Blockade of electron transport during ischemia preserves bcl-2 and inhibits opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore.

Myocardial ischemia damages the electron transport chain and augments cardiomyocyte death during reperfusion. To understand the relationship between ischemic mitochondrial damage and mitochondrial-driven cell death, the isolated perfused heart underwent global stop-flow ischemia with and without mitochondrial protection by reversible blockade of electron transport. Ischemic damage to electron transport depleted bcl-2 content and favored mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT). Reversible blockade of electron transport preserved bcl-2 content and attenuated calcium-stimulated mitochondrial

5-Aminolevulinic Acid Induced Photodynamic Damage of the Photosynthetic Electron Transport Chain of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Cotyledons.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv Poinsette) plants were sprayed with 20 millimolar 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and then incubated in dark for 14 hours. Upon transfer to sunlight ( approximately 800 watts per square meter) the plants died after 5 hours of exposure due to photosensitization reaction of metalloporphyrins. Due to the photodynamic damage, photosystem II (PSII), photosystem I (PSI), and whole chain reactions were impaired. PSII activity was more susceptible to photodynamic damage than PSI. The variable fluorescence was significantly reduced in ALA-treated plants within 1 hour of expo

Possible functional coupling of hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase to microsomal electron transport system in rat kidney and liver.

Intrarenal distributions of cytosolic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, microsomal hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, NADPH-cytochrome c reductase, mixed-function oxidases and cytochrome P-450, and effects of phenobarbital, methylcholanthrene, fasting, castration and sex hormones on the hepatic and renal enzyme activities were examined in an attempt to elucidate the as yet unknown function of hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The results show that there is a similarity between hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase with respect to the intrarenal distribution and the

Studies on the microsomal electron-transport system of anaerobically grown yeast. III. Spectral characterization of cytochrome P-450.

A carbon monoxide-binding pigment which shows an absorption peak at about 450 nm in the reduced carbon monoxide difference spectrum was purified from the microsomal fraction of yeast grown anaerobically. The spectral characteristics of the pigment were practically identical with those of cytochrome P-450 of hepatic microsomes, especially from polycyclic hydrocarbon-induced animals. The pigment was denatured to P-420, and bound with ethyl isocyanide in the reduced state. Although Type I spectral change was not evident, the pigment showed Type II and modified Type II spectral changes upon bindin

Synthesis and Electron-Transporting Properties of N-Type Polymers with Cardanol-Based Side Chains.

We synthesized n-type polymers poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} [P(NDI2OD-T2)] and poly{[N,N'-bis(3-(4-cardanol)propyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic diimide]-alt-[5,5'-bis(2-thienyl)-2,2'-bithiophene]} [P(NDICL-T2)] with cardanol-based side chains via Stille coupling to enhance electron mobility. Replacing the 2-octyldodecyl side chain with cardanol in P(NDICL-T2) improved electron mobility due to increased chain flexibility and ordered packing. Cooperative supramolecular polymerization of a perylene diimide derivative and its impact on electron-transporting properties.

H-bonding-promoted supramolecular polymerization of a perylene diimide (PDI) building block and its impact on charge carrier mobility were studied. PDI-1, containing a carboxylic acid group, exhibits H-aggregation in a non-polar solvent decalin while in THF or chloroform it remains in the monomeric form. In contrast, the control molecule PDI-2, containing an ester group does not show aggregation even in decalin, indicating that H-bonding among the carboxylic acid is primarily responsible for H-aggregation, which is further verified by the FT-IR study. A variable temperature UV/Vis study establ

Effects of TIPS-functionalization and perhalogenation on the electronic, optical, and transport properties of angular and compact dibenzochrysene.

