Silver nanoparticles containing stearic acid isolated from Catharanthus roseus: Ovicidal and oviposition-deterrent activities on Earias vittella and ecotoxicological studies.

In the recent past, many agrochemicals have been used to control pests, but many of these fail due to the development of resistance. Many researchers, therefore, concentrate on developing new pesticide formulations from natural resources (plants/microorganism). In the present study, different extracts from Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle) was evaluated for their ovicidal and oviposition deterrent activities against Earias vittella (spiny bollworm). Among the tested extracts DCM (Dichloromethane) extract showed highest ovicidal activity (70.47%) and oviposition deterrent activity (75

Ecotoxicological assessment of soils polluted with legacy waste in Kerala using the earthworm Perionyx excavatus and terrestrial plants for effective management of legacy waste dumpsites.

The Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) dumpsite in Brahmapuram, Kerala, India, experienced a massive fire incident that burned continuously for 12 days, releasing hazardous smoke and toxic emissions into the nearby areas. The ecological impact, particularly on the terrestrial toxicity of the legacy site resulting from the fire incident, was not thoroughly investigated. The study focuses on the physicochemical properties of MSW soil collected after the fire incident and its effects on Perionyx excavatus and plants using Ecotoxicological tests. The results showed the presence of microplastics such as l

Cookware abrasion-derived particulates from non-stick cookware induce sublethal ecotoxicological disturbances in Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles and Allium cepa roots.

Although nonstick cookware is widely used in everyday life, the mechanical wear of its coatings has been proposed as a potential source of particulate release to aquatic environments, but it remains poorly investigated. In this study, we evaluated the composition, heterogeneity, and ecotoxicological effects of cookware abrasion-derived particulates (CADPs) generated under a controlled dry-abrasion protocol using nonstick cookware and a stainless steel scourer, using Physalaemus cuvieri and Allium cepa as complementary model systems. CADPs were characterized by optical microscopy, UV epifluores

Long-term exposure of zebrafish juveniles to carbon nanofibers at predicted environmentally relevant concentrations: Outspreading warns about ecotoxicological risks to freshwater fish.

Although carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) toxicity has already been demonstrated in some animal models, little is known about the impact of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on aquatic vertebrates. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible effects of long-term exposure of zebrafish (Danio rerio) juveniles (90 days) to CNFs in predicted environmentally relevant concentrations (10 ng/L and 10 μg/L). Our data revealed that exposure to CNFs did not affect the growth and development of the animals, in addition to not having induced locomotor alterations or anxiety-like behavior. On the other hand, we observe

New brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in water sediments: A review of contamination characteristics, exposure pathways, ecotoxicological effects and health risks.

As an alternative to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) has become one of the most important new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs). However, little is known about whether this emerging contaminant may has an environmental fate similar to PBDEs. Sediments are the main sink for DBDPE in the aqueous phase. Worldwide concentration data, since it was first found in sediments to date, have been collated, and the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) DBDPE concentrations in sediments have increased rapidly, often with a higher risk of contamination in sour

Characterisation of bioactive compounds from leaves of Smilax fluminensis Steud. by gc-MS and LC-DAD-MS, and analysis of its antioxidant and ecotoxicological activities.

Smilax fluminensis Steud. is distributed in Central and South America, commonly named as 'salsaparilha' or 'japicanga'. In the present work, the chemical composition was determined, antioxidant and cytotoxic effects were evaluated for the ethanol extract (EE) and fractions from leaves. Fatty acid esters and phytol were characterised in the hexane (HEX) fraction. O-glycosylated flavonols and flavones, caffeic acid derivatives, and steroidal saponins were annotated for EE, and dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (AC), and hydroethanol (HE) fractions. The samples contain flavonoids and phenolic

Entomotherapeutic Role of Periplaneta americana Extract in Alleviating Aluminum Oxide Nanoparticles-Induced Testicular Oxidative Impairment in Migratory Locusts (Locusta migratoria) as an Ecotoxicological Model.

