High-voltage electric injury (HVEI) is associated with a high incidence of extremity compartment syndrome and of major amputation. The purpose of this study was to review our experience with HVEI and to attempt to develop predictors of the need for fasciotomy and amputation in patients with HVEI. The records of the 195 patients with HVEI who were admitted to a single burn center during a 19-year period were reviewed. Evidence for muscle necrosis, to include myoglobinuria and elevated creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels, was noted. A total 187 patients (95.9%) survived to hospital discharge. A

Electrical burns cause damage to the cardiovascular system through different mechanisms. Immediate cardiac arrhythmia is one of the common consequences. A large vessel blow out due to an electrical burn is rarely documented. It is often undetected due to its "silent" symptoms. This article reports a delayed obturator artery rupture in a 32-year-old male patient 6 weeks after he sustained severe high-voltage electrical burns. The vessel injury was treated with computed tomography (CT)-aided embolization. The patient recovered to an ambulatory status 10 weeks after the injury.

BACKGROUND: This article presents a retrospective analysis of a case series of patients requiring free tissue transfers for acute thermal and electrical injuries in a single burn center.
METHODS: Eight patients, in the period between 1997 and 2001, were referred for evaluation of extensive thermal injury to one or more extremities, which required free tissue transfer to achieve coverage. A total of 12 flaps were performed on eight patients. Data including flap type, flap viability, complications, hospital stays, length of rehabilitation, and time until return to work were collected.
RESULTS:

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the incidence, diagnosis and outcome of spinal cord injury in patients with electrical injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients with electrical injuries admitted to our Intensive Care Burn Unit over a 5 year period. Among 435 admissions, 57 (13.1% of all admissions) were electrical injuries, due to either electrical flash (n = 34) or high voltage (n = 23). Two cases (8.6% of high voltage injuries) presented signs of spinal cord injury. Both cases presented an acute transverse myelopathy, involving the pyramidal tract, the posterior cords and the

Myoglobinuria-induced acute renal failure (ARF) is a potentially lethal consequence of electrical injury. We describe clinical variables that can predict the risk of myoglobinuria and ARF following electrical injury. This was a retrospective multivariate analysis of risk factors among electrically injured patients over a 26-year period. Urine myoglobin status was documented in 162 patients; 14% had myoglobinuria. No patient developed ARF. Multivariate modeling revealed that high-voltage exposure, prehospital cardiac arrest, full-thickness burns, and compartment syndrome were associated with my

Case report on right branch block, acute pulmonary oedema and enteritis caused by electric shock in a boy. The invasive hemodynamic study showed primary pulmonary hypertension, cardiogenic shock, and acute respiratory failure. The outcome was good, with total and progressive recovery of all lesions. The literature review revealed the rarity of pulmonary oedema and enteritis after an electric shock. The invasive haemodynamic data suggest physiopathological explanations for findings in the case and indicate therapeutic measures for similar situations.

Reported is a case of electrical burn associated with cardiac injury and acute renal failure in a 21-year-old man. After coming into contact with a high-tension cable, he became drowsy and oliguria developed. Twenty-four hemodialyses were required. Although the ECG findings revealed an inferior wall myocardial infarction, neither cardiac scintigram (201TlCl) nor ultrasonic cardiography revealed any local lesions. In this case the cardiac damage following electrical burn appeared different from true myocardial infarction.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a highly prevalent condition, with just below 1 million new cases yearly, deriving for traumatic and non-traumatic causes. It is a significant cause for disability, greatly impacting quality of life of affected individuals, and as such, requires effective rehabilitation methods in order to maintain daily function. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is a helpful treatment, stimulating muscle contraction and plasticity through electrical currents.
METHODS: This is a Case-Report of two cases with different SCI causes, submitted to a 1-year treat

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries can be devastating, and data is lacking in low-resource settings. We aimed to identify predictors of mortality following electrical and lightning injuries (ELI) in Malawi.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational study of patients presenting with ELI and burn injuries at a tertiary hospital in Malawi from 2011 to 2020. Outcomes were compared and predictors of mortality were modeled.
RESULTS: A total of 382 ELI and 6371 burn patients were included. The mean ages for ELI and burn groups were 24 ± 14 and 11 ± 14 years, respectively (p < 0.01). Most p

