The plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus cereus AR156 induces systemic resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana by simultaneously activating salicylate- and jasmonate/ethylene-dependent signaling pathways.

Bacillus cereus AR156 is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium that induces resistance against a broad spectrum of pathogens including Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000. This study analyzed AR156-induced systemic resistance (ISR) to DC3000 in Arabidopsis ecotype Col-0 plants. Compared with mock-treated plants, AR156-treated ones showed an increase in biomass and reductions in disease severity and pathogen density in the leaves. The defense-related genes PR1, PR2, PR5, and PDF1.2 were concurrently expressed in the leaves of AR156-treated plants, suggesting simultaneous activation of the

Population structuring of Glossina palpalis gambiensis (Diptera: Glossinidae) according to landscape fragmentation in the Mouhoun river, Burkina Faso.

The impact of landscape fragmentation due to human and climatic mediated factors on the structure of a population of Glossina palpalis gambiensis Vanderplank (Diptera: Glossinidae) was investigated in the Mouhoun river basin, Burkina Faso. Allele frequencies at five microsatellite loci, and metric properties based on 11 wing landmarks, were compared between four populations. The populations originated from the Mouhoun river and one of its tributaries. The average distance between samples was 72 km with the two most widely spaced populations being 216 km apart. The sampling points traversed an

Vitamin B1 functions as an activator of plant disease resistance.

Vitamin B(1) (thiamine) is an essential nutrient for humans. Vitamin B(1) deficiency causes beriberi, which disturbs the central nervous and circulatory systems. In countries in which rice (Oryza sativa) is a major food, thiamine deficiency is prevalent because polishing of rice removes most of the thiamine in the grain. We demonstrate here that thiamine, in addition to its nutritional value, induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in plants. Thiamine-treated rice, Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), and vegetable crop plants showed resistance to fungal, bacterial, and viral infections. Thi

River-specific macrogenomic diversity in Simulium guianense s. l. (Diptera: Simuliidae), a complex of tropical American vectors associated with human onchocerciasis.

Simulium guianense Wise is a Latin American vector complex of black flies associated with transmission of the causal agent of human onchocerciasis (river blindness). An analysis of the chromosomal banding patterns of 607 larvae of S. guianense s. l. revealed a high level of variation involving 83 macrogenomic rearrangements across 25 populations in Brazil, French Guiana, and Venezuela. The 25 populations were assigned to 13 cytoforms (A1, A2, B1-B4, C, D, E1-E4, and F), some of which are probably valid species. Based on geographical proximity, a member of the B group of cytoforms probably repr

Functional and Character Disparity Are Decoupled in Turtle Mandibles.

Turtles have high shape variation of their mandibles, likely reflecting adaptations to a broad variety of food items and ingestion strategies. Here, we compare functional disparity measured by biomechanical proxies and character disparity measured by discrete morphological characters. Functional and character disparities vary between clades and ecological groups and are thus decoupled. Comparisons with cranial disparity also indicate decoupled patterns within the turtle skull. Exploration of mandibular patterns reveals that several biomechanical configurations or character state combinations c

Wild boar as a potential reservoir of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens.

The wild boar (Sus scrofa) population has increased dramatically over the last decades throughout Europe and it has become a serious pest. In addition, the common habitat of wild boar and of the tick, Ixodes ricinus, indicates the potential of wild boar to play a role in epidemiology of epizootic and zoonotic tick-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In Europe, epidemiological cycles and reservoirs of A. phagocytophilum, including its zoonotic haplotypes, are poorly understood. In this study, we focused on detection and further genetic characterization of A. phagocytophilum an

From laboratory to field studies - The assessment of Biscutella laevigata suitability to biological reclamation of areas contaminated with lead and cadmium.