In this study, we shed light for the first time on the usage of migratory locusts (Locusta migratoria) as an insect model to investigate the nanotoxicological influence of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles at low doses on testes, and evaluate the capacity of a whole-body extract of American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) (PAE) to attenuate Al2O3 NPs-induced toxicity. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalyzer (EDX) analysis verified the bioaccumulation of Al in testicular tissues due to its liberation from Al2O3 NPs, implying their penetration into the blood-testis barrier. Remarkably, toxi

Development of a site-specific ecological risk assessment for contaminated sites: part I. A multi-criteria based system for the selection of ecotoxicological tests and ecological observations.

A two modules Decision Support System (DSS-ERAMANIA) was developed in order to support the site-specific Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) for contaminated sites. Within the first module, the TRIAD and the Weight of Evidence approaches were used to develop a site-specific Ecological Risk Assessment framework including three tires of investigation. Selected ecological observations and ecotoxicological tests were compared according to Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods and expert judgment, and the obtained ranking was used to identify a suitable set of tests, at each investigation ti

Ecotoxicological effect of invasive Solidago canadensis L. and hybrid Solidago x niederederi Khek derived extracts toward selected aquatic, semi-aquatic and soil invertebrates.

Allelopathy is associated with biodiversity loss and assemblage changes in Solidago invaded plots. Although plant-allelopathic effects are well documented, little is known about the toxicity of goldenrod allelochemicals to invertebrates, despite its high biomass production and release of bioactive compounds via volatilization, root exudation or during decomposition, whereas the lack of information is especially evident for the new hybrid S. × niederederi. We conducted a laboratory experiment to assess the effect of water extracts and essential oils derived from the invasive Solidago canadensis

Mechanistic insights into phenanthrene-triggered oxidative stress-associated neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances toward the brandling worm (Eisenia fetida) brain: The need for an ecotoxicological evaluation.

In this study, earthworm (Eisenia fetida) brain was chosen as targeted receptors to probe the mechanisms of oxidative stress-related neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances triggered by PHE. Results showed that PHE stress can initiate significant amounts of ROS, thus triggering oxidative stress in E. fetida brain. These effects were accompanied by a significant increase of damage to macromolecules DNA and lipids, resulting in severe oxidative effects. PHE exposure can induce AChE inhibition by ROS-induced injury and the accumulation of excess ACh at the nicotinic post-synaptic

Ecotoxicological evaluation of four UV filters using marine organisms from different trophic levels Isochrysis galbana, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Paracentrotus lividus, and Siriella armata.

Due to the concern about the negative effects of exposure to sunlight, combinations of UV filters like 4-Methylbenzylidene-camphor (4-MBC), Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), Benzophenone-4 (BP-4) and 2-Ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC) are being introduced in all kind of cosmetic formulas. These chemicals are acquiring a concerning status due to their increasingly common use and the potential risk for the environment. The aim of this study is to assess the behaviour of these compounds in seawater, the toxicity to marine organisms from three trophic levels including autotrophs (Isochrysis galbana), her

Seasonal Multivariate and Spatial Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Associated Ecotoxicological and Human Health Risks in Urban Park Soils: A Case Study From Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Urban parks in rapidly developing cities face increasing heavy metal contamination, yet seasonal dynamics remain poorly understood. This study evaluated seasonal variations in heavy metal contamination and associated human health risks in two major parks in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We analyzed 48 surface soil samples (24 locations × 2 seasons) for eight metals using ICP-OES. Pollution levels were evaluated using indices (EF, Igeo, CF, PER, mHQ, TU, and TRI) and GIS-geostatistics. Sources were apportioned via multivariate analysis and positive matrix factorization (PMF), and health risks to c

Unraveling Contaminant Effects on Biodiversity across Spatial, Temporal, and Biological Scales: The Macroecotoxicology Perspective.

With the spread of contaminants across the globe, ecosystems are increasingly exposed to pollutants at varying levels of biological organization. The effects of a wide range of contaminants on individuals have been extensively studied within the discipline of ecotoxicology, but understanding the generality of species' responses across taxa and ecosystems remains a major challenge. This is because such responses are shaped by ecophysiological, geographic, and evolutionary factors, dimensions that ecotoxicology has not been able to fully capture on its own. While these dimensions are frequently

The Use of Geographic Information Systems for Spatial Ecological Risk Assessments: An Example from the Athabasca Oil Sands Area in Canada.

