Therapist-assisted, Internet-based treatment for panic disorder: can general practitioners achieve comparable patient outcomes to psychologists?

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is an escalating concern worldwide. The management of disorders such as anxiety and depression largely falls to family doctors or general practitioners (GPs). However, GPs are often too time constrained and may lack the necessary training to adequately manage the needs of such patients. Evidence-based Internet interventions represent a potentially valuable resource to reduce the burden of care and the cost of managing mental health disorders within primary care settings and, at the same time, improve patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to extend th

Recruitment to a large scale randomised controlled clinical trial in primary care: the Helicobacter Eradication Aspirin Trial (HEAT).

BACKGROUND: The Helicobacter Eradication Aspirin Trial (HEAT) is a multicentre, double blind, randomised controlled trial investigating whether Helicobacter (H.) pylori eradication reduces hospitalisation for peptic ulcer bleeding. Recruited participants were aged 60 and over and taking aspirin (≤325 mg daily) for at least four months prior to consent. Based on results of a pilot study, a sample size calculation predicted 6600 H. pylori-positive randomised participants would be required, from 33,000 volunteers, recruited from 170,000 invited patients. Methodology was therefore designed for rec

Factors associated with high compliance behaviour against COVID-19 in the early phase of pandemic: a cross-sectional study in 12 Asian countries.

INTRODUCTION: Regardless of having effective vaccines against COVID-19, containment measures such as enhanced physical distancing and good practice of personal hygiene remain the mainstay of controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. Countries across Asia have imposed these containment measures to varying extents. However, residents in different countries would have a differing degree of compliance to these containment measures potentially due to differences in the level of awareness and motivation in the early phase of pandemic. OBJECTIVES: In our study, we aimed to describe and correlate the level

BACKGROUND: This article presents an evaluation of inSPOTLA.org, a sexually transmitted disease partner notification Web site in Los Angeles County primarily targeting men who have sex with men (MSM). Since its launch in 2005, this Web site has received more than 400,000 visitors and resulted in nearly 50,000 e-mail postcards sent. However, there have been limited quantitative data concerning use of the service for actual partner notification. This study investigated awareness and use of inSPOTLA among MSM, as well as the effect of an advertising campaign. METHODS: Data from 2 cross-sectional

The results of a national survey regarding nutritional care of obese burn patients.

Little is known about the nutritional needs of obese burn patients. Given the impact of obesity on the morbidity and mortality of these patients, a uniform understanding of perceptions and practices is needed. To elucidate current practices of clinicians working with the obese burn population, the authors constructed a multidisciplinary survey designed to collect this information from practitioners in United States burn centers. An electronic approach was implemented to allow for ease of distribution and completion. A portable document format (pdf) letter was e-mailed to the members of the Ame

Electronic distractions of the respiratory therapist and their impact on patient safety.

Over the last decade, data from the lay press, government agencies, and the business world have identified ever-growing problems with electronic distraction and changes in human relationships in this electronically interconnected planet. As health professionals, we are well aware of the epidemic growth of injuries and deaths related to texting and driving. It should not surprise us that this distracted behavior has affected all levels of health-care providers and has impacted patient care. This advent of “distracted doctoring” was first coined by the Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent Matt R

Patient experiences and discomfort associated with mid-palatal temporary skeletal anchorage devices.

BACKGROUND: Mid-palatal placement of temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) has become increasingly popular among clinicians due to high success rates, low associated risk and streamlining and enhanced customization of associated supra-structures. There is however limited patient data in relation to associated experiences and impacts. METHODS: A survey of patients undergoing mid-palatal TSAD insertion was undertaken using a 27-item bespoke questionnaire. Questionnaires were sent using both electronic and surface mail with a 3-month period allowed for response. Pain experience; the use o

Approach to Janus kinase inhibition for juvenile dermatomyositis among CARRA and PReS providers.

OBJECTIVES: Janus kinase inhibition (JAKi) has been proposed as a treatment for idiopathic inflammatory myopathies to target increased interferon signalling. Predominantly retrospective reports have demonstrated effectiveness of JAKi in refractory JDM. However, JAKi remains an off-label treatment for JDM and there may be variation in use worldwide. An international survey was conducted to investigate approaches to JAKi for JDM. METHODS: The Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) JDM Therapeutics workgroup and core members of the Paediatric Rheumatology European Society
