Case Report: A family of fluctuating cystoid macular edema caused by MYO7A gene mutations.

Cystoid macular edema (CME) is a common complication in various retinal disorders, often leading to significant central vision impairment. However, the underlying genetic causes and detailed clinical features in patients with fluctuating CME remain unclear. This retrospective, observational case series analyzed two patients from a single family with fluctuating CME, focusing on both clinical and genetic aspects. Data were collected and analyzed from September 2022 to January 2023 at a single center. Comprehensive ocular examinations, including best-corrected visual acuity tests, color fundus p

Experimentally induced rhythmic jaw muscle activities during non-rapid eye movement sleep in freely moving guinea pigs.

Rhythmic jaw muscle activities frequently occur during non-rapid eye movement sleep in patients with sleep bruxism. The present study aimed to investigate the response characteristics of the masticatory rhythm generation during non-rapid eye movement sleep in animals. Eleven guinea pigs were surgically prepared for polygraphic recordings by electromyography, electrooculography, electroencephalography and electrocardiography with the implantation of a stimulating electrode. Repetitive electrical microstimulations at three intensities were applied to the corticobulbar tract under freely moving c

Comparison between Scalp EEG and Behind-the-Ear EEG for Development of a Wearable Seizure Detection System for Patients with Focal Epilepsy.

A wearable electroencephalogram (EEG) device for continuous monitoring of patients suffering from epilepsy would provide valuable information for the management of the disease. Currently no EEG setup is small and unobtrusive enough to be used in daily life. Recording behind the ear could prove to be a solution to a wearable EEG setup. This article examines the feasibility of recording epileptic EEG from behind the ear. It is achieved by comparison with scalp EEG recordings. Traditional scalp EEG and behind-the-ear EEG were simultaneously acquired from 12 patients with temporal, parietal, or oc

[Downbeat nystagmus during eye closure].

We studied eye movements and clinical findings in 1225 patients with complaints of dizziness. Downbeat nystagmus was demonstrated in 11 patients during eye closure. Simultaneous vertical and horizontal eye recordings were examined to demonstrate vertical eye position during eye closure. Downbeat nystagmus appeared on midline position even during eye closure in six patients. An electrooculography was demonstrated in three out of above six patients. A 24-year-old woman (Case 1) complained of a single spell of vertigo. There was no remarkable finding on neurological examination. An audiogram was

MAF-SleepNet: A Multimodal Attention-Enhanced Fusion Network for Automatic Multi-Class Sleep Disorder Classification from Polysomnography.

Background/Objectives: Sleep disorders are heterogeneous conditions with diverse neural, muscular, and ocular manifestations, making polysomnography (PSG) the gold standard for accurate diagnosis. Artificial intelligence-based approaches, particularly deep learning (DL) models capable of integrating heterogeneous information, offer a promising solution for reliable decision-making in such clinical scenarios. However, most existing DL studies have focused on a single disorder, relied on limited datasets, or employed epoch-level labeling strategies that overlook the episodic nature of sleep path

DyslexiaNet: Examining the Viability and Efficacy of Eye Movement-Based Deep Learning for Dyslexia Detection.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs reading, affecting 5-17.5% of children and representing the most common learning disability. Individuals with dyslexia experience decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension difficulties, hindering vocabulary development and learning. Early and accurate identification is essential for targeted interventions. Traditional diagnostic methods rely on behavioral assessments and neuropsychological tests, which can be time-consuming and subjective. Recent studies suggest that physiological signals, such as electrooculography (EOG), can provide o

A Brain-Controlled Quadruped Robot: A Proof-of-Concept Demonstration.

Coupling brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and robotic systems in the future can enable seamless personal assistant systems in everyday life, with the requests that can be performed in a discrete manner, using one's brain activity only. These types of systems might be of a particular interest for people with locked-in syndrome (LIS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) because they can benefit from communicating with robotic assistants using brain sensing interfaces. In this proof-of-concept work, we explored how a wireless and wearable BCI device can control a quadruped robot-Boston Dynamics

Differential diagnosis of apneas in preterm infants.

Clinically relevant apneas, which are common in preterm infants, may adversely affect later neuropsychological condition in this group of patients. Pharmacotherapy to stimulate respiratory functions may be unsuccessful. Polygraphic recording may help in the differential diagnosis of these clinically relevant events. Twenty-nine preterm neonates born before 36 weeks of gestational age were examined using polygraphic recording (respiration--two channels, perioral electromyography, oxygen saturation, heart rate, electroencephalography, electrocardiography, electrooculography). The examination was

Familial congenital oculomotor apraxia: clinical and electro-oculographic features.

