Robot-Inspired Human Impedance Control Through Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Functional Electrical Stimulation is an effective tool to foster rehabilitation of neurological patients suffering from impaired motor functions. It can also serve as an assistive device to compensate for compromised motor functions in the chronic phase occurring after a disease or trauma. In all cases, the dominant paradigm in FES applications is that of aiding specialized, task-specific movements, such as reaching or grasping. Usually this is achieved by targeting specific muscle groups which are associated to the targeted motion by experts. A general purpose, FES-based control theory capabl

[Birth of medical electricity].

In the mid-eighteenth century Jallabert treated an hemiplegia using electrostatic electricity and published the patient's recovery. Immediately, physicians and clergymen started to use the Nollet's machine to treat many neurological diseases and published their results. The Galvani's constant was also a medical seism when he though the had discovered animal electricity. Galvanism entered immediately medical practice for a long time.

Neurocapillary-Modulation.

OBJECTIVES: We consider two consequences of brain capillary ultrastructure in neuromodulation. First, blood-brain barrier (BBB) polarization as a consequence of current crossing between interstitial space and the blood. Second, interstitial current flow distortion around capillaries impacting neuronal stimulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed computational models of BBB ultrastructure morphologies to first assess electric field amplification at the BBB (principle 1) and neuron polarization amplification by the presence of capillaries (principle 2). We adapt neuron cable theory to devel

Walking Assistance System with Electrical Stimulation from Secondary Muscle Groups.

This research paper introduces an alternative solution for foot movement rehabilitation, bridging the gap between advanced technology and practical, everyday application. By integrating methods of electrostimulation with an electronic glove device, a novel approach to lower limb muscle rehabilitation is proposed. The device utilizes sensors and deep learning (DL) models with which it is equipped, translating hand movements into leg muscle stimulation. It offers a more accessible rehabilitation solution, with customization potential, which could enable users to regain mobility with increased in

Rapid, Dose-Dependent Enhancement of Cerebral Blood Flow by transcranial AC Stimulation in Mouse.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electrical stimulation at an appropriate dose may demonstrate intracranial effects, including neuronal stimulation and cerebral blood flow responses. OBJECTIVE: We performed in vivo experiments on mouse cortex using transcranial alternating current [AC] stimulation to assess whether cerebral blood flow can be reliably altered by extracranial stimulation. METHODS: We performed transcranial AC electrical stimulation transversely across the closed skull in anesthetized mice, measuring transcranial cerebral blood flow with a laser Doppler probe and intracranial electrica

Effect of Electrode Configuration and Impulse Strength on Airway Patency in Neurostimulation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) has gained increasing interest for the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) can both exclude improper airway collapse patterns and visualize airway changes under stimulation. Stimulation outcome effects depend on the impulse voltage and electric field resulting from the electrode configuration of the implanted device. The effects of various combinations of voltage and electric field on DISE airway patterns in contrast to awake endoscopy are unknown. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study.

Distribution of electric field in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder treated with deep brain stimulation of the bed nucleus of stria terminalis.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is being investigated as a treatment for therapy-refractory obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Many different brain targets are being trialled. Several of these targets such as the ventral striatum (including the nucleus accumbens (NAc)), the ventral capsule, the inferior thalamic peduncle, and the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST)) belong to the same network, are anatomically very close to one another, or even overlap. Data is still missing on how various stimulation parameters in a given target will affect surrounding anatomical areas and impac

Effectiveness of Different Electrical Stimulation Modalities for Pain and Masticatory Function in Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Temporomandibular disorders comprise a set of conditions that include alterations of the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles. Although different modalities of electric currents are widely used for treating temporomandibular disorders, previous reviews have suggested these are ineffective. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the effectiveness of different electrical stimulation modalities in patients with temporomandibular disorders for reducing musculoskeletal pain, increasing the range of movement, and improving muscle activity. An electronic search was con

Influence of segmentation accuracy in structural MR head scans on electric field computation for TMS and tES.

In several diagnosis and therapy procedures based on electrostimulation effect, the internal physical quantity related to the stimulation is the induced electric field. To estimate the induced electric field in an individual human model, the segmentation of anatomical imaging, such as magnetic resonance image (MRI) scans, of the corresponding body parts into tissues is required. Then, electrical properties associated with different annotated tissues are assigned to the digital model to generate a volume conductor. However, the segmentation of different tissues is a tedious task with several as

A predictive enhanced PID-F control strategy for functional electrical stimulation based on the artemisinin optimization algorithm.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing comfort and mobility for individuals with paralysis, neurological diseases, and compromised muscle function. It facilitates motions that would otherwise be challenging or unattainable for these persons. Achieving optimal performance from FES systems necessitates the formulation of a strong and efficient control approach. To address this need, this paper proposes a novel controller called predictive proportional-integral-filtered derivative (PPID-F), which incorporates a predictive term into a filtered PID controller

Deep brain stimulation in dystonia.

Renewed interest in stereotaxy for dystonia followed the introduction of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor in the 1990s. DBS evolved from ablative surgery, which was applied with varying results in the 1950s in patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia. The present review summarizes the current knowledge on clinical aspects of DBS in dystonia (Dec. 2002). Excellent results have been achieved in dystonic patients carrying a mutation in the DYT1 gene with improvements up to 90 %. Similar results may also be
