Students with reading and spelling disabilities: peer groups and educational attainment in secondary education.

The present study investigated whether the members of adolescents' peer groups are similar in reading and spelling disabilities and whether this similarity contributes to subsequent school achievement and educational attainment. The sample consisted of 375 Finnish adolescents whose reading and spelling disabilities were assessed at age 16 with the Finnish dyslexia screening test. The students also completed a sociometric nomination measure that was used to identify their peer groups. Register information on participants' school grades also was available, and educational attainment in secondary

Reimagining Dental Education Summit Working Group 4: Consensus Recommendations for Structural Interprofessional Education in Dental Training.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of attention to interprofessional education (IPE) in dental education, many programs still operationalize IPE as episodic exposure rather than as a durable, assessable competence embedded in clinical workflows. This gap limits the translation of IPE into interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), particularly for medically complex patients and populations most affected by fragmented care. OBJECTIVE: To move IPE from ceremonial participation to structural integration across predoctoral dental education and clinical training environments, by developing consensu

Medical education from a succession perspective: what can the apprenticeship model bring to competency-based education?

This Scholarly Perspective frames workplace-based training in medical education as a succession concept and explores how the benefits of the traditional apprenticeship model can integrate with modern competency-based medical education. In 2024, the author broadened the construct of medical competence into 3 semi-hierarchical layers: canonical, contextual, and personalized. Canonical competence (the canon that all professionals should know) relates to knowledge and skills that meet generalized, context-independent standards, assessed with methods of high psychometric quality. Personalized compe

Lymphedema Education Advocacy Program (LEAP): Addressing Gaps in Patient Education of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema (BCRL).

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a noncurable condition that is underdocumented and underrecognized. This study assesses the effectiveness of BCRL education at the first postoperative visit, via qualitative research methods, with the goal of establishing an effective BCRL educational protocol. We hypothesized that the current BCRL education provided is insufficient, and patients would benefit from a standardized, more comprehensive educational protocol to improve BCRL understanding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients received standardized written educational materials abo

Academic half days, noon conferences and classroom-based education in postgraduate medical education: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Classroom-based education (CBE) is ubiquitous in postgraduate medical education (PGME), but to date no studies have synthesized the literature on the topic. We conducted a scoping review focusing on academic half days and noon conferences. METHODS: We searched 4 databases (MEDLINE [OVID], Embase [OVID], ERIC [EBSCO] and Web of Science) from inception to December 2021, performed reference and citation harvesting, and applied predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria to our screening. We used 2 frameworks for the analysis: "experiences, trajectories and reifications" and "descr

Educational Interventions for Professional Identity Formation in Undergraduate Medical Education: A Scoping Review.

Professional identity formation (PIF) is the process through which medical students integrate professional values, norms, and behaviours into their developing professional identity. Although PIF is increasingly recognised as an educational goal in undergraduate medical education (UGME), intervention research remains heterogeneous in educational approaches, theoretical foundations, outcome measurement, and geographic distribution. This scoping review mapped educational interventions designed to support PIF in UGME, their theoretical foundations, outcome and measurement approaches, and geographi

Cracking the code: using educational gaming for high-level thinking in physiology education.

The multidisciplinary nature of physiology requires students to acquire, retain, apply, and evaluate knowledge from different scientific disciplines. Optimal learning techniques, such as active learning, interleaving topics and conditions, and recall, can greatly enhance the speed and effectiveness with which students achieve this type of higher-order thinking. However, developing and implementing optimal learning techniques in the classroom can be both time-intensive and challenging for the instructor. In addition, students may be resistant or slow to accept novel learning processes. One way

Virtual Haptic Perception as an Educational Assistive Technology: A Case Study in Inclusive Education.

The traditional educational process of blind people is a complex practice that relies on the haptic perception (tactile perception) of physical models. However, physical models may be costly, inaccessible or may require a large storage space. To overcome these difficulties, in this article a virtual haptic perception approach to support the teaching and learning process of blind people is proposed. The proposed approach combines the use of virtual reality and haptic technologies. The research aim is to objectively evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of using virtual haptic perception in

Using Conversation Analysis to Examine When Educational Videos Are Introduced in Patient Education

Abstract As the seas of advanced therapies have swelled in the last few decades, multiple myeloma patients have been empowered, encouraged, and sometimes required, to engage in their care. We applied a conversation analysis approach to 12 nurse-led education visits (1011 minutes of audio) containing reference to educational videos. We indexed extracts based on whether the nurse or patient first mention the video. Patients oriented toward the video to demonstrate knowledge (n=15; 88%) and clarify information (n=2; 12%). Nurses oriented toward the video either through positive (n=14; 39%), negat
