Reported high drug use at music festivals coupled with factors such as public urination can lead to the direct release of illicit drugs into the environment. Glastonbury Festival 2019 had 203,000 attendees, its site is intercepted by the Whitelake River providing a direct route for illicit drug pollution into the local environment. We tested for popular illicit drugs such as cocaine and MDMA in the river upstream and downstream of the festival site as well as in the neighbouring Redlake River. Both rivers were sampled the weeks before, during and after the festival. Cocaine, benzoylecgonine an

OBJECTIVE: Gut microbiome alterations in Parkinson disease (PD) have been reported repeatedly, but their functional relevance remains unclear. Fecal metabolomics, which provide a functional readout of microbial activity, have scarcely been investigated. We investigated fecal microbiome and metabolome alterations in PD, and their clinical relevance.
METHODS: Two hundred subjects (104 patients, 96 controls) underwent extensive clinical phenotyping. Stool samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Fecal metabolomics were performed using two platforms, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)

Experimental and clinical data made us consider some types of perceptive hearing loss secondary to an alteration of the secretory structures of the cochlea including stria vascularis, spiral ligament and supporting cells. These structures are responsible for the secretion of endolymph, a fluid characterized by a high potassium concentration (150-180 mM), a low sodium concentration (<1 mM) and a positive potential (80-100 mV). This intracellular-like fluid fills the endolymphatic compartment and is essential in the transduction process which takes place in the organ of Corti. Experimental studi

Mangrove forests capture and store exceptionally large amounts of carbon and are increasingly recognised as an important ecosystem for carbon sequestration. Yet land-use change in the tropics threatens this ecosystem and its critical 'blue carbon' (carbon stored in marine and coastal habitats) stores. The expansion of shrimp aquaculture is among the major causes of mangrove loss globally. Here, we assess the impact of mangrove to shrimp pond conversion on ecosystem carbon stocks, and carbon losses and gains over time after ponds are abandoned. Our assessment is based on an intensive field inve

Bushmeat, the meat and organs derived from wildlife species, is a common source of animal protein in the diets of those living in sub-Saharan Africa and is frequently associated with zoonotic spillover of dangerous pathogens. Given the frequent consumption of bushmeat in this region and the lack of knowledge about the microbial communities associated with this meat, the microbiome of 56 fresh and processed bushmeat samples ascertained from three districts in the Western Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania was characterized using 16S rRNA metagenomic sequencing. The results show that the most abund

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan of worldwide distribution. The present study provides information on risk factors affecting T. gondii infection in domestic and free-ranging wild ungulates sharing habitats in Mediterranean ecosystems in Spain. Serum samples from 482 extensively reared domestic ruminants and 2351 wild ungulates were tested for T. gondii antibodies using the modified agglutination test (MAT, cut-off 1:25). Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence was 41.2% of 194 sheep, 18.6% of 199 cattle and 5.6% of 89 goats. The main risk factors associated with infection in livestock were t

This article explores the implications for human health of local interactions between disease, ecosystems and livelihoods. Five interdisciplinary case studies addressed zoonotic diseases in African settings: Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Kenya, human African trypanosomiasis in Zambia and Zimbabwe, Lassa fever in Sierra Leone and henipaviruses in Ghana. Each explored how ecological changes and human-ecosystem interactions affect pathogen dynamics and hence the likelihood of zoonotic spillover and transmission, and how socially differentiated peoples' interactions with ecosystems and animals affect

Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) are small cetaceans that inhabit coastal regions down to a 50 m depth. As a coastally distributed species, they are exposed to a variety of human-induced risks that include passive fishing nets, persistent environmental pollution, and emerging diseases. As a top predatorS. guianensis occupies an important ecological niche in marine ecosystems. However, this niche also exposes this dolphin to extensive biomagnification of marine contaminants that may accumulate and be stored throughout their life of about 30 years. In this paper, we have compiled available da

Large inflows of nitrogen (N)-rich freshwater to estuaries can lead to expressions of eutrophication including harmful algal blooms of cyanobacteria (CyanoHABs). Lake Pontchartrain is a large, oligohaline estuary that occasionally receives episodic diversions of N-rich Mississippi River water via the Bonnet Carré Spillway to alleviate flood threats to New Orleans, LA. The extreme flood stage of the Lower Mississippi River in May 2011 prompted the tenth opening of the spillway since 1937. The 2011 opening occurred later in the season than the previous two lower discharge events (1997 and 2008)

