Many authors use a preliminary orthopedic procedure before cleft lip and palate surgical closure in order to prevent possible bone distortion following the rupture of the muscle belts resulting from the cleft. Actually, this is generally not only an orthopedic treatment but rather a surgical orthopedic step which includes lip adhesion before the surgical closure of the clefts. Following the procedures proposed by Georgiade and Latham, we have used since 1996 a treatment based on traction applied with an elastic chain on splints attached by transmaxillary pins for certain types of clefts, namel

Mimicking the native tissue microenvironment is critical for effective tissue regeneration. Mechanical cues and sustained biological cues are important factors, particularly in load-bearing tissues such as articular cartilage or bone. Carriers including hydrogels and nanoparticles have been investigated to achieve sustained release of protein drugs. However, it is difficult to apply such carriers alone as scaffolds for cartilage regeneration because of their weak mechanical properties, and they must be combined with other biomaterials that have adequate mechanical strength. In this study, we d

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the knee joint are two of the most frequently used joints in the body, with the mandibular condylar cartilage (MCC) and the articular cartilage (AC) covering the joint bone surfaces, respectively. Compromised MCC functions lead to various temporomandibular disorders (TMD), including TMJ osteoarthritis (TMJ OA); however, the mechanisms governing MCC homeostasis and its biomechanical properties are still poorly understood. In this study, we comprehensively compared the biological and biomechanical features of the MCC and AC in mice. Histological analysis on

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology, which can affect multiple organs. It usually presents with involvement of elastic cartilage of ear and nose and involvement of other organs like kidney and central nervous system. Here, we report a case of 60-year-old man, who initially presented with fever, polyarthritis, erythema nodosum and painful swelling and redness of both external ears admitted in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh on 13th December 2019. Two days after hospitalization, he developed sudden onset of proptosis w

Two cases of extralobar pulmonary sequestrations from a walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) and a Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) are described in the present study. Grossly, an independent, soft unilocular cystic mass was found within the abdominal cavities of both animals, adherent to the diaphragm in O. rosmarus and attached to the cardia of the stomach in E. jubatus. Histopathologically, the cysts were lined by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with abundant goblet cells, while the wall comprised of glands, hyaline cartilage, bronchiole- and alveolus-like structures, smooth muscle

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome is a relatively rare condition, mostly involving the trachea and main stem bronchi. It is caused either by the atrophy of elastic fibers or faulty fetal development of cartilage and smooth muscles, hence leading to an overall increase in the diameter of lower respiratory tract. No certain etiology was found in the majority of cases reported previously, however, several other connective tissue diseases have also been implicated with the congenital tracheobronchomegaly. One anecdotal case report mentioned the development of lung malignancy in a patient who had previously re

The effects of incubation and addition of growth factors to a chondrocyte-seeded collagen implant for cartilage repair were studied. Type I collagen matrices seeded with lapine articular chondrocytes and unseeded controls cultured in the presence and absence of fibroblast growth factor and insulin for 2, 6, and 9 weeks were subjected to biomechanical, biochemical, and histological analysis. Aggregate modulus of elasticity of seeded implants decreased by half at 6 weeks, then rose by a factor of 10 above initial values. Permeability of seeded implants and their controls decreased steadily. Glyc

INTRODUCTION: Cartilage is an important source in supporting the structure of the nose for dorsal augmentation rhinoplasty. However, it is known that its viability is not always on the ideal level. Various wrapping materials are used to increase the strength of cartilage. Donor site morbidity, which develops following the harvesting of both cartilage and fascia as one such cover material, has attracted interest in recent years.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential of dermis and tendon autografts as alternatives to fascia and cartilage.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The samp

Enzootic calcinosis in Corriedale sheep was characterized by degeneration and mineralization of elastic connective tissue of aorta, arteries, lung, and kidney and by ulceration of cartilage of joints of limbs. Results of serum chemical analysis revealed low Ca X P value and significantly low, but inconsistent magnesium concentration and normal inorganic phosphorus content. The Ca:P ratio in bone was low in affected sheep. Clinicopathologically, calcinosis of sheep at Mattewara, India, appeared to be similar to the disease described as Enteque seco in South America, Naalehu disease in Hawaii, M

