Exploring alexithymia, depression, and binge eating in self-reported eating disorders in women.

TOPIC: Binge eating is often a way of life for many women even if the diagnostic criteria for the tentative DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of binge eating disorder is not met. METHODS: Binge eating was conceptualized as a problem in affect regulation. Affective indices of alexithymia and depression were measure with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), the Alexithymia-Provoked Response Questionnaire (APQR), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. This study was an exploratory study of 65 subjects, 35 of whom self-reported as eating disordered and 30 as non-eating disordered. FINDINGS: Of

Eating behavior and eating disorders: the interface between clinical research and clinical practice.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be a highly effective form of treatment for patients with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. Issues of satiety disturbances, food restriction, and food choice are central to this form of therapy; however, ingestive behavior research that directly addresses these issues in eating disorder patients has often been overlooked by clinicians. These areas of research are reviewed and the implications of the findings for more effective CBT therapy with anorexics and bulimics are discussed.

Eating Disorders in the Workplace.

Background/Objectives: Although eating disorders (EDs) affect a large portion of the population and have a significant impact on health and productivity, they are understudied in the workplace. We assessed the frequency of EDs and studied the relationship between EDs and occupational and individual factors. Methods: All workers undergoing health surveillance were invited to fill in the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, short form (EDE-QS) and, before their routine medical examination that included metabolic tests, measure their level of health literacy, stress, quality of sleep, anxie

The Neurobiology of Eating Disorders.

Eating disorders are severe psychiatric illnesses with a typical age of onset in adolescence. Brain research in youth and young adults may help us identify specific neurobiology that contributes to onset and maintenance of those disorders. This article provides a state-of-the-art review of our current understanding of the neurobiology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This includes brain structure and function studies to understand food restriction, binge-eating or purging behaviors, cognitive and emotional factors, as well as interoception. Binge-eating disorder and avoidant restrictiv

Regulation of the Motivation to Eat.

Although food intake is necessary to provide energy for all bodily activities, considering food intake as a motivated behavior is complex. Rather than being a simple unconditioned reflex to energy need, eating is mediated by diverse factors. These include homeostatic signals such as those related to body fat stores, to food available and being eaten, and to circulating energy-rich compounds like glucose and fatty acids. Eating is also greatly influenced by non-homeostatic signals that convey information related to learning and experience, hedonics, stress, the social situation, opportunity, an

The genetics of eating disorders.

Over the past decade, considerable advances have been made in understanding genetic influences on eating pathology. Eating disorders aggregate in families, and twin studies reveal that additive genetic factors account for approximately 40% to 60% of liability to anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). Molecular genetics studies have been undertaken to identify alterations in deoxyribonucleic acid sequence and/or gene expression that may be involved in the pathogenesis of disordered eating behaviors, symptoms, and related disorders and to uncover potential

[Eating disorders in the workplace].

The prevalence of eating disorders (ED) has increased and these are intractable disorders that require prolonged treatment. The workplace is an important life scene for the patients, but there are few reports available about the current status and correspondence to ED in workplace. Based on a survey of 1248 enterprises, we discuss the cognition of each form of ED. In addition, the background, eating behaviors, and job stress of 2004 workers were also surveyed. Based on these responses, workers who were supposed to demonstrate anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or night eating syndrom

The genetics of eating disorders.

The eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa traditionally have been viewed as sociocultural in origin. However, recent behavioral genetic findings suggest substantial genetic influence on these disorders. Molecular genetic research of these disorders is in its infancy, but initial results are promising. This article reviews findings from family, twin, and molecular genetic studies that support substantial genetic influences on disordered eating and highlights additional areas for future research.

Epidemiology of the eating disorders.

Recent studies on the epidemiology of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and eating disorders in special populations and in other cultures are reviewed. In addition, studies on the epidemiology of dieting behavior and longitudinal studies of the outcome of dieting behavior are reviewed. It is concluded that anorexia and bulimia nervosa are uncommon disorders but probably have increased in incidence in recent years. However, they are one of the most common psychiatric disorders to affect young women in the west. Dieting behavior is a major risk factor in the pathogenesis

The treatment of eating disorders.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are common disorders among adolescent and young adult females, estimated to occur in up to 1% to 3% of these populations. A variety of medical and psychological approaches have been used in their treatment, including hospitalization; nutritional rehabilitation; medications; and psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, family, and group psychotherapies. The author discusses controlled and uncontrolled studies of the different therapeutic approaches that have been used in these disorders and reviews what is known about their prognosis. Financial difficulty, disordered eating behaviors, and intuitive eating behaviors during pregnancy: A preliminary investigation.

