OBJECTIVE: Patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) who undergo ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement often belong to an older demographic, putting them at increased risk of postoperative delirium and related complications. Recent literature documenting the use of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in various disciplines of surgery has shown improved clinical outcomes, faster discharge, and lower readmission rates. Early return to a familiar environment (i.e., discharged home) is a well-known predictor of reduced postoperative delirium. However, ERAS pro

Background Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are nowadays considered the standard of care for various elective surgical procedures. However, its utilization remains low in tier-two and tier-three cities of India, and there exists a significant variation in the practice. In the present study, we have investigated the safety and feasibility of these protocols or pathways in emergency surgery for perforated duodenal ulcer disease. Methods A total of 41 patients with perforated duodenal ulcers were randomly divided into two groups. All the patients across the study were treated surg

To explore the clinical effects of total laparoscopic radical gastrectomy under the guidance of the concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). Fifty-five patients were perioperatively treated under the concept of ERAS (ERAS group), while the remaining 55 patients were treated under the traditional perioperative concept (control group). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, the time of first anal exhaust and first postoperative off-bed activity, postoperative length of stay, and incidence of postoperative complications were recorded in both groups. The pain of patients was asse

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Methadone may offer advantages in facilitating early extubation after cardiac surgery, but very few data are available in the pediatric population.
SETTING/DESIGN: Community tertiary children's hospital, retrospective case series.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all pediatric cardiac surgical patients for whom early extubation was intended. A multimodal analgesic regimen was used for all patients, consisting of methadone (0.2-0.3 mg/kg), ketamine (0.5 mg/kg plus 0.25 mg/kg/h), lidocaine (1 mg/kg plus 1.5 mg/kg/h), acetaminophen (15 mg/kg), and

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery pathways provide a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to the care of surgical patients. They have been shown to decrease postoperative length of stay and cost in several surgical subspecialties, including gynecology, but have not been well-studied in obstetric patients who undergo cesarean delivery.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether the implementation of an enhanced recovery after surgery pathway for cesarean delivery would decrease postoperative length of stay and postoperative direct cost compared with historic controls.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has been shown to improve outcomes for patients following gastrointestinal surgery. Data on protocol adherence and how this impacts on outcome are limited. This study examines how protocol adherence changes over time and determines how this impacts on outcome across a large-volume gastrointestinal surgical service.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective review of patients eligible for colorectal, liver and oesophagogastric ERAS over two 3-month periods in 2010 and 2011 was performed. End points included: length of stay (LOS), overall p

There is paucity of data on Enhanced Recovery After Bariatric Surgery (ERABS) protocols. This feasibility study reports outcomes of this protocol utilized within a tertiary-referral bariatric centre. Data on consecutive primary procedures (laparoscopic gastric bypasses, sleeve gastrectomies and gastric bands) performed over 9 months within an ERABS protocol were prospectively recorded. Interventions utilized included shortened preoperative fasts, intra-operative humidification, early mobilization and feeding, avoidance of fluid overload, incentive spirometry, use of prokinetics and laxatives.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways represent a multimodal approach to improve the quality of postoperative care by diminishing the stress response to the trauma of an operation, thereby minimizing hospital length of stay and potentially complications. At a time when healthcare costs are being intensely scrutinized, efforts to reduce patient morbidity and hospital stay are imperative and timely. The success of ERAS fast-track surgery pathways-thoroughly studied in the colorectal literature-has led to their application in other fields. Herein, we present our ERAS pathway for patient

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer-related morbidity and mortality rates are high in China. Patients who have undergone gastric cancer surgery should receive six cycles of chemotherapy according to their condition. During this period, intestinal obstruction is likely to occur. Electrolyte balance disorders, peritonitis, intestinal necrosis, and even hypovolemic shock and septic shock can seriously affect the physical and mental recovery of patients and threaten their health and quality of life (QoL).
AIM: To quantitatively explore the effects of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)-based nursing on

PURPOSE: The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway is an evidence-based perioperative pathway that results in less pain, earlier recovery, and lower complication rates. Studies to prove their efficacy over standard recovery pathways in the Indian population are scarce. Our study intends to compare the outcomes of these pathways in the Indian community focusing on hospital stay, postoperative pain, and time for rescue analgesia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a single-blinded RCT involving 112 patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The groups were divided into E
