The Caspofungin Paradoxical Effect is a Tolerant "Eagle Effect" in the Filamentous Fungal Pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.

Cell responses against antifungals other than resistance have rarely been studied in filamentous fungi, while terms such as tolerance and persistence are well-described for bacteria and increasingly examined in yeast-like organisms. Aspergillus fumigatus is a filamentous fungal pathogen that causes a disease named aspergillosis, for which caspofungin (CAS), a fungistatic drug, is used as a second-line therapy. Some A. fumigatus clinical isolates can survive and grow in CAS concentrations above the minimum effective concentration (MEC), a phenomenon known as "caspofungin paradoxical effect" (CP

A Prolonged Time to Diagnosis Due to Misdiagnoses: A Case Report of an Atypical Presentation of Eagle Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Eagle syndrome is an unusual condition in which the styloid process (SP) becomes elongated and causes different clinical symptoms due to pressure on adjacent anatomical structures. The symptoms are non-specific and include severe throat, facial, and ear pain, or headaches. They are usually exacerbated by head rotation, swallowing, yawning, or chewing, but atypical presentations exist. It is a difficult pathology to diagnose and it can take several years before a proper diagnosis is made. CASE REPORT This report describes the case of a dental student presenting with an atypical prese

Effect of Fluid Properties on Contact Angles in the Eagle Ford Shale Measured with Spontaneous Imbibition.

Models of fluid flow are used to improve the efficiency of oil and gas extraction and to estimate the storage and leakage of carbon dioxide in geologic reservoirs. Therefore, a quantitative understanding of key parameters of rock-fluid interactions, such as contact angles, wetting, and the rate of spontaneous imbibition, is necessary if these models are to predict reservoir behavior accurately. In this study, aqueous fluid imbibition rates were measured in fractures in samples of the Eagle Ford Shale using neutron imaging. Several liquids, including pure water and aqueous solutions containing

Surgical management of Eagle syndrome: A 17-year experience with open and transoral robotic styloidectomy.

Eagle Syndrome (ES) is a rare disorder that can present with symptoms ranging from globus sensation to otalgia that is attributed to an elongated styloid process and/or calcified stylohyoid ligament. No standardized treatment algorithm exists, and although various surgical approaches have been described, data on the use of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in this population is limited. To investigate the utility of TORS in the treatment of ES, a retrospective review in 19 ES patients was carried out at a single academic, tertiary medical center between 2000 and 2017. Nineteen patients underwen

Complete ossification of the stylohyoid chain as cause of Eagle's syndrome: a very rare case report.

AIM: To report on a patient with Eagle's syndrome with a complete and very large ossification of the stylohyoid complex on the right side that to our best knowledge has never been published previously. BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome is characterized by a set of symptoms that are caused by the irritation of the neurovascular and soft-tissues caused by an elongated styloid process or ossification of stylohyoid ligament. CASE DESCRIPTION: Because of the high discomfort and pain degree as well as limitations of mandibular and head mobility and also the thickness of the ossifed stylohyoid chain, th

Transoral, retromolar, para-tonsillar approach to the styloid process in 6 patients with Eagle's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the knowledge that men who have sex with men (MSM) are more likely to be infected with HIV across settings, there has been little investigation of the experiences of MSM who are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Using the framework of positive health, dignity and prevention, we explored the experiences and HIV prevention, care and treatment needs of MSM who are living with HIV in Swaziland. METHODS: We conducted 40 in-depth interviews with 20 HIV-positive MSM, 16 interviews with key informants and three focus groups with MSM community members. Qualitative analysis w

Fecal steroid monitoring for assessing gonadal and adrenal activity in the golden eagle and peregrine falcon.

We examined the efficacy of noninvasive monitoring of endocrine function via fecal steroid immunoassays in the golden eagle and peregrine falcon. High-pressure liquid chromatography analyses of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (fGCM) revealed that minor percentages of immunoreactive fGCM co-eluted with [(3)H]corticosterone in both sexes of the eagle (2.5-2.7%) and falcon (7.5-11.9%). In contrast, most fecal estrogen metabolites in eagle and falcon females co-eluted with radiolabeled estradiol-17beta ([(3)H]; 57.6, 64.6%, respectively) or estrone ([(3)H]; 26.9, 4.1%, respectively). Transoral para-tonsillar robotic approach for eagle syndrome: A technical note and exemplifying case.