Financial difficulty, a social driver of health, is associated with adverse maternal outcomes; however, its relation to perinatal eating behaviors is not well understood. The present study examined associations between financial difficulty and binge eating, purging, dietary restriction, and intuitive eating during pregnancy. Data were drawn from a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional, online study conducted between December 2022 and July 2023. Participants were a U.S. community sample of pregnant adults (N = 176; Mage = 29.24; 77.8% White). Approximately 35% of participants endorsed current

Bidirectional temporal relationships between emotional state and eating across eating disorders: a network approach.

OBJECTIVE: Several models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest that emotions and eating influence each other in a vicious cycle, producing part of the observed symptoms. However, no research tested whether such cycles exist across EDs. We therefore explored networks of prospective relationships between negative and positive emotions and eating-related behaviors (hunger, food craving, calorie intake, and binges) across EDs and healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: These variables were assessed six times a day for eight days in women with restrictive (AN-R, N = 29) and binge-purge (AN-BP, N = 26) Anorex

Family functioning and eating psychopathology in developmental restrictive eating disorders after Covid-19 lockdown.

PURPOSE: While the impact of Covid-19 lockdowns on family dynamics and eating behaviors has been widely studied, there is limited and conflicting evidence regarding families of children and adolescents with restrictive eating disorders (EDs). This study examines differences in eating psychopathology and perceptions of family functioning in pediatric patients with anorexia nervosa (AN; restrictive and atypical) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) before and after the pandemic. METHODS: A total of 640 children and adolescents with restrictive EDs and their parents, assessed fr

Eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image research in New Zealand: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The prevention and treatment of eating disorders relies on an extensive body of research that includes various foci and methodologies. This scoping review identified relevant studies of eating disorders, body image, and disordered eating with New Zealand samples; charted the methodologies, sample characteristics, and findings reported; and identified several gaps that should be addressed by further research. METHODS: Using scoping review methodology, two databases were searched for studies examining eating disorders, disordered eating, or body image with New Zealand samples. Snowb

Eating Disorders: An Analysis of Self-Induced Vomiting, Binge Eating, and Oral Hygiene Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Self-induced vomiting (SIV) is often present in patients with eating disorders (ED) and potentially damaging for oral health. Related behaviors, such as binge eating and oral hygiene habits, may equally increase the risk for dental damage. This study aimed to investigate behaviors and habits in patients with ED and SIV in relation to oral health. METHODS: All patients enlisting for treatment in an ED clinic for 1 year were offered to take part in the study. Fifty-four of 65 patients were accepted to participate, and a questionnaire included questions on dietary and oral hygiene ha

Virtual Reality App for Treating Eating Behavior in Eating Disorders: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is one of the more severe eating disorders, which is characterized by reduced food intake, leading to emaciation and psychological maladjustment. Treatment outcomes are often discouraging, with most interventions displaying a recovery rate below 50%, a dropout rate from 20% to 50%, and a high risk of relapse. Patients with anorexia nervosa often display anxiety and aversive behaviors toward food. Virtual reality has been successful in treating vertigo, anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress syndrome, and could potentially be used as an aid in treating eating di

Do DSM-5 eating disorder criteria overpathologize normative eating patterns among individuals with obesity?

BACKGROUND: DSM-5 revisions have been criticized in the popular press for overpathologizing normative eating patterns-particularly among individuals with obesity. To evaluate the evidence for this and other DSM-5 critiques, we compared the point prevalence and interrater reliability of DSM-IV versus DSM-5 eating disorders (EDs) among adults seeking weight-loss treatment. METHOD: Clinicians (n = 2) assigned DSM-IV and DSM-5 ED diagnoses to 100 participants via routine clinical interview. Research assessors (n = 3) independently conferred ED diagnoses via Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-I

Does maternal history of eating disorders predict mothers' feeding practices and preschoolers' emotional eating?

We aimed to examine whether a maternal history of eating disorders predicted mothers' feeding practices and preschoolers' emotional eating patterns. Data were available from 4851 mothers and their children, who participated in a Dutch population-based cohort study (the Generation R Study). Maternal history of lifetime eating disorders was assessed during pregnancy using a self-report questionnaire. Mothers filled out the Child Feeding Questionnaire and the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire when children were four years old. Linear regression analyses were performed, adjusting for potential
