Hydrogels as potential probes for investigating the mechanism of lenticular presbyopia.

PURPOSE: To synthesize and characterize hydrogels with viscoelastic properties comparable to those of the natural lens. METHODS: Hydrogels were synthesized in water by free-radical polymerization of the monomer poly(ethyleneglycol)-monomethacrylate. Three different molecular weights of poly(ethyleneglycol)-dimethacrylates were used as crosslinkers. For each crosslinker used, five different monomer-to-crosslinker weight ratios were utilized while the total mass of the reactants was kept constant. In another series, the concentration of the reactants was varied while the weight ratio of monomer

Elastic moduli of breast and prostate tissues under compression.

To evaluate the dynamic range of tissue imaged by elastography, the mechanical behavior of breast and prostate tissue samples subject to compression loading has been investigated. A model for the loading was validated and used to guide the experimental design for data collection. The model allowed the use of small samples that could be considered homogeneous; this assumption was confirmed by histological analysis. The samples were tested at three strain rates to evaluate the viscoelastic nature of the material and determine the validity of modeling the tissue as an elastic material for the str

Evaluation of intrinsic Young's modulus and stiffening effect of trodusquemine in phase-separated supported lipid bilayers.

The measurement of the Young's modulus of thin, soft films on solid support is affected by the presence of the so-called bottom effect artefact, which arises from the presence of a rigid substrate and increases the observed value of the elastic modulus of the sample. Here we measured the Young's modulus of a multicomponent, phase-separated supported lipid bilayer mimicking the biological membrane in the absence and presence of various concentrations of trodusquemine, which is a molecule with potential applications against neurodegenerative diseases. Applying the Garcia and Garcia theory for bo

Effect of radiation sterilization on the ability to induce adipose regeneration in vivo in decellularized adipose-derived matrix.

BACKGROUND: Decellularized adipose-derived matrix (DAM), a biological scaffold that can induce adipose regeneration. The balance between its sterilization efficiency and its ability to maintain in situ adipose regeneration should be considered in terminal sterilization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of radiation sterilization of cobalt-60 (60 Co)with different doses on adipogenesis induced by different forms of DAM, so as to reduce radiation dose under the premise of safe and effective sterilization and ensure adipogenesis induced by DAM in vivo. METHODS: High dose

Addressing Surface Effects at the Particle-Continuum Interface in a Molecular Dynamics and Finite Elements Coupled Multiscale Simulation Technique.

Atomistic-to-continuum coupling methods are used to unravel molecular mechanisms of polymers and polymer composites. These multiscale techniques advantageously combine the computational efficiency of continuum approaches while keeping the accuracy of particle-based methods. The Capriccio method [Pfaller et al. Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 2013, 260, 109-129.] is a well-proven multiscale technique, which connects finite elements (FE) with molecular dynamics (MD) in a partitioned-domain approach. A vital aspect of these multiscale methods is to provide physically sound boundary conditions to

Comparison of the compressive mechanical properties of auricular and costal cartilage from patients with microtia.

Children born with a small or absent ears undergo surgical reconstruction to restore their auricle. Currently, rib (costal) cartilage is used to carve the auricle. However as alternative, tissue engineered and synthetic materials are being developed to restore the auricle shape to overcome donor site morbidity and limited availability of rib cartilage. However, to date there is limited knowledge regarding the mechanical properties of the auricular and costal cartilage to optimise the required compressive properties of the graft. The remnant auricular and costal cartilage from 20 patients under

Thermosensitive and Highly Flexible Hydrogels Capable of Stimulating Cardiac Differentiation of Cardiosphere-Derived Cells under Static and Dynamic Mechanical Training Conditions.

Cardiac stem cell therapy has been considered as a promising strategy for heart tissue regeneration. Yet achieving cardiac differentiation after stem cell transplantation remains challenging. This compromises the efficacy of current stem cell therapy. Delivery of cells using matrices that stimulate the cardiac differentiation may improve the degree of cardiac differentiation in the heart tissue. In this report, we investigated whether elastic modulus of highly flexible poly(N-isopropylamide) (PNIPAAm)-based hydrogels can be modulated to stimulate the encapsulated cardiosphere derived cells (CD

Study on mechanical properties and energy evolution laws of layered sandy slate.

Understanding the mechanical behavior and energy evolution of layered hard rocks is of great significance for revealing the deformation and failure mechanisms of tunnels in layered surrounding rock and for proposing effective support measures. To investigate these properties in layered sandy slate, triaxial compression tests were conducted under different schistosity angles and confining pressures. The influence of schistosity and confining pressure on the strength, elastic modulus, and failure modes of sandy slate was analyzed in detail. Based on energy principles, the characteristics of ener

Elastic behavior of brain tissue in vivo.

