Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) is a significant zoonotic pathogen, primarily causing opportunistic infections in humans while often existing as a commensal in animal reservoirs, facilitating its dissemination. Current understanding of the resistance profiles, virulence mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions of E. faecalis from ruminants, particularly unique species such as the plateau yak, remains limited. This knowledge gap hinders the accurate assessment of their transmission risk and the development of effective control strategies. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of a

OBJECTIVES: The high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a threat to the global public health. The appropriate use of adjuvants to restore the antimicrobial activity of antibiotics against resistant bacteria could be an effective strategy for combating antibiotic resistance. In this study, we investigated the counteraction of Triton X-100 (TX-100) and the mechanisms underlying the antibiotic resistance of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis).
METHODS: Standard, wild-type (WT), and induced antibiotic-resistant E. faecalis strains were used in this study. In vitro antibacterial exp

Enrofloxacin is a broad-spectrum synthetic antimicrobial drug widely used in veterinary medicine. The present study aimed to determine the effective enrofloxacin dose for treating Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis infection in Oreochromis niloticus. P. aeruginosa and E. faecalis isolates were verified using selective differential media and biochemically using the Vitek 2 test. Bacterial isolates were virulent for O. niloticus with LD50 equal to 2.03 × 106 and 2.22 × 107 CFU fish-1 for P. aeruginosa and E. faecalis, respectively. Infected fish suffered from decreased feed intake

Enterococcus faecalis is a commensal bacterium commonly found in the human gastrointestinal tract. However, in individuals with compromised immune systems, the pathogen can lead to severe illness. This opportunistic pathogen is associated with secondary apical diseases and is adept at resisting antibiotics and other forms of treatment because of its numerous virulence factors. Enterococcus faecalis is capable of disrupting the normal functions of immune cells, thereby hindering the body's ability to eradicate the infection. However, intensive research is needed in further understanding the adv

Antibiotic resistance critically limits treatment options for infection caused by opportunistic pathogens such as enterococci. Here, we investigate the antibiotic and immunological activity of the anticancer agent mitoxantrone (MTX) in vitro and in vivo against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE). We show that, in vitro, MTX is a potent antibiotic against Gram-positive bacteria through induction of reactive oxygen species and DNA damage. MTX also synergizes with vancomycin against VRE, rendering the resistant strains more permeable to MTX. In a murine wound infection model, single

OBJECTIVES: Enterococcus faecalis can adopt both a commensal and a nosocomial lifestyle, resisting numerous antibiotics. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between the cell wall (CW) thickness and decreased susceptibility to vancomycin (VD) in van-gene negative clinical isolates of E. faecalis (nMIC 8 = 2, nMIC 4 = 3, ST30, ST40, and ST59).
METHODS: The CW thickness was assessed in VD strains and compared with vancomycin susceptible isolates of the same sequence type (ST) (Vancomycin susceptible [VS]; nMIC 2 = 5). The VD and VS strains were subjected to serial passage (evol

PURPOSE: In all patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) and Enterococcus faecalis bacteremia (EfsB), endocarditis (IE) and CIED infection should be suspected. Guidelines recommend extraction of the CIED when CIED infection or IE is diagnosed. Whether extraction of the CIED should be done in other situations with EfsB is not known. We aimed to describe the management and outcome of patients with CIED and monomicrobial EfsB, in relation to extraction and recurrent EfsB.
METHODS: A population-based cohort of patients with monomicrobial EfsB from January 2014 to November 2020

Although chloramphenicol is currently banned from use in livestock, other phenicols, such as florfenicol and thiamphenicol, have been used for the treatment of bacterial infections in domestic cattle in Korea. This study compares the characteristics of chloramphenicol-resistant Enterococcus faecalis isolated from the bulk tank milk of four major dairy companies in Korea. Although the distribution of multidrug resistance patterns showed no significant differences between the four companies, 85 chloramphenicol-resistant Enterococcus faecalis isolates showed a significantly high number of resista

Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive commensal bacterium native to the gastrointestinal tract and an opportunistic pathogen of increasing clinical concern. E. faecalis also colonizes the female reproductive tract, and reports suggest vaginal colonization increases following antibiotic treatment or in patients with aerobic vaginitis. Currently, little is known about specific factors that promote E. faecalis vaginal colonization and subsequent infection. We modified an established mouse vaginal colonization model to explore E. faecalis vaginal carriage and demonstrate that both vancomycin-re

Enterococcus faecalis is an opportunistic pathogen that causes illnesses ranging from urinary tract infections to sepsis in humans and animals. However, the overuse of antibiotics has increased rates of drug resistance among E. faecalis isolates. Bacteriophages and their derivatives have recently been identified as good candidates for the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections. Here, we isolated a virulent E. faecalis phage, PHB08, using the double-layer plate method. The bioactivity of the phage was determined via one-step growth curve testing and bacterial killing assays, and whole

The purpose of this study was to identify the genetic environment of optrA gene in linezolid (LZD)-resistant Enterococcus faecalis from chicken meat and to describe the probable mechanism of dissemination of the optrA gene through plasmid or chromosomal integration. Whole genome sequencing and analysis revealed that all 3 E. faecalis isolates confirmed as LZD- and chloramphenicol-resistant carried fexA adjacent to the optrA gene as well as a variety of resistance genes for macrolides, tetracyclines, and aminoglycosides, simultaneously. But, the other genes conferring LZD resistance, cfr and po

A 71-year-old man with mitral regurgitation and apical cardiomyopathy underwent endoscopic mucosal resection of a 22-mm transverse colon tubulovillous adenoma with high-grade dysplasia. Six weeks later, he presented with fever, valvular vegetations, and positive blood cultures for Enterococcus faecalis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of endocarditis involving native heart valves after endoscopic mucosal resection.

INTRODUCTION: Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), a constituent of the gut microbiota, can be associated with both colonic lesions and endocarditis. Since this microorganism is one of the endocarditis etiological agents, there is a need for greater study in regard to the association with endocarditis and colonic lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is the case description of a 53-year-old man with history of prolapse of the anterior mitral valve leaflet who was diagnosed with endocarditis by E. faecalis and treated with ampicillin and gentamicin. Upon investigation by colonoscopy, he was found t