The electro-oculographic (EOG) features of both horizontal and vertical eye movements in congenital oculomotor apraxia (COMA) were not previously reported. A girl referred to the ophthalmologic department for abnormal eye movements was diagnosed as COMA. The same abnormal ocular movements were observed in her younger sister and her father who was unaware of his difficulties to initiate voluntary saccades. When performed, EOG recordings of all horizontal and vertical saccadic eye movements were severely altered whatever the age of the patient. Pursuit was normal for these patients. It confirms

Clinical and technologic approaches to sleep evaluation.

This article discusses normal human sleep. Discoveries leading to an understanding of human sleep, electroencephalographic definitions, and general characteristics of normal human sleep are presented. Actuarial data for a first laboratory night are provided. Finally, the mechanisms governing sleep and wakefulness are reviewed and a model of normal sleep mechanisms going awry is outlined as an aid for understanding abnormal sleep associated with sleep disorders.

Speech perception deficit in dyslexic adults as measured by mismatch negativity (MMN).

Deficits in phonological processing are known to play a major role in the aetiology of dyslexia, and speech perception is a prerequisite condition for phonological processing. Significant group differences between dyslexics and controls have been found in the categorical perception of synthetic speech stimuli. In a previous work, we have demonstrated that these group differences are already present at an early pre-attentive stage of signal processing in dyslexic children: the late component of the MMN elicited by passive speech perception was attenuated in comparison to a control group. In thi

Spectral features of EEG alpha activity in human REM sleep: two variants with different functional roles?

Evidence suggests that an important contribution of spectral power in the alpha range is characteristic of human REM sleep. This contribution is, in part, due to the appearance of well-defined bursts of alpha activity not associated with arousals during both tonic and phasic REM fragments. The present study aims at determining if the REM-alpha bursts constitute a different alpha variant from the REM background alpha activity. Since previous findings showed a selective suppression of background alpha activity over occipital regions during phasic REM fragments and, on the other hand, the density

[Sleep apnea syndromes in multiple system atrophy].

Multiple-system atrophy (MSA) is characterized by progressive autonomic failure with cerebellar, pyramidal and extrapyramidal signs. In MSA patients laryngoscopy often reveals unilateral or bilateral abductor vocal fold palsies. Snoring is very common. However, assessment of sites of obstruction and their severity is needed. We report our clinical experience in managing a 56-year-old, obese male MSA patient (1.76 m height, 100 kg weight, BMI 32.3 kg/m2) who was admitted for evaluation of snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. Endoscopy while awake demonstrated an incomplete abductor vocal f

Vestibulo-oculomotor disturbances in trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.

Patients with hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia later treated with microvascular decompression and surgical interposition for their vascular loop disturbance were investigated preoperatively with electronystagmography, saccade test and audiometry. Some of them underwent an extended investigation including computerized broad-frequency rotatory test with visual suppression and a computerized smooth pursuit test, both tests using sinusoidal as well as randomized movement patterns as stimulus. The patients showed a high frequency of vestibulo-oculomotor disturbances indicating that the vas

Narcolepsy in a Brahman bull.

Behavioral, electrophysiologic, and pharmacologic tests were performed on a 2 1/2-year-old Brahman bull suspected of having narcolepsy. Placement on a tilt table or electroejaculation induced apparent sleep and cataplexy. Electrophysiologic recordings during the episodes revealed the low-voltage, high-frequency electroencephalogram, reduced electromyogram amplitude, and rapid eye movements in the electrooculogram associated with rapid eye movements sleep. Physostigmine salicylate appeared to elicit and potentiate the episodes, whereas atropine sulfate and imipramine reduced or blocked them. Th

[Readjustment of anticonvulsive therapy in children. Monitoring of the effects of sodium valproate after barbiturate withdrawal by electrophysiologic sleep studies].

The effectiveness of valproic acid (V.P.A.) in the symptomatic treatment of child's seizures is well established. Its lack of side-effects detrimental to the child's development and, on the contrary, its often positive action on awareness and attention should lead to choose V.P.A. as the first and main therapy. All night sleep recordings have been largely used to study the consequences of drug intake and drug withdrawal. It seemed interesting a) to control the effects of V.P.A. on sleep parameters when it was given as first treatment and b) to compare its effects to those of barbiturates when

[Some problems in electroperimetric investigation by means of visual evoked cortical potentials (author's transl)].

The authors discuss problems of localized retinal stimulation including the influence of stray light in cases of electroperimetry by means of VECP. The present study shows that we can successfully perform electroperimetric investigation under certain conditions. This is confirmed by investigation of visual field defects in a case of Arachnitis optico chiasmatica.

Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa sine pigmento.

A patient presented with unilateral findings of night blindness shown by impaired rod function and dark adaptation, constricted visual fields with good central acuity, a barely recordable electro-retinographic b-wave, and a unilaterally impaired electro-oculogram. There were none of the pigmentary changes usually associated with retinitis pigmentosa. The unaffected right eye was normal in all respects. Therefore the case is most probably one of unilateral retinitis pigmentosa sine pigmento.