We report a systematic comparative study on dibenzo[b,def]chrysene (angular) and dibenzo[def, mno] chrysene (compact) polyaromatic hydrocarbons and their bis-triisopropylsilylethynyl (TIPS)-functionalized and perhalogenated (F, Cl) counterparts. We used density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT to quantify the effects of morphology and chemical modifications on the electronic, optical, and transport properties. In particular, we compared electron affinity, ionization energy, fundamental gap, optical absorption, exciton binding energy, and reorganization energies for holes and elect

Electron transport components of the MnO2 reductase system and the location of the terminal reductase in a marine Bacillus.

The response of MnO2 reduction by uninduced and induced whole cells and cell extracts of Bacillus 29 to several electron transport inhibitors was compared. MnO2 reduction with glucose by uninduced whole cells and cell extracts was strongly inhibited at 0.1 mM dicumarol, 100 mM azide, and 8 mM cyanide but not by atebrine or carbon monoxide, suggesting the involvement of a vitamin K--type quinone and a metalloenzyme in the electron transport chain. MnO2 reduction with ferrocyanide by uninduced cell extracts was inhibited by 5 mM cyanide and 100 mM azide but not by atebrine, dicumarol, or carbon

Comprehensive Analysis for Low-Cost and Highly Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells Using SCAPS-1D with an Inexpensive Hole Transport Material, Electron Transport Material, and Back Contact Considering the Toxicity.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are rapidly advancing due to their high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and low fabrication costs. However, their commercialization is hindered by lead toxicity and the use of expensive materials, such as Spiro-OMeTAD and gold electrodes. This study presents a comprehensive SCAPS-1D simulation-based analysis of 14 perovskite absorber materials, spanning both Pb-based and lead-free compounds, under a unified device architecture using low-cost, nontoxic components: ZnO as the electron transport material (ETM), PEDOT:PSS + WO3 as a dual hole transport material,

Investigation of Sr-doped ZnO electron transport layers for perovskite solar cells: a combined DFT and SCAPS-1D study.

This study investigates strontium (Sr)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) as an electron transport layer (ETL) for lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) through a combined density functional theory (DFT) and SCAPS-1D simulation approach. The opto-electronics properties of pristine and Sr-doped ZnO were analysed using the mGGA functional implemented in CASTEP. The results revealed that Sr doping tunes the electronic structures of ZnO by reducing the band gap from 3.37 eV to 2.91 eV, while improving carrier mobility and optical absorption. Density of states (DOS) analysis confirmed that Sr doping enhances

Performance Optimization of Lead-Free Cs2AgBiI6 Solar Cells with the LBSO Electron Transport Layer: A SCAPS-1D Simulation Study.

Lead toxicity in conventional halide perovskites has long been a concern for practical photovoltaic deployment, and Cs2AgBiI6 double perovskites gained significant attention as promising lead-free alternatives due to their high carrier mobility, suitable optoelectronic characteristics, and relatively good chemical stability. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the electronic properties of the Cs2AgBiI6 absorber, while SCAPS-1D simulations were independently employed to optimize the photovoltaic performance of the proposed device architecture

Immunohistochemical Markers of Mitochondrial Electron Transport Chain Instability in Human Brain Regions: A Study of Aging and Alzheimer's Disease.

Expanding research indicates that oxidative stress, particularly mitochondrial oxidative stress, is one of the key components in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mitochondrial oxidative stress is largely driven by impaired function of electron transport chain (ETC) complexes and their regulators. This study conducted an immunohistochemical analysis of ETC proteins (α-subunit of complex V, subunits MTCO1 and MTCO2 of complex IV) and mitochondrial complex V inhibitor IF-1 in the neurons of the caudate nucleus head, hippocampus, anterior cingulate gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, and inf

Graphene oxide-encapsulated OV-Co3O4 for efficient nanoconfinement peroxymonosulfate activation: Simultaneously regulate mass transport, electron transfer and transformation behavior.