A measurement system and a test sequence have been developed to determine the in vivo elastic response of brain tissue in terms of a pressure-depth ratio. This parameter appears sensitive to changes in the tissue environment that may occur due to the influence of, e.g., anesthetic agents, hyperventilation, etc., and thus may be useful in evaluating such influences. The measurements are made with the dura-arachnoid membranes intact, thus maintaining the influence of the cerebrospinal fluid compartment on the response behavior of the brain tissue that comprises the subpial region. As an integral

Compliant buffer layer achieves native-like cartilage stress in talar prosthesis: a finite element analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the talus presents considerable clinical challenges and is frequently associated with poor treatment outcomes. While 3D-printed customized talar prosthesis has shown promising potential in total talar replacement (TTR), current materials create a hard-soft mismatch with native cartilage, increasing local stress, accelerating wear, and causing complications. The objective of this study was to identify the most suitable combination of buffering layer material and thickness for talar prosthesis. METHODS: This study employed dynamic biplane radiography (DBR

Study on Anisotropic Mechanical Properties of Single-Crystal Silicon at Different Strain Rates.

To examine the impact of the strain rate on the anisotropic mechanical characteristics of single-crystal silicon, nanoindentation and micro-tensile-compression tests were performed. This study analyzed the effects of varying crystal orientations at different strain rates on load-displacement behavior, elastic modulus, hardness, fracture toughness, and true stress-strain responses. The nanoindentation results showed that at room temperature, single-crystal silicon exhibited an elastic recovery rate of approximately 42%. Notably, the elastic modulus remained unaffected by strain rate variations,

Influence of 8DSS peptide on nano-mechanical behavior of human enamel.

Aspartate-serine-serine (DSS) repeats are abundant in naturally occurring proteins that are critical for tooth formation. We recently developed octuplet repeats of aspartate-serine-serine (8DSS) peptides to promote the nucleation of calcium phosphate carbonate from free ions. In this paper, we report a possible role of 8DSS in promoting mineral deposition onto human enamel. Human enamel specimens were demineralized, exposed briefly to 8DSS solution, and then exposed to simulated body fluid that favors mineral deposition. At various stages of treatment, nano-mechanical behaviors, namely, hardne

The effect of standard and low-modulus cement augmentation on the stiffness, strength, and endplate pressure distribution in vertebroplasty.

PURPOSE: Vertebroplasty restores stiffness and strength of fractured vertebral bodies, but alters their stress transfer. This unwanted effect may be reduced by using more compliant cements. However, systematic experimental comparison of structural properties between standard and low-modulus augmentation needs to be done. This study investigated how standard and low-modulus cement augmentation affects apparent stiffness, strength, and endplate pressure distribution of vertebral body sections. METHODS: Thirty-nine human thoracolumbar vertebral body sections were prepared by removing cortical en

Explore the Pattern of Biomechanical Alterations in Vocal Fold Scar and Its Objective Quantitative Assessment Method.

OBJECTIVES: This research aims to discern the evolving nature of the biomechanical properties of vocal fold scarring by calculating Young's modulus for the vocal fold cover layer, the body layer, and the structure as a whole. The study also investigates the potential of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for determining these biomechanical characteristics quantitatively. METHODS: A total of six adult female Beagles were divided into two groups (A and B groups) for the creation of unilateral vocal fold scar models, each group containing three subjects. Five months postmodel creation, larynxes were

Effect of lipopolysaccharide, leukocytes, and monoclonal anti-lipid A antibodies on erythrocyte membrane elastance.

The micropipette aspiration technique was used to quantify membrane deformability of individual red blood cells (RBCs) before and after exposing whole blood and blood free of leukocytes to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The ability of an anti-lipid A monoclonal antibody (E5) to inhibit the effects of LPS was also investigated. In the LPS/whole blood studies, a significant increase in elasticity modulus was observed following incubation with LPS. An increase in elasticity modulus indicates a decrease in RBC membrane deformability. The effect depended on the incubation time but was not concentration-

Measurement of Young's modulus in the in vivo human vocal folds.

Currently, surgeons have no objective means to evaluate and optimize results of phonosurgery intraoperatively. Instead, they usually judge the vocal folds subjectively by visual inspection or by listening to the voice. This paper describes a new device that measures Young's (elastic) modulus values for the human vocal fold intraoperatively. Physiologically, the modulus of the vocal fold may be important in determining the nature of vocal fold vibration in normal and pathologic states. This study also reports the effect of recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation on Young's modulus of the human vo

Shear Wave Elasticity Imaging for Monitoring Risk of Skin Breakdown Following Subcutaneous Implantation.

Subcutaneous implants are widely used in craniofacial reconstruction to restore structural integrity and aesthetics; however, complications such as skin breakdown and implant exposure remain common and can significantly impact patient outcomes. These adverse events are hypothesized to be preceded by biomechanical changes in the overlying skin, including stiffness alterations resulting from increased mechanical stress and tissue remodeling. This study evaluates the feasibility of using ultrasound shear wave elasticity imaging as a non-invasive, quantitative tool to monitor skin stiffness follow

The effect of suboccipital muscle dysfunction on the biomechanics of the upper cervical spine: a study based on finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Muscle dysfunction caused by repetitive work or strain in the neck region can interfere muscle responses. Muscle dysfunction can be an important factor in causing cervical spondylosis. However, there has been no research on how the biomechanical properties of the upper cervical spine change when the suboccipital muscle group experiences dysfunction. The objective of this study was to investigate the biomechanical evidence for cervical spondylosis by utilizing the finite element (FE) approach, thus and to provide guidance for clinicians performing acupoint therapy. METHODS: By varyi