The aim of the work was to evaluate the usefulness of the in vitro multiplication of Biscutella laevigata calamine ecotype for in situ reclamation of post-flotation wastes polluted with Pb and Cd. The experiment was conducted on three steps: (i) plant shoots' production under in vitro condition, (ii) establishment of the material in greenhouse experiment, and finally (iii) field cultivation directly on the mining-waste heap of Olkusz Ore-Bearing Region, Poland. This region is known to be one of the most chemically-degraded area in central Europe. The laboratory-set in vitro analysis enabled to

Clinal differentiation and putative hybridization in a contact zone of Pinus ponderosa and P. arizonica (Pinaceae).

The widely distributed Pinus subsection Ponderosae is a species complex that has a transition zone among taxa in the southwestern United States. In southern Arizona and New Mexico at least two recognized taxa, Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum and Pinus arizonica or P. ponderosa var. arizonica, are known to coexist in close proximity. In this study, we report the existence of populations where the taxa are sympatric. One of the key characteristics distinguishing taxa is the number of needles per fascicle; P. ponderosa typically has three, P. arizonica has five. We examined the spatial distributi

Independent modulation of Arabidopsis thaliana polyubiquitin mRNAs in different organs and in response to environmental changes.

The highly conserved protein ubiquitin is encoded by five polyubiquitin genes in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia that have been divided into two subtypes, the UBQ3/UBQ4 subtype and the UBQ10/UBQ11/UBQ14 subtype. Northern analysis using gene-specific oligonucleotides as hybridization probes and enzyme activity measurements from transgenic plants expressing beta-glucuronidase (GUS) under the control of individual polyubiquitin 5' flanking regions were used to determine the development and environmental regulation of polyubiquitin transcription and mRNA accumulation. Ecological factors and genetic features are associated with ecological generalism in pathogenic tick-borne viruses.

Emerging and re-emerging tick-borne viruses (TBVs) have caused numerous outbreaks recently, yet the factors driving their emergence and pathogenicity in humans remain poorly understood across viral taxa. A large-scale analysis integrating epidemiological and genomic data of pathogenic TBVs reveal that highly pathogenic TBVs (HPTBVs) tend to exhibit ecological generalism. Specifically, HPTBVs infect a broader range of tick species, animal hosts, and ecotypes, which likely enhance their transmission to humans. Bird migration is identified as the primary driver for geographic spread of HPTBVs thr

Phenotypic plasticity of leaf shape along a temperature gradient in Acer rubrum.

Both phenotypic plasticity and genetic determination can be important for understanding how plants respond to environmental change. However, little is known about the plastic response of leaf teeth and leaf dissection to temperature. This gap is critical because these leaf traits are commonly used to reconstruct paleoclimate from fossils, and such studies tacitly assume that traits measured from fossils reflect the environment at the time of their deposition, even during periods of rapid climate change. We measured leaf size and shape in Acer rubrum derived from four seed sources with a broad

Investigating the distribution of a rare Colombo-Venezuelan kissing bug, Rhodnius neivai, Lent, 1953, using geographical information system-based analyses.

BACKGROUND: Rhodnius neivai, a kissing bug found in the dry regions of Colombia and Venezuela, has limited documented occurrences. While it is not deemed a significant vector for Chagas disease, distributional and ecological studies are essential in monitoring species domiciliation and shedding light on the evolutionary aspects of the Rhodniini tribe. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to provide a detailed revision of R. neivai distribution and evaluate general spatial data quality for ecological niche modelling (ENM). It will also provide the first published ENM for the species, which may aid speci

Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Particulate Phosphorus and Their Correlation with Environmental Factors in a Shallow Eutrophic Chinese Lake (Lake Taihu).

Spatial and seasonal variations of particulate phosphorus (PP) in a large shallow, eutrophic Lake Taihu with different ecotypes (including a phytoplankton-dominated zone, lake center zone, estuary zone and macrophyte-dominated zone) were investigated. The results showed that particulate organic phosphorus (POP) was the dominant form of PP (>88.0%). The concentration of POP showed higher levels in the bloom-sensitive northwestern zone (phytoplankton-dominated zone and estuary zone) during warm seasons, phytoplankton blooms and input of exogenous particulate matter were the main sources of POP i

The leucine-rich repeat domain can determine effective interaction between RPS2 and other host factors in arabidopsis RPS2-mediated disease resistance.

