[CHRONIC D2-RECEPTOR BLOCKADE AND BEHAVIOR OF LOW DEPRESSIVE RATS].

The article is devoted to investigation of influence of chronic D2-receptor blockade by haloperidol on behavior low depressive rats. It is shown that chronic D2-receptor blockade by haloperidol (2.5 mg/kg) causes pro-depressant effect on behavior of low depressive rats and leads to the formation of the depressed state. In control and experimental groups, identified circaseptan and circasemiseptan rhythms in the dynamics of the index of depression, characterized by a phase shift relative to each other.

Manipulation of fluid objects with acoustic radiation pressure.

Conditions are summarized for manipulating and stabilizing fluid objects based on the acoustic radiation pressure of standing waves. Examples include (but are not limited to) liquid drops, gas bubbles in liquids, and cylindrical liquid bridges. The emphasis is on situations where the characteristic wavelength of the acoustic field is large in comparison to the relevant dimension of the fluid object. Tables are presented for ease of comparing the signs of qualitatively different radiation force parameters for a variety of fluid objects.

Bennu and Ryugu constituents from samples IR analyses and potential source of terrestrial planets' ingredients.

Samples collected on carbonaceous asteroids and preserved from terrestrial alteration are key witnesses of the early evolution of the Solar System. Here we present the results of the characterization, by the near-IR hyperspectral microscope MicrOmega within the ISAS/JAXA curation center, of the samples returned from the Bennu asteroid by the OSIRIS-REx mission. We compare these samples to those from Ryugu, analyzed with the same instrument and at the same facility, using gram-scale quantities of material. We demonstrate that Bennu and Ryugu samples exhibit similar near-IR diagnostic spectral p

Production of nitrates and perchlorates by laser ablation of sodium chloride in simulated Martian atmospheres. Implications for their formation by electric discharges in dust devils.

Nitrates and perchlorates are present both on Earth and Mars. In the Martian environment perchlorates dominate over nitrates whereas on Earth is contrariwise. This implies that the mechanisms responsible for their formation are different for both planets. The chemical elements required for their formation are nitrogen and chlorine, which are present in the atmosphere and surface, respectively. Dust in the Martian atmosphere causes atmospheric perturbations that lead to the development of dust-devils and sandstorms. Dust devils contain both chemical elements simultaneously, and normally generat

A diffusion mechanism for core-mantle interaction.

Understanding the geochemical behaviour of the siderophile elements--those tending to form alloys with iron in natural environments--is important in the search for a deep-mantle chemical 'fingerprint' in upper mantle rocks, and also in the evaluation of models of large-scale differentiation of the Earth and terrestrial planets. These elements are highly concentrated in the core relative to the silicate mantle, but their concentrations in upper mantle rocks are higher than predicted by most core-formation models. It has been suggested that mixing of outer-core material back into the mantle foll

Data sonification offers a novel approach for communicating Earth's tipping points.

Rapid social-ecological change has placed Planet Earth on a trajectory characterized by regime shifts that can inflict substantial costs on economies and human well-being. Current attempts to communicate these changes and their consequences have often failed to resonate; hence, more effective approaches are needed to increase public awareness of these potentially catastrophic events. This paper explores data sonification, a tool that transforms data into sound, as a means of conveying ecological regime shifts through music. In this study, prior assessments of a 7000-year paleo-sequence of diat

Vested Interest Theory as a Framework for Understanding Anthropogenic Climate Change Risk Perceptions.

Climate change due to anthropogenic activities is contributing to the systematic warming of Earth. A warming planet represents an existential threat to humanity, contributing to the increased frequency and magnitude of multiple natural hazards. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) notes that time is running out to create meaningful change to avert climate-related consequences. This research posits Vested Interest Theory (VIT) as a potentially useful framework for assessing attitudes and risk perceptions associated with anthropogenic climate change (ACC). Vested Interest Th

Development of Martian saline seep models and their implications for planetary protection.

While life on Mars has not been found, Earth-based microorganisms may contaminate the Red Planet during rover expeditions and human exploration. Due to the survival advantages conferred by the biofilm morphology to microorganisms, such as resistance to UV and osmotic stress, biofilms are particularly concerning from a planetary protection perspective. Modeling and data from the NASA Phoenix mission indicate that temporary liquid water might exist on Mars in the form of high salinity brines. These brines could provide colonization opportunities for terrestrial microorganisms brought by spacecra

Diversity and taxonomy of giant algal viruses: chloroviruses lead the way.

Viruses are the most diverse and abundant biological entities on Earth. Their impact on life is undeniable, and viruses of microorganisms, in particular, exert a profound impact on the planet by shaping biogeochemical cycles and driving the evolution of living organisms. Among them, the giant viruses of the family Phycodnaviridae are major players in aquatic environments, infecting many groups of algae from inland and marine ecosystems. The discovery of chloroviruses over 40 years ago started a new era in virology, paving the way for fundamental discoveries into the diversity and evolution of

Extracellular superoxide production is a widespread photoacclimation strategy in phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton help control the habitability of Earth by serving as the base of marine food webs, producing approximately half of the planet's oxygen, and sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As global changes accelerate through the Anthropocene, phytoplankton communities face multiple stressors, such as shifting patterns in ocean circulation, and associated changes in light exposure. The health of the oceans depends on phytoplankton responses to these stressors; however, the physiological processes involved in light stress are not fully understood. Here, we surveyed 16 representati

Bio-mediated CN cycling in serpentinites and the origin of life.