Eagle Syndrome refers to an elongation of the styloid process or a calcification of the stylohyoid ligament mainly resulting in pain in the orofacial region. The treatment of Eagle syndrome includes conservative treatment or surgical removal of the styloid process. Two different surgical approaches have been described in the literature: the transoral and transcervical approaches. Both have their limitations and specific intraoperative risks. With the advent and the expanding utilization of new technologies, transoral robotic surgery has emerged as a promising minimally invasive approach for th

Adaptive treatment strategy for a vestibular schwannoma in a patient with vascular Eagle syndrome: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome, an uncommon condition, causes symptoms due to neural and/or vascular compression from an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament and can also complicate other planned surgical procedures. OBSERVATIONS: A 42-year-old female with loss of balance, dizziness, and ataxic gait underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealing a right-sided Koos grade IV vestibular schwannoma. Initially, a retrosigmoid craniotomy for tumor resection was planned. However, preoperative MRI and computed tomography (CT) showed a dilated right-sided mastoid emiss

A case of rickets in an artificially raised white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) chick at a zoo.

A two-week-old white-tailed eagle presented with an inability to stand and flex its limbs. Despite hatching naturally and owing to lack of parental attention, the bird was raised indoors by zookeepers with no access to sunlight. Palpation and radiographic examination of the bilateral tibiotarsus and femur bone revealed pronounced deformation and curvature, and bilateral decreased bone densities, respectively. The reduced calcium concentration in the blood was treated with calcium gluconate injections and calcium-supplemented feeds. Chopped mouse tails were fed directly, and whole pink-skinned

White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) as the definitive host of Sarcocystis lutrae in the Czech Republic.

The white-tailed eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, has been involved in the life cycle of several Sarcocystis species as the intermediate and definitive host. To date, it has been supposed that the eagle might play the role as the definitive host for S. Lutrae, and, herein, we tried to elucidate it based on morphometric and molecular analyses. One out of two eagles harbored oocysts (17.0-17.4 × 11.3-11.9 μm) and sporocysts (11.3-12.3 × 8.3-9.3 μm) in the intestinal mucosa, whose sequences at 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS1, and cox1 showed similar identity (97.64-100%) to published sequences of S. lutrae

Clinical characteristics and neuroimaging findings in eagle syndrome induced internal jugular vein stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome is a condition that causes pharyngeal pain, facial pain, swallowing difficulties, and symptoms of arterial impingement due to the elongated styloid process. However, few reports were about eagle syndrome with venous compression up to now. This study aimed to identify the clinical profiles of the internal jugular vein stenosis (IJVS) related eagle syndrome comprehensively. METHODS: A total of 27 patients, who were diagnosed as IJVS induced by styloid process compression were enrolled. The clinical manifestations and imaging features were analyzed. RESULTS: Styloid p

Dural Arteriovenous Fistula Formation as Eagle Jugular Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: An elongated styloid process can less frequently lead to symptomatic compression of the internal jugular vein (IJV). We present the first case of dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) in association with compressed IJV by an elongated styloid process. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 77-year-old woman presented with pulsating tinnitus. DAVF at the right hypoglossal canal was diagnosed, and she underwent transvenous embolization. The shunt flow was reduced, and the symptom disappeared after transvenous embolization. However, 2 years and 8 months later, retrograde sinus drainage from the residual s

Variants of the hyoid-larynx complex, with implications for forensic science and consequence for the diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome.

Thorough anatomic knowledge of the hyoid-larynx complex is necessary for forensic radiologists and ear-nose-throat surgeons, given the many anatomic variations that originate in embryology. In forensics the anomalies must be distinguished from fractures because the latter are indicative of violence on the neck. In this manuscript we describe the anatomical variations that can be found in the hyoid-larynx complex and explain their etiology. 284 radiological scans of excised hyoid-larynx complexes were examined with X-ray and CT. Some rare cases from literature and historical collections were ad
