In this review we provide a summary of the observations made regarding advance preparation of the motor system when presenting a startling acoustic stimulus (SAS) during various movement tasks. The predominant finding from these studies is that if the participant is prepared to make a particular movement a SAS can act to directly and quickly trigger the prepared action. A similar effect has recently been shown in patients with Parkinson's disease. This "StartReact" effect has been shown to be a robust indicator of advance motor programming as it can involuntarily release whatever movement has

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can provide non-muscular communication and control for people with severe motor disabilities. Current BCIs use a variety of invasive and non-invasive methods to record brain signals and a variety of signal processing methods. Whatever the recording and processing methods used, BCI performance (e.g. the ability of a BCI to control movement of a computer cursor) is highly variable and, by the standards applied to neuromuscular control, could be described as ataxic. In an effort to understand this imperfection, this paper discusses the relevance of two principles

During embryonic development chick and mouse spinal cords are activated by highly rhythmic episodes of spontaneous bursting activity at very early stages, while motoneurons are still migrating and beginning to extend their axons to the base of the limb. While such spontaneous activity has been shown to be important in refining neural projections once axons have reached their targets, early pathfinding events have been thought to be activity independent. However, in-ovo pharmacological manipulation of the transmitter systems that drive such early activity has shown that early motor axon pathfin

Studies of serial sections and reconstructions of embryos at stage 13 (32) postovulatory days) revealed that the cranial neural tube in the investigated embryos possesses 15 neuromers: 1 telencephalic, 3 diencephalic, 3 mesencephalic, and 8 rhombencephalic. Within the primary efferent column all nuclei of the cranial nerves may be distinguished. Also fibers entering brain from cranial nerve ganglia form the common afferent tract. The relation of neuromers to the motor nuclei of the cranial nerves is following: M1-oculomotor, M2-trochlear, Rh2-trigeminal, Rh4-facial, Rh6-glossopharyngeal, Rh7-v

The function of the medial olivocochlear efferent system was observed in awake guinea pigs by recording, in the absence of ipsilateral external acoustic stimulation, the ensemble background activity (EBA) of the VIIIth nerve from an electrode chronically implanted on the round window of one ear. The EBA was measured by calculating the power value of the round window signal in the 0.5- to 2.5-kHz band after digital or analog (active) filtering. This EBA was compared with and without the addition of a low-level broadband noise to the opposite ear. The contralateral broadband noise (CLBN, 55 dB S

To better study the pivotal role of the ciliary muscle in ocular accommodation and aqueous humor outflow, a technique was developed to permit long-term reproducible stimulation of the muscle via the normal efferent neuronal pathway in cynomolgus monkeys. Following a small midline craniotomy, the stereotaxic coordinates of the Edinger-Westphal (E-W) nucleus were localized by contrast ventriculoradiography. A bipolar stimulating electrode was stereotaxically positioned to generate the maximum accommodative amplitude, and then permanently affixed to the surrounding cranium. Once experience was ga

The terminals of centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbs of goldfish were studied by electron microscopy after transection of the medial, lateral or entire olfactory tract. The centrifugal fibers originate in the telencephalic hemisphere, pass through both the medial and the lateral olfactory tract, and form synaptic contacts with dendrites in the granule cell layer.

This study examines the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) and its afferent and efferent connections. In Nissl-stained material, DNLL has three parts: dorsal, ventral, and lateral. Although each part contains neurons with similar Nissl patterns, the subdivisions may be distinguished by the size, shape, and orientation of the cells. The lateral DNLL contains a mixture of DNLL neurons and cells from the sagulum. Afferent connections to DNLL were investigated with anterograde axonal transport techniques. Bilateral inputs to DNLL arise from the anteroventral cochlear nucleus and latera

The hippocampus is a mammalian brain structure that expresses spatial representations1 and is crucial for navigation2,3. Navigation, in turn, intricately depends on locomotion; however, current accounts suggest a dissociation between hippocampal spatial representations and the details of locomotor processes. Specifically, the hippocampus is thought to represent mainly higher-order cognitive and locomotor variables such as position, speed and direction of movement4-7, whereas the limb movements that propel the animal can be computed and represented primarily in subcortical circuits, including t

