened miscarriage and Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). The complexity of pregnancy physiology, coupled with diverse etiologies, and the specificity of energy metabolism for normal embryo attachment and development, pose challenges to clinical diagnosis and treatment. The specific molecular mechanisms of how STW regulates these biological processes and contributes to the treatment of RSA remain to be elucidated. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to inves

A 10-year follow-up on the practice of luteal phase support using worldwide web-based surveys.

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that luteal phase support (LPS) is crucial in filling the gap between the disappearance of exogenously administered hCG for ovulation triggering and the initiation of secretion of endogenous hCG from the implanting conceptus. LPS has a pivotal role of in establishing and maintaining in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancies. Over the last decade, a plethora of studies bringing new information on many aspects of LPS have been published. Due to lack of consent between researchers and a dearth of robust evidence-based guidelines, we wanted to make the leap from
