The purpose of this study was to ascertain the status and patterns of pinworm Enterobius vermicularis infection among preschool children in Jeollanam-do from 2023 to 2025. Further, it aimed to assess changes in infection rates during the implementation of the test-and-treatment strategy. Cellophane tape swabs were collected from 12,608 children aged 0-6 years enrolled in daycare or kindergarten facilities in 8 cities and counties of Jeollanam-do. The samples were examined under a light microscope to diagnose pinworm infection. The overall infection rate over the 3-year period was 0.22% (28/12,

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is recognized as the second most common human nematode, primarily inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract and mostly affecting children. However, ectopic infections (where the parasite migrates to the extra intestinal sites) although rare, have been increasingly reported and pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical clinical presentations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guideline was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant articles published from 1972 to July 2025. Forty articles rep

Enterobius vermicularis typically affects children, while Helicobacter pylori is associated with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Reports of E. vermicularis infection in geriatric patients are exceedingly rare, and recovery of the adult worm in stool specimens is unusual. We describe an 82-year-old male on long-term corticosteroids who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms. Stool microscopy demonstrated E. vermicularis, and H. pylori infection was confirmed by rapid urease test, PCR, and histopathology. The patient responded to Albendazole and standard H. pylori eradication thera

Background: The role of Enterobius vermicularis infestation in the context of appendicitis is largely overlooked, but Enterobius vermicularis is considered an unexpected and significant appendicectomy finding. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of Enterobius vermicularis findings in appendectomies and to evaluate the clinical and histopathologic features of patients with Enterobius vermicularis-associated acute appendicitis and those with appendiceal Enterobius vermicularis infestation. Methods: The medical records of all children who underwent an appendectomy in two large

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis (E. vermicularis) is a nematode that infects up to 200 million people worldwide, despite effective medications being available. Conventional diagnostic tests are hindered by low sensitivity and poor patient compliance. Furthermore, no biomolecular techniques are available for clinical application. The aim of this study was to develop a procedure specifically designed for clinical application to detect E. vermicularis by means of PCR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two subject groups were taken into account: a group of 27 infected patients and a control group of 27

Enterobius vermicularis (pin worm) is a common intestinal parasite infection which usually affects children and rarely causes significant illness. However, of the few reports of extra-intestinal E. vermicularis infection reported in the literature, patients can have significant morbidity and mortality, thus stressing the need for appropriate management of pin worm infection. We report a case of massive E. vermicularis infection in a 20-year-old male which was inadvertently discovered during an emergency abdominal surgery. The case emphasizes the need to perform routine ova-parasite screening a

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is the most common helminthic infection in the world. This small parasite is predominant in the pediatric population. The presence of EV in the appendix can cause or mimick appendicitis. The aim of our study was to compare patients with EV infection and those without EV infection, and to identify predictive factors that may help the diagnosis of EV infection in patients presenting with right iliac fossa pain and avoid negative appendectomy.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all the appendices removed between January 2012 and December 2016 was conduc

BACKGROUND: Histological acute appendicitis patterns associated with Enterobius vermicularis is an extremely rare finding. The exact role of this parasite in acute appendicitis is controversial as usually resected specimens show no evidence of histological inflammation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present herein a case of a 21-year-old male Arabic patient who presented with clinical syndrome of acute appendicitis. Emergency appendectomy was performed and the histopathological examination of the resected specimen showed the presence of E. vermicularis as well as intense acute inflammatory patterns s

We genetically characterized pinworms obtained from 37 children from different regions of Germany and established new species-specific molecular diagnostic tools. No ribosomal DNA diversity was found; the phylogenetic position of Enterobius vermicularis within the Oxyurida order and its close relationship to the Ascaridida and Spirurida orders was confirmed.

The prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection among preschool children was reported to be low based on a 5-year screening program in Taipei City, Taiwan. The Taipei City government intended to terminate the E. vermicularis screening program among preschool children. Thus, we were entrusted with confirming whether pinworm infections among preschool children in Taipei City had truly declined. From each of 12 administrative districts 2-3 kindergartens were randomly selected for investigation. In total, 4,349 children were examined, of which 2,537 were boys and 1,812 were girls. The cellopha

Enterobius vermicularis is the most common human intestinal parasite, and its control among school children is an important public health issue. The objective of this study was to document the present situation of E. vermicularis infection in school children in Hualien. The administrative divisions in Hualien county include 13 districts (3 in a mountainous area, 10 in a rural/urban area). Between 2007 and 2012, a total of 41,191 children in 13 districts in Hualien were examined using consecutive 2-day adhesive cellophane paper perianal swabs. Our results showed Enterobius egg-positive infectio

Pinworm infection remains prevalent in children in many parts of the world. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of this infection in schoolchildren in Taiwan after the termination of the 15-year population-based control project in 2001. Our results showed that 2.4% of 118 190 children in 385 primary schools were found to have enterobiasis by two-consecutive-day adhesive cellophane perianal swabs. The prevalences were significantly different in the 25 counties/cities surveyed (0.6-6.6%). A significantly higher prevalence was found in boys (2.6%) than in girls (2.2%) and the prev

In two new attempts to infect human subjects with pin-worms that were infested, at that time, with protozoa Dientamoeba fragilis, presence of these protoza in the intestinal canal was observed in one case for more than 84 days, and in another case for more than 31 days after contamination. The duration of latent periods fixed for Enterobius vermicularis was almost identical (51 and 50 days). New attempts implement and confirm the results of the first successful attempts to transfer the infection (Ockert, 1972b) as well as the hypothesis of the epidemiological interrelation between both parasit

Enterobius vermicularis is one of the most common intestinal nematode worldwide. Enterobius rarely causes a symptomatic disease. We report here an unusual case of a 60-year old man who came with a polypoidal growth in the anal canal increasing in size for past 20 years. He had pain and intense itching over the mass. The differential diagnosis of squamous papilloma, fibroma and foreign body granuloma were considered. The mass lesion was excised surgically and sent to the pathology laboratory. The mass turned out to be an "E. vermicularis worm granuloma" by histopathologic examination. Thus, tim