Like many other plant disease resistance genes, Arabidopsis thaliana RPS2 encodes a product with nucleotide-binding site (NBS) and leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domains. This study explored the hypothesized interaction of RPS2 with other host factors that may be required for perception of Pseudomonas syringae pathogens that express avrRpt2 and/or for the subsequent induction of plant defense responses. Crosses between Arabidopsis ecotypes Col-0 (resistant) and Po-1 (susceptible) revealed segregation of more than one gene that controls resistance to P. syringae that express avrRpt2. Many F(2) and F

Evaluation of genetic studies on camels in Saudi Arabia: traits, tools, and applications.

In Saudi Arabia, the dromedary camel (Arabian camel) has enormous cultural, economic, and ecological importance. Nevertheless, camel genetic studies and breeding have lagged behind those of other livestock species in the past. This review summarizes findings from recent research on the genetic diversity, population structure, and functional traits of Saudi Arabian camels. It presents the application of molecular technologies, including microsatellite markers, mitochondrial DNA, whole-genome sequencing, and multi-omics approaches, in studying camel phenotypes such as milk yield, growth rate, an

Melatonin Regulates Chloroplast Protein Quality Control via a Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling Pathway.

Serotonin N-acetyltransferase 1 (SNAT1), the penultimate enzyme for melatonin biosynthesis has shown N-acetyltransferase activity toward multiple substrates, including histones, serotonin, and plastid proteins. Under two different light conditions such as 50 or 100 μmol m-2 s-1, a SNAT1-knockout (snat1) mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia (Col-0) exhibited small size phenotypes relative over wild-type (WT) Arabidopsis Col-0. Of note, the small phenotype is stronger when growing at the 50 μmol m-2 s-1, exhibiting a dwarfism phenotype and delayed flowering. The snat1 Arabidopsis Col-

Hypobaric Resilience of Matrix Polysaccharide Biosynthesis in Plants.

Space habitats and transit vehicle interiors are proposed to operate at less than one Earth atmosphere (hypobaria) to minimize engineering costs in space-based bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS). Understanding how plants are affected by lower-pressure spaceflight environments and associated stressors will be vital for their use in life support within BLSS habitats. Whereas much is known about plant physiology in hypobaria, including the differential expression of genes involved in cell wall metabolism, little is known about the effects of hypobaria on plant cell wall matrix polysaccha

Microbial dysbiosis and wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers: a mini review with a note on the role of artificial intelligence.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious diabetes-related complication characterized by high rates of amputation and mortality. Emerging evidence suggests that DFUs are not simply the result of infection, but also involve microbiome dysbiosis, which impairs healing. Systemically, disturbances to the gut microbiota via the gut-skin axis promote systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Locally, skin microbial diversity is significantly reduced, allowing opportunistic pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa to form resilient biofilms. These biofilms resist anti

An Overview of Aegilops tauschii-Associated Wheat Damage and Generic Resources.

A. tauschii is the wild progenitor that contributed the D genome to common wheat. Since the 1990s, however, it has progressively become a destructive weed in northern China, posing a serious threat to wheat production. This review systematically summarizes current knowledge of A. tauschii, including its taxonomy, population differentiation, mechanisms underlying infestation and crop damage, environmentally sustainable management strategies, and the exploitation of its genetic resources. Two ecotypes have been identified in China: the wild-type and the weed-type. The weed-type spreads rapidly t

From Invaginating Site to Deep Lesion: Spatial Transcriptomics Unravels Ectopic Endometrial Penetration Features in Adenomyosis.

Adenomyosis, characterized by clinical intractability, significantly impacts female fertility and life quality due to the absence of definitive diagnostic markers and effective treatment options. The invagination theory is a primary hypothesis for adenomyosis, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, a spatial transcriptional landscape of adenomyosis with an evident invagination structure is mapped from the endometrial invaginating site to ectopic lesions utilizing spatial transcriptomics and single-cell RNA sequencing. In addition, the authors employ bulk RNA seq