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is often used to activate muscles impaired after spinal cord injury to elicit functional activities or to facilitate exercise. However, in addition to the cost and availability of NMES and the inherent muscle fatigue that is associated with its use may limit its widespread utilization. Optimizing stimulation parameters during NMES-induced contractions could maximize force production with less fatigue.Purpose: To examine the interrelationship of pulse duration and pulse frequency on torque production and muscle fatigue in both impaired and non-impaire

BACKGROUND: With the increasing popularity of electric scooters (ES) and the introduction of ES sharing systems in 2017, hospitals are seeing more ES-related injuries. The effects of sharing systems on traumatic injuries are lacking in the literature. We, therefore, sought to describe trends in ES injuries.
METHODS: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample was queried for patients hospitalized with ES-related injuries in the United States from 2015 to 2019. Admissions due to ES were divided into two cohorts: before (≤2017) and after (>2018) the introduction of sharing systems. Patients were stratified

BACKGROUND: Electric bicycles (E-bikes) are an increasingly popular means of transport, and have been designed for a higher speed comparable to that of small motorcycles. Accident statistics show that E-bikes are increasingly involved in traffic accidents. To test the hypothesis of whether accidents involving E-bikes bear more resemblance to motorcycle accidents than conventional bicyclists, this study evaluates the injury pattern and severity of E-bike injuries in direct comparison to injuries involving motorcycle and bicycle accidents.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the data o

This case report described the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with ectopic bone injury due to high-pressure electric shock. A 24-year-old male patient suffered from burns that covered 50% of TBSA, including on limbs and torso, after coming into contact with 10-kV high-voltage electricity. A repeated Meek micrografting technique (MEEK) was applied for wound healing; skin grafts were cut into micrografts and expanded at a ratio of 1:4 to cover large areas after burn trauma. After the injury, right elbow redness, fever, pains, and joint movement disorder were reported by the patient, which

High voltage electric burns can cause various ocular injuries and may manifest in the form of conjunctival hyperemia, corneal opacities, uveitis, miosis, spasm of accommodation, cataract, retinal edema, papilledema, choroidal rupture, chorio-retinal necrosis/atrophy, retinal detachment and optic atrophy. The involvement of crystalline lens exclusively with sparing of other ocular structures is rare. We report a case of 16 year old male with bilateral total cataract after electrical injury by over-head high tension electric transmission cable accidentally falling on patient's head 6 months back

Electrical muscle stimulation has been demonstrated to facilitate nerve regeneration and functional recovery, but the underlying mechanism remains only partially understood. In this study, we investigated the positive effect of electrical muscle stimulation following nerve injury and its molecular mechanisms of autophagy regulation. The sciatic nerves of Sprague-Dawley rats were transected and immediately repaired. Gastrocnemius muscles were electrically stimulated using surface electrodes. Motor functional recovery was assessed by gait analysis, nerve conduction examination and histological a

INTRODUCTION: Controversy exists over the effects of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on reinnervation. We hypothesized that intramuscular FES would not delay reinnervation after recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLn) axonotmesis.
METHODS: RLn cryo-injury and electrode implantation in ipsilateral posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) were performed in horses. PCA was stimulated for 20 weeks in eight animals; seven served as controls. Reinnervation was monitored through muscle response to hypercapnia, electrical stimulation and exercise. Ultimately, muscle fiber type proportions and minimum fi

INTRODUCTION: Neuroenhancing therapies are desired because repair of nerve injuries can fail to achieve recovery. We compared two neuroenhancing therapies, electrical stimulation (ES) and systemic tacrolimus (FK506), for their capabilities to enhance regeneration in the context of a rat model.
METHODS: Rats were randomized to four groups: ES 0.5 mA, ES 2.0 mA, FK506, and repair alone. All groups underwent tibial nerve transection and repair, and outcomes were assessed by using twice per week walking track analysis, cold allodynia response, relative muscle mass, and nerve histology.