There is an acknowledged need in ecotoxicology for methods that integrate spatial analyses in risk assessment. This has resulted in the emergence of landscape ecotoxicology, a subdiscipline of ecotoxicology. However, landscape ecotoxicology has yet to become common practice in risk assessment due to the underdevelopment of techniques and a lack of standardized methods. In the present study, we demonstrate how geographic information systems (GISs) can serve as a standardized platform to integrate data, assess spatial patterns of ecotoxicological data for multiple species, and assess relationshi

From a validated targeted method to a retrospective UHPLC-HRMS non-targeted analysis unveiling COVID-19-related contaminants in clams. Have we bias in marine model organisms for ecotoxicological studies?

This study explores a retrospective non-targeted analysis (NTA), based on Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS), to assess hidden chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) in marine model organisms. Conventional ecotoxicological studies do not include evaluating the natural habitats of the collected organisms, missing the possibility of highlighting unexpected pollutants, and thus compromising the correctness and reliability of the experimental results. In this paper we reprocessed samples previously collected from the Venice Lagoon f

Zebrafish as a model organism in One Health Toxicology: Impact of solvents and exposure routes on the toxicity of platinum anticancer drugs.

Zebrafish are widely used not only as a model in ecotoxicology but also to study the potential impact of chemicals on human health. Typically, zebrafish are exposed to chemicals dissolved in egg water or other defined media, which is the standard routine for ecotoxicology testing. This straightforward exposure method is usually also employed to monitor adverse effects in zebrafish to predict potential hazards and modes of action in humans. Here, we compared different exposure media and studied the impact of salinity and solvents relevant to ecotoxicity testing. For comparison, toxicants also w

Climate warming drives nonlinear shifts in mercury bioavailability and ecological risk in coastal sediments.

Mercury (Hg) contamination poses urgent ecotoxicological concerns for coastal ecosystems, yet the temperature-dependent bioavailability and ecotoxicological risks of different Hg species remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated how warming influences methylmercury (MeHg) and divalent inorganic mercury (InHg, Hg2+) in coastal sediments using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) to capture labile, bioavailable Hg. DGT provides a dynamic, environmentally relevant measure of Hg accessibility, integrating diffusion, adsorption, and complexation processes that regulate exposure to benthic

An integrated approach to characterize deep sediment toxicity in Genoa submarine canyons (NW Mediterranean).

The aim of this study was to evaluate deep sediment toxicity in Genoa submarine canyons (Northwestern Mediterranean), for the first time, by using an integrated approach that combined chemistry and ecotoxicology. Sediments were collected from the main submarine canyons in the Gulf of Genoa (Polcevera and Bisagno) and along the adjacent Western Open Slope. A multi-endpoint ecotoxicological approach was taken by exposing two crustacean larvae (Amphibalanus amphitrite and Artemia sp.). Lethal and sub-lethal responses (mortality, swimming behavior) were investigated. Chemical analysis showed that

Recommendations for ecotoxicity testing with stygobiotic species in the framework of groundwater environmental risk assessment.

As a consequence of the growing global dependence on groundwater resources, environmental risk assessments (ERA) for groundwater are increasingly required and, with that, ecotoxicological studies with groundwater fauna (stygofauna). However, the literature on the ecotoxicological studies with stygobiotic species (i.e. species that complete their life cycle exclusively in groundwater) has not expanded significantly since the first paper published in this field. The limitations regarding the use of stygobiotic species for ecotoxicological testing are clear and consistent across the globe; stygob

Cold storage effects on lethal and sublethal responses of Amphibalanus amphitrite Nauplii.

Bioassays are extensively used in ecotoxicology and there is a constant need for even more sensitive, reliable and easy to rear and obtain model organisms. Larvae of the crustacean Amphibalanus amphitrite are a good ecotoxicological model, for their high sensitivity to a wide range of toxicants and emerging contaminants. A standardized protocol for this toxicity bioassay has been recently proposed. Nevertheless, a limit of this model organism is the lack of resting stages and the need to use larvae immediately after their release from adults, thus increasing laboratory efforts related to the m