Hydrogen-rich, high pH conditions associated with serpentinisation are fundamental to some theories of the origin of life on Earth and other planets. In these theories, the first life formed in hydrothermal vents from organic compounds produced by metal-catalysed reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrate by hydrogen. Competing theories suggest that life could not have arisen without hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and that HCN was provided by vaporisation of large impactors. Here, we show that carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species are associated with chalcopyrite and native copper in serpentinised perido

Cosmic Silicate Surfaces Catalizing Prebiotic Reactions: Atomistic Modeling on the Polymerization of HCN.

Hydrogen cyanide, HCN, is a fundamental building block in astro- and cosmochemical environments, known for its ability to form prebiotically relevant molecules such as nucleobases. Although its polymerization is inhibited under the cold, dilute conditions of the interstellar medium, the higher temperatures of more evolved rocky bodies, combined with the presence of mineral surfaces, can catalyze the reaction. In this study, we use atomistic simulations grounded on the density functional theory (DFT) to elucidate the complete tetramerization pathway of HCN to diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN) and diam

Measuring Biodiversity and Extinction-Present and Past.

How biodiversity is changing in our time represents a major concern for all organismal biologists. Anthropogenic changes to our planet are decreasing species diversity through the negative effects of pollution, habitat destruction, direct extirpation of species, and climate change. But major biotic changes-including those that have both increased and decreased species diversity-have happened before in Earth's history. Biodiversity dynamics in past eras provide important context to understand ecological responses to current environmental change. The work of assessing biodiversity is woven into

Air Pollution and Climate Change Effects on Allergies in the Anthropocene: Abundance, Interaction, and Modification of Allergens and Adjuvants.

Air pollution and climate change are potential drivers for the increasing burden of allergic diseases. The molecular mechanisms by which air pollutants and climate parameters may influence allergic diseases, however, are complex and elusive. This article provides an overview of physical, chemical and biological interactions between air pollution, climate change, allergens, adjuvants and the immune system, addressing how these interactions may promote the development of allergies. We reviewed and synthesized key findings from atmospheric, climate, and biomedical research. The current state of k

Reduction of nitrogen compounds in oceanic basement and its implications for HCN formation and abiotic organic synthesis.

Hydrogen cyanide is an excellent organic reagent and is central to most of the reaction pathways leading to abiotic formation of simple organic compounds containing nitrogen, such as amino acids, purines and pyrimidines. Reduced carbon and nitrogen precursor compounds for the synthesis of HCN may be formed under off-axis hydrothermal conditions in oceanic lithosphere in the presence of native Fe and Ni and are adsorbed on authigenic layer silicates and zeolites. The native metals as well as the molecular hydrogen reducing CO2 to CO/CH4 and NO3-/NO2- to NH3/NH4+ are a result of serpentinization

Endocrine disruptors: a new scientific role for clinical pharmacologists? Impact on human health, wildlife, and the environment.

It is important for the clinical pharmacologist to understand the potential human health implications of exposure to environmental chemicals that may act as hormonally active agents. It is necessary to have an understanding of how pharmaceutical and personal care products and other chemicals affect the ecosystem of planet Earth and to understand how they may negatively contribute to human disease. Clinical pharmacologists must understand the various definitions of endocrine disruptors and be able to "decipher" these terms for their patients. Understanding the need for the EPA endocrine disrupt

Cave microorganisms: hidden players in global greenhouse gas cycling and climate regulation.

Caves are unique among ecosystem types because of their physical structures and biological functions. Embedded in rocks, the geological setting defines the boundaries of caves and dictates how energy and matter move through them. General features of caves, compared to surface ecosystems, include absence of light, relatively stable temperature and humidity, and oligotrophic conditions. Despite these conditions, caves are highly diverse ecosystems whose environmental properties are shaped by geological, hydrological, and climatic factors. Cave microbiomes metabolize atmospheric trace gases, such

Measurement of Photochemical Haze Refractive Indices and Hygroscopicity: Influence of CO2 in CH4/H2S/N2 Mixtures.

Atmospheric organic hazes are widespread across various planetary bodies and have significant effects on both the surface and atmosphere. In this study, we investigate the optical and hygroscopic properties of organic hazes formed through photochemical processes. The hazes were generated from the irradiation of mixtures that contained molecular nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and varying amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) to mimic early Earth-like conditions. In the absence of CO2, the photochemical haze absorbed radiation at 405 nm. In contrast, the incorporation of CO2 int

The Impact of Climate Change and Extreme Weather Conditions on Cardiovascular Health and Acute Cardiovascular Diseases.

Climate change is widely recognized as one of the most significant challenges facing our planet and human civilization. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to a warming of the Earth's climate. The relationship between climate change and cardiovascular (CV) health, mediated by air pollution and increased ambient temperatures, is complex and very heterogeneous. The main mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CV disease at extreme temperatures involve several regulatory pathways, inc