While it is well established that ecosystems display strong responses to elevated nitrogen deposition, the importance of the ratio between the dominant forms of deposited nitrogen (NH(x) and NO(y)) in determining ecosystem response is poorly understood. As large changes in the ratio of oxidised and reduced nitrogen inputs are occurring, this oversight requires attention. One reason for this knowledge gap is that plants experience a different NH(x):NO(y) ratio in soil to that seen in atmospheric deposits because atmospheric inputs are modified by soil transformations, mediated by soil pH. Mercury (Hg) contamination in tundra region has raised substantial concerns, especially since the first report of atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) in the Polar Regions. During the past decade, steady progress has been made in the research of Hg cycling in the Polar Regions. This has generated a unique opportunity to survey the whole Arctic in respect to Hg issue and to find out new discoveries. However, there are still considerable knowledge gaps and debates on the fate of Hg in the Arctic and Antarctica, especially regarding the importance and significance of AMDEs vs. net Hg load

The author wants to direct attention to the persistent otherisation of queer/trans people in mental health ecosystems that breeds conversion culture ‒ a system of values that looks at gender/sexual diversity as a less preferred outcome. While outright and tell-tale forms of conversion efforts continue to be flagged, outlawed and held accountable, a wider paradox is exposed: Do majority cis-het psychotherapists go along with anti-conversion practices because they truly believe them to be unethical and violative? After a critical review of literature on micro-aggressions, the author argues that

With the widespread use of plastics for both personal and industrial applications, significant amounts of micro- and nano-sized plastic particles (MNPs) are entering our air and waterways. This impacts ecosystems, triggers the formation of biofilms and facilitates the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Moreover, direct human exposure to MNPS is inevitable and occurs primarily through ingestion and inhalation. Once internalized, MNPs cause oxidative stress and inflammation. Within tissue matrices, proteins and other macromolecules adhere to MNPs, forming a coating referred to as a coro

Expediting the construction of the new energy systems is crucial to achieving an energy transition, decreasing carbon dioxide emissions, and alleviating global warming. Utilizing Chinese province panel data from 2000 to 2022, we examined the causal effect of diversity in financial ecosystems on the new energy systems and utilized instrumental variable estimates to mitigate endogeneity. We constructed a new energy systems indicator framework, employed the entropy approach to assign weights to each indicator objectively, and quantitatively assessed the level and attributes of the new energy syst

Brain metastases (BrM) affect up to 30% of patients with solid tumors, yet durable intracranial control remains rare, and the biological drivers of this poor prognosis are incompletely understood. Patient-derived resources, such as clinical cohorts, biobanks, functional ex vivo models, and multi-omic platforms, are central to closing this gap, but their generation and integration face substantial logistical and technical hurdles. Drawing on the RISEbrain consortium's experience, this Perspective examines BrM-focused cohorts and biobanks, highlighting the underused potential of rapid autopsy pr

Mercury (Hg), a global pollutant of widespread concern, poses significant threats to environmental and ecological health. Upland ecosystems are critical in the global Hg cycle, serving as major long-term sinks for atmospheric Hg, largely through vegetation mediated dry deposition. Despite this importance, substantial knowledge gaps remain on the global distribution patterns of Hg, particularly its more neurotoxic organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), in upland soils and the mechanisms governing its formation and fate. This review discusses current understanding of the global spatial pattern of H

Beech leaf disease (BLD) has emerged as a significant threat to beech forests in North America, causing the widespread decline of American beech while posing a potential threat to other beech species worldwide. BLD has drawn considerable attention due to its rapid spread and the visible decline it causes in beech trees. Since its first detection, the disease has rapidly expanded its geographic range, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive understanding of its etiology and epidemiology. This disease is characterized by interveinal dark banding of the leaf, bud abortion, and progressiv

Predators influence ecosystem functioning through consumptive and non-consumptive effects. Recent studies suggest that predators can also be an essential source of limiting nutrients in ecosystems such as coral reefs, potentially influencing prey ecology through nutrient input via their excreta. With rising commercial fishery, mesopredatory fishes are being selectively harvested from reefs. Yet, there is incomplete knowledge of the consequences of this extraction on essential ecosystem processes. Using field experiments and observations, we examined how mesopredatory fishes influence herbivory

The emergence of optical plankton sampling techniques has revealed that gelatinous zooplankton predators are considerably more numerous than previously observed.1,2 This recognition of the widespread presence of gelatinous zooplankton challenges our understanding of oceanic food-web dynamics because gelatinous zooplankton have traditionally been viewed as only minor players in oceanic biogeochemical cycles, which are critical in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide.3,4,5,6,7,8 Ctenophores (commonly called comb jellies) can be numerically dominant predators in these gelatinous communities but

Background: Mangrove ecosystems are critical coastal environments providing ecological services and acting as buffers between terrestrial and marine systems. Rising antibiotic use in aquaculture and coastal agriculture has led to the dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in these habitats. Aim: This narrative review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the prevalence, diversity, and environmental drivers of ARGs in mangrove ecosystems, highlighting their role as reservoirs and the potential for horizontal gene transfer. Methods: Studies
