Context Many people worldwide lack access to surgical care. Surgical access is inequitably distributed worldwide, with the burden falling most heavily on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to geographical, financial, and educational barriers. Due to various challenges, surgical access and training in LMICs differ significantly from high-income countries (HICs). In LMICs, limited resources, infrastructure, and healthcare workforce shortages often lead to inadequate surgical care, with essential surgeries frequently inaccessible to a substantial portion of the population. The rising incidence of microplastics (MPs) is a possible health risk to humans. The present study aims to analyze the presence of MPs in intravenous (IV) infusions and compare MP concentrations from multiple brands. The IV solutions of 29 medical devices (IV-MDs) from seven brands commercialized in Ecuador, Spain, and Italy have been selected under specific consideration to carry out the study. The detection of MPs has been quite obvious in almost all of the samples from brands in the mentioned countries. MP concentrations ranged from 9 to 20 MPs/L in glass containers to 166-299 MPs/L in plas

Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has enormously impacted healthcare systems, especially in low and middle-income countries. Coinfections with respiratory pathogens in COVID-19 patients may contribute to worse outcomes. This study identified the presence of 12 viral coinfections and pneumococcal carriers among individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection in outpatient and community settings in Ecuador. From January 2020 to November 2021, 215 nasopharyngeal and nasal swabs were taken from individuals who reported symptoms of COVID-19 or had known exposure to someone with confirmed

The analysis of domestic pig movements has become useful to understand the disease spread patterns and epidemiology, which facilitates the development of more effective animal diseases control strategies. The aim of this work was to analyse the static and spatial characteristics of the pig network, to identify its trading communities and to study the contribution of the network to the transmission of classical swine fever. In this regard, we used the pig movement records from the National Veterinary Service of Ecuador (2017-2019), using social network analysis and spatial analysis to construct

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections have many negative health outcomes (e.g., diarrhea, nutritional deficiencies) that can also exacerbate poverty. These infections are generally highest among low-income populations, many of which are also undergoing market integration (MI; increased participation in a market-based economy). Yet the direct impact of MI-related social and environmental changes on STH infection patterns is poorly understood, making it unclear which lifestyle factors should be targeted to better control disease spread. This cross-sectional study examines if hou

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem in human and veterinary medicine. Here we show that 6.25% of the guinea pigs studied in Ecuador, raised as livestock, carry methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the nasopharynx and therefore may potentially play a role in the transmission of MRSA in the Andean Region of South America.

Human brucellosis in Ecuador is underreported and based only on passive surveillance. Since 2008, brucellosis was removed from the list of communicable diseases in the country. Until now, the true human brucellosis picture has not yet been determined. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of the disease, identify risk factors associated with brucellosis seropositivity in humans, and isolate circulating strains of Brucella spp. in the northwestern part of Ecuador. Between 2006 and 2008, a large transect survey was conducted, based on blood sampling of people from the northwe

Grassroots recyclers play a fundamental role in solid waste management in Ecuador; however, they often work under precarious conditions that may compromise their health. This study aimed to identify factors associated with nutritional status, operationalized as the presence or absence of nutritional alterations, among grassroots recyclers through supervised machine learning approaches. Data from 303 recyclers from three Ecuadorian cities (Cuenca, Macas, and La Libertad) were analyzed, incorporating sociodemographic, occupational, and health-related variables. Nutritional alterations were defin

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia (SCZ) and other related factors could be associated with specific nutritional problems. Some serum biomarkers could be involved in the clinical presentation of psychotic disorders. These individuals could have significantly lower bone mineral density (BMD) and a higher prevalence of osteoporosis comparatively.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to assess the association of key elements of the nutritional status between patients with SCZ and other mental illnesses to promote effective treatment plans.
METHODS: This was an observational, cross-sectional study w

The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) is commonly used as a laboratory model or kept as a pet in many Western countries; however, in Andean countries like Ecuador, it is raised as livestock. Despite its importance to rural local economies, specific management guidelines for guinea pig farming have not been enforced by animal or public health authorities. Several reports indicate that guinea pigs raised as livestock serve as incidental host for respiratory and enteric pathogens, including Toxoplasma gondii. This study analysed the seroprevalence of antibodies against several pathogens relevant to pu

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by female sandflies of the genus Lutzomyia. Ecuador is divided into three distinct natural regions: the Andes, the Coast, and Amazonia, each characterized by significant variations in altitude and climate. While most reported cases of leishmaniasis are associated with humid, low-altitude rural areas, our study uncovered an unexpected trend: confirmed cases occurring in traditionally cold Andean regions. To investigate this issue, we conducted a cross-sectional ecological study using official morbidity and mortality records from the Ecuadorian He

This report describes the first documented case in Ecuador of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri, in coinfection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) associated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). A 23-year-old male with a history of severe traumatic brain injury developed central nervous system infection symptoms after VPS placement. Despite targeted antibiotics for MRSA, clinical deterioration continued. Whole genome sequencing confirmed N. fowleri, prompting antiparasitic treatment with amphotericin B and fluconazole, resulting in partial

Municipal solid waste management is one of the greatest challenges for environmental sustainability and well-being in developing countries, where the infrastructure and financial resources required to carry out such services are often lacking. The design of solutions that adequately respond to local needs must be based on quality information about the quantity and composition of the generated waste and current management practices. This study evaluated domestic waste generation and its management in 81 communities in Ecuador based on sampling at the source and population surveys. An average ho

Understanding the behavior of cyanide in rivers is of utmost importance as it has a direct impact on the health of people who depend on these water sources. Cyanide contamination from gold mining activities poses a significant environmental threat to river ecosystems, particularly in southern Ecuador. This study aimed to investigate the behavior of cyanide when it enters contact with other metals in these rivers. Simulations were conducted to determine the speciation of cyanide, mercury, arsenic, lead, and manganese in a study area, taking into account the water temperature and pH at four loca

BACKGROUND: Intestinal infectious diseases are a global concern in terms of morbidity, and they are closely linked to socioeconomic variables such as quality of life, weather and access to healthcare services. Despite progress in spatial analysis tools and geographic information systems in epidemiology, studies in Ecuador that evaluate temporal trends, specific geographic groups, and their correlation with socioeconomic variables are lacking. The absence of such information makes it challenging to formulate public health policies. This study sought to identify the spatial and temporal patterns

Less common tropical fruits have been the subject of little research, leaving a vast field to be explored. In this context, a comprehensive study was carried out on the bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of 51 non-traditional fruits consumed in Ecuador. Vitamin C, organic acids, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds were evaluated using microextraction and rapid resolution liquid chromatography (RRLC) techniques, while antioxidant activity was measured using microplate readings. The results showed high levels of vitamin C (768.2 mg/100 g DW) in Dovyalis hebecarpa, total organic acids (