The field of basal ganglia research is exploding on every level - from discoveries at the molecular level to those based on human brain imaging. A remarkable series of new findings support the view that the basal ganglia are essential for some forms of learning-related plasticity. Other new findings are challenging some of the basic tenets of the field as it now stands. Combined with the new evidence on learning-related functions of the basal ganglia, these studies suggest that the basal ganglia are parts of a brain-wide set of adaptive neural systems promoting optimal motor and cognitive cont

Feedback from sensory elements as well as projection from higher Central Nervous System structures modify the level and pattern of motor outflow to the respiratory muscles and hence ventilation. In this review we describe the different methods to evaluate the degree to which higher centers determine the level and pattern of ventilation and coordinate use of the respiratory muscles in healthy humans and in patients with a number of respiratory disorders.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the principal generator of circadian rhythms and is part of an entrainment system that synchronizes the animal with its environment. Here, we review the possible communication of timing information from the SCN to peripheral tissues involved in regulating fundamental physiological functions as revealed using a viral, transneuronal tract tracer, the pseudorabies virus (PRV). The sympathetic nervous system innervation of the pineal gland and the sympathetic outflow from brain to white adipose tissue were the first demonstrations of SCN-peripheral tissue conne

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this experiment was to address: 1) whether normal efferent system function is required for normal cochlear tuning as measured by distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) suppression in humans and 2) whether cochlear function, assessed by DPOAE suppression tuning, is normal in a small group of patients with auditory neuropathy.
DESIGN: DPOAE suppression tuning curves (STCs) are similar to other physiologic measures of tuning. They are generated by evoking a DPOAE with two simultaneously presented pure tones and then suppressing the distortion product with a t

The sensory neuron stimulant drug capsaicin stimulates primary afferent nerve endings in the guinea-pig small intestine, which in turn activate myenteric cholinergic neurons by an unknown mechanism. The tachykinins substance P and neurokinin A are present in primary afferent neurons. This study was performed to assess the possible involvement of endogenous tachykinins acting via neurokinin-1, neurokinin-2 and neurokinin-3 receptors in the contractile effect of capsaicin in the isolated guinea-pig ileum and oesophagus by using the receptor-specific antagonists GR 82334 (3 microM) for neurokinin

The physiology of the medial efferent olivocochlear system involves suppressive interactions of contralateral sounds on ipsilateral sound-evoked responses, but its role is largely unknown to date. Medial efferents act at the level of cochlear outer hair cells via cholinergic synapses and might affect their mechanical activity, thereby modulating auditory sensitivity. The aim of the present work was to obtain noninvasive measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOEs), which reflect outer hair cell function, in order to establish the characteristics of medial efferent-induced s

1. Studies were done to characterize responses of spinal neurons backfired from the ventrolateral medulla to renal and somatic stimuli. Experiments were performed on 31 cats that were anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Sixty-six spinal neurons were antidromically activated from the area of the lateral reticular nucleus or the ventrolateral reticular formation just rostral to the lateral reticular nucleus contralateral to the recording site. These cells could not be backfired from the medial reticular formation or from the spinothalamic tract just caudal to the thalamus. 2. Cells were located

Our aim was to locate brain regions projecting to all cranial motor nuclei involved in phonation simultaneously, that is, the ambiguus, trigeminal motor, facial, and hypoglossal nuclei. For this purpose, four squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were injected with horseradish peroxidase, each of the four nuclei in a different animal. Those regions retrogradely labeled in all four cases then were injected in another 29 animals with [3H]leucine for anterograde tracing. We found that the only region connected directly with all phonatory motor nuclei is a restricted portion of the pontine and medul

The observations that the dopamine concentration of the carotid body and efferent inhibition of carotid chemoreceptors are increased during chronic hypoxia led to the hypothesis that the inhibition was due to the effect of an increased dopamine release by the activity of carotid sinus nerve (CSN) efferents. The hypothesis was tested by measuring the effect of dopamine receptor blockade on efferent inhibition of carotid chemosensory responses to graded levels of arterial O2 partial pressure in chronically hypoxic and normoxic cats. Chronically hypoxic cats were prepared by exposing the cats to