Thiamethoxam (THM), a widely detected neonicotinoid insecticide, poses potential ecological risks in aquatic environments, making its efficient oxidation and transformation product control important. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have been widely applied for the removal of refractory contaminants, but their performance is often constrained by nonselective radical reactions, inefficient electron transfer, and sluggish mass transport. Herein, a nanoconfined graphene oxide-encapsulated oxygen-vacancy-rich Co3O4 catalyst (OV-Co3O4@GO) was rationally constructed to addr

Too Fast for Spin Flipping: Absence of Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity in Coherent Electron Transport through Single-Molecule Junctions.

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), which refers to the ability of chiral molecules to preferentially select spins during electron transfer, has attracted great attention during the past two decades. However, the theoretical and experimental understanding of the CISS effect remains preliminary. In this study, we demonstrate that there is no distinguishable CISS effect in the case of coherent electron transport through single chiral molecular junctions for a set of four molecule studied here. Our conclusion is based on statistical evaluations of thousands of single-molecule junctions acr

Engineering Magnesium Oxide as a Mitochondrial Electron Transport Chain Inhibitor for Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive subtype with limited therapeutic options due to its resistance to conventional targeted therapies. TNBC cells heavily rely on oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), making mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) inhibition a promising therapeutic approach. However, existing ETC inhibitors pose severe cytotoxicity risks, highlighting the need for biocompatible alternatives. In this study, we develop an MgO-ICG suspension (MgO-ICG@S), utilizing magnesium oxide (MgO), biocompatible pharmaceutical excipients that are already in widespre

Sub-optimal temperature leads to tighter coupling between photosynthetic electron transport and CO2 assimilation under fluctuating light in maize.

The C4 carbon concentrating pathway promotes high CO2 assimilation rates. To keep C4 photosynthesis energetically efficient, electron transport reactions and downstream biochemistry need to be carefully balanced. Here we use a combination of noninvasive measurements and metabolic profiling to study the efficiency of C4 photosynthesis in maize (Zea mays) under 2 conditions that can lead to decoupling between electron transport and carbon assimilation: fluctuating light and suboptimal temperature. Measurements were performed under 3 fluctuating light regimes and at 3 temperatures, providing the

Enhancement of soil DOC and electron transport by biochar strengthens Cd immobilization via iron oxides transformations in waterlogged soils.

Cadmium (Cd) is typically influenced by soil iron oxides. Soil initial characteristics and biochar applications strongly influence iron transformation and Cd immobilization. In this experiment, 12 different Cd-contaminated paddy soils were subjected to anaerobic incubation with CK (control) and BC (2 % biochar). The results demonstrated that soil pH and Eh are crucial factors affecting Cd immobilization. Fe(II) concentration peaked on the 10th day and then decreased, and amorphous iron oxides (Feo) gradually increased. Compared to CK, biochar increased Fe(II) by 27.29 % on 10th day and Feo by

Microbial self-regulation and electron transport reconstruction under Cr(VI)-4-CP stress: From synergistic inhibition to antagonistic interaction.

Understanding how microbial communities adapt to multi-pollutant stress is crucial for efficient denitrification. Although previous studies reported the effects of heavy metals and phenolic compounds individually or in mixtures, the deep mechanisms by which combined stressors reshape microbial electron transport and community structure remain unclear. This study explored the denitrification response to combined Cr(VI) and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) stress, revealing a temporal shift from synergistic inhibition (acute exposure) to antagonistic interaction (long-term adaptation). Acute Cr(VI)-4-CP ex

Self-assembled molecular network with waterwheel-like architecture: experimental and theoretical evaluation toward electron transport capabilities for optoelectronic devices.

In recent times, self-assembled electron transport materials for optoelectronic devices, both solar cells and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), have been gaining much interest as they help in fabricating high-efficiency devices. However, designing organic small molecular materials with star-shaped self-assembled networks is a challenge. To achieve this sort of target, we chose triazine and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbonyl cores for developing such architecture, and we developed four molecular systems, vizTCpCN, TCmCN, TmCN, and TpCN. Successful isolation of single crystals followed by structural