The integrity of articular cartilage is essential for a healthy joint. In joint disease, such as osteoarthritis, articular cartilage is degraded, compromising its functions of load transmission and lubrication, ultimately leading to joint pain that limits mobility. Tissue-penetrating bioagents, such as hyaluronic acid, have been used to stabilize and reinforce degenerated cartilage. Yet, the effect of the bioagents on the dynamic mechanical behaviour of articular cartilage is understudied. Here, we investigated the effect of a tissue-penetrating, photocrosslinkable hyaluronic acid methacrylate

The exceptional functional performance of articular cartilage (load-bearing and lubrication) is attributed to its poroelastic structure and resulting interstitial fluid pressure. Despite this, there remains no engineered cartilage repair material capable of achieving physiologically relevant poroelasticity. In this work we develop in silico models to guide the design approach for poroelastic mimics of articular cartilage. We implement the constitutive models in FEBio, a PDE solver for multiphasic mechanics problems in biological and soft materials. We investigate the influence of strain rate,

The finding of other investigators that increased water content is often associated with signs of a torn collagen network in human osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage led to this study. In the Pond-Nuki model of post-traumatic OA experimental but not control femoral condylar cartilage showed evidence of breakdown and stiffening of collagen network as assessed by measurement of swelling properties and indentation behaviour respectively. These changes in the unstable knees occurred despite lack of erosion of that surface cartilage ascertained from carbon black mapping and history. The stiffening rathe

Faced with a patient suffering from patellofemoral arthritis, the surgeon must determine the pathophysiology of the condition, because different causes demand different treatments. Possible causes include malalignment, patellofemoral dysplasia, patellofemoral instability, patellofemoral trauma, obesity, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and a genetic predisposition. Arthritis secondary to malalignment, dysplasia, instability, or trauma is less likely than arthritis secondary to the other causes to progress to femorotibial arthritis.

AIMS: Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a critical determinant of tissue mechanobiology, yet remains poorly characterized in joint tissues beyond cartilage in osteoarthritis (OA). This review aimed to define the composition and architecture of non-cartilage soft joint tissue structural ECM in human OA, and to compare the changes observed in humans with those seen in animal models of the disease.
METHODS: A systematic search strategy, devised using relevant matrix, tissue, and disease nomenclature, was run through the MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus databases. Demographic, clinical, and biological dat

To investigate auricular reconstruction by tissue engineering means, this study compared cartilage regenerated from human chondrocytes obtained from either microtia or normal (conchal) tissues discarded from otoplasties. Isolated cells were expanded in vitro, seeded onto nanopolyglycolic acid (nanoPGA) sheets with or without addition of bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP7), and implanted in nude mice for 10 weeks. On specimen harvest, cartilage development was assessed by gross morphology, histology, and RT-qPCR and microarray analyses. Neocartilages from normal and microtia surgical tissues we

PURPOSE: Prominent ear is one of the most common congenital deformities in the head and neck region. More than 100 techniques have been described for correction of prominent ears in literature. Mustarde technique is one of the most widely accepted procedures of otoplasty. In our study, we used a surgical method using a drill for correction of prominent ears in combination with the Mustarde technique. Patients with only lack of antihelical fold were included the study.
METHODS: Thirty patients were operated on during 2007-2010. The angle of prominent ear from the mastoid tip to the tip of the

Morphological data on the eyelids, the third eyelid (nictitating membrane), and the orbital glands remain limited for many Anguimorpha, including the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). The ocular adnexa contribute to eye protection, lubrication, and immune defense, and they may also reflect ecological and phylogenetic variation within Squamata. The objective of this study was to describe the gross anatomical, histological, histochemical, and polarized-light microscopy characteristics of the upper and lower eyelids, third eyelid, Harderian gland, and lacrimal gland in the Komodo dragon. Depending on the severity of the condition and associated risk, surgical intervention may not always be the first choice. This is true for treating chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. For both conditions, novel non-surgical treatments have been developed to gradually alleviate the malformation making use of the elastic nature of the costal cartilages at an early age of the patient. To quantify the performance of such treatments, this paper introduces and discusses the development of a software-based instrument that utilizes 3D chest optical images (surface sca

Melt electrowriting (MEW) is an innovative additive manufacturing technology utilized for producing fibrous three-dimensional structures for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. While polycaprolactone (PCL) is the predominant polymer employed in MEW, its limited elasticity and slow degradation rate restrict its effectiveness in tissue regeneration. This study investigates the printability of medical-grade poly(L-lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL), which has a faster degradation rate, resulting in MEW PLCL scaffolds characterized by uniform fiber diameter, regular layer stack
