OBJECTIVE: The use of standing electronic scooters associated with micromobility applications (e-scooters) has risen nationally. The aim of this study was to obtain a detailed view of soft tissue and bony craniofacial injury associated with e-scooter-related trauma.
METHODS: Single-institution retrospective case series of patients presenting to a level 1 trauma center emergency department or trauma unit with documented e-scooter-related craniofacial injury.
RESULTS: Of 203 included patients, 188 (92.6%) patients sustained craniofacial injury. One hundred thirty-one (64.5%) had exclusively so

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) aims to alter brain function non-invasively by applying current to electrodes on the scalp. Decades of research and technological advancement are associated with a growing diversity of tES methods and the associated nomenclature for describing these methods. Whether intended to produce a specific response so the brain can be studied or lead to a more enduring change in behavior (e.g. for treatment), the motivations for using tES have themselves influenced the evolution of nomenclature, leading to some scientific, clinical, and public confusion. Electrical therapies for heart failure. Electrical therapies have to be considered in the treatment of heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular function. Intracardiac cardioverter defibrillators are in indicated in secondary prevention after the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias and in primary prevention to prevent sudden cardiac death related to ventricular arrhythmias. Cardiac resynchronization therapy in heart failure patients with ventricular conduction disturbances, especially left bundle branch block, improves symptoms, functional capacities and survival and significantly

OBJECTIVE: The effect of gestational age and other factors that could influence the outcome of an electric shock in pregnancy have not been defined yet. Objective of this study is to provide reliable data on medical issues linked to electric shock in pregnancy.
METHODS: Authors consulted the most important scientific databases investigating reactions to electric shock in pregnancy, analyzing mechanism of electric shock, gestational age at the time of injury, the post-shock complications, interval from injury to delivery and fetal and maternal outcome.
RESULTS: The spectrum of electrical inju

In resolving the issues in analyzing electrical hazards in an industry, we must follow a path that will lead to a comprehensive analysis of the problems that exist and provide a quantified value to ensure the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing. An analysis of all three hazards--shock, arc, and blast--must be completed and steps taken to prevent injuries. The following steps could be taken to ensure adequacy of the electrical safe work practices program and training of "qualified" electrical personnel: 1. Conduct a comprehensive Job Task Analysis. 2. Complete a

Electrical status epilepticus in sleep (ESES) describes an electroencephalographic pattern showing significant activation of epileptiform discharges in sleep. The terms continuous spike wave in slow-wave sleep (CSWS) and Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) describe the clinical epileptic syndromes seen with ESES. Although there is an overlap between these 2 syndromes, children with CSWS present with a more global regression have more problematic epilepsy and have EEG foci located predominantly in frontotemporal or frontocentral regions. In contrast, children with LKS present with an acquired audito

Epilepsy is among the most common neurologic disorders, yet it is estimated that about one third of patients do not respond favorably to currently available drug treatments and up to 50% experience major side effects of these treatments. Although surgical resection of seizure foci can provide reduction or cessation of seizure incidents, a significant fraction of pharmacologically intractable seizure patients are not considered viable candidates for such procedures. Research advances in applying electrical stimulation as an alternative treatment for intractable epilepsy have been reported. The

BACKGROUND: Electric burns are serious public health problems that comprise 3.5% of the burns that refer to the hospital. By biting and sucking the electric cords, mouth and lip burns occur in the children. The mortality rate is 90% in the children who had cardiac arrest before coming to the hospital. In this study, the electric burns that were followed-up in our clinic were reported.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four cases with electric burns followed-up in our clinic between September 2002 February 2003; were assessed. The cases were called back to control one and six months after the burn inciden

The aim of electric defibrillation of the heart is to salvage a greater percentage of victims of cardiac arrest in the future. An initial decisive pathway towards this goal is to get a defibrillator to the victim as quickly as possible and apply an electric shock. This has now been implemented on a large scale--by means of the widespread propagation of (semi-)automatic external defibrillators (AED) and their PAD (Public Access Defibrillator) variant for use by laypersons. This is an initial necessary prerequisite which, however, is not sufficient to have a real impact on saving lives. For expe

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment of tinnitus with electrical stimulation. Five hundred patients with tinnitus were treated with probe electrical stimulation. Causes of tinnitus were sensorineural hearing loss (303 patients), Meniere's disease (88), infection (25), head trauma (39), acoustic trauma (25), ototoxicity (4), and chemotherapy (2). Treatment involved 6 to 10 transcutaneous treatment electrical stimulation sessions biweekly. Fifty-three percent of patients showed decreases in their tinnitus as measured by a subjective rating scale. With a 3-month follow-up, 72%

Bladder overactivity is a significant health-care problem. Electrical stimulation has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment option. Careful patient selection may improve results obtained with this technique. Further studies are required to determine optimal treatment parameters.

During a period of 27 months, between 1991 and 1993, 15 patients with upper limb lesions caused by electrical hazards were admitted in the Burn Emergency Service of the Hospital das Clinicas-FMUSP. This lesion is usually a dramatic condition and requires a sound physiopathologic knowledge by the surgeon. These accidents may have permanent incapacitating sequelae, and due to long periods of treatment (2 months), social-economic costs are very high. Based on our experience, we suggest a less aggressive approach (no amputation at emergency), and a close continuous surveillance.

We report on a 20 year old male, who developed mature cataract (Electrical Cataract) on both eyes after a severe electric shock from high voltage. Both of his hands and the left foot had to be amputated, because of the severe injury. Although electrical cataract due to high voltage or lightning is rare, they may still occur after industrial or home electric accidents. Even if extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation is successfully performed, the final visual acuity will depend on other ocular damage due to the electric current.

Patients with sensory deficits are especially prone to heating pad burns. Two cases are reported of patients with anesthetic skin who received partial and full-thickness burns of their feet from an electric heating pad. These burn injuries could have been prevented if the patients understood the potential hazard of heating pads.

Cardiac arrest from electrical shock or lightning strike is associated with significant mortality and requires modification and extension of standard advanced life support measures to achieve successful resuscitation. Patients who experience electrical shock or lightning strike may sustain cardiac and respiratory arrest secondary to the direct effects of current. However, the majority of victims have associated multisystem involvement, including neurologic complications, cutaneous burns, and associated blunt trauma. As a result, a combination of advanced cardiac life support measures and advan

Electrical devices can be used for preventing and terminating tachycardia and for achieving hemodynamic improvement during a continuing tachycardia. Conventional approaches to tachycardia prevention include pacing at physiologic rates to prevent brady-cardia-related tachycardia or tachycardias associated with prolonged QT-interval syndromes. More exotic techniques, such as those involving stimulation during the refractory period, are undergoing investigation. Some tachycardias cannot be easily terminated or recur incessantly. Hemodynamics can be improved by pacing methods that result in a narr
