A Pressure-Supported Pneumatic Architecture for Robust Deep Drilling on Mars: Performance Modeling, Sizing, and Mission Integration.

Accessing the martian deep subsurface is a long-standing scientific priority for astrobiology, climate reconstruction, and planetary evolution, yet robotic drilling missions have historically been limited by wellbore instability, loss of working-fluid circulation, and the risk of irrecoverable tool entrapment. This work presents and evaluates a wireline, downhole-actuated pneumatic drilling architecture designed to directly mitigate these mission-ending risks through active wellbore pressure support and continuous cuttings removal within a single, sealed CO2 circulation system. The proposed sy

Cumulative Experience of Neighborhood Walkability and Change in Weight and Waist Circumference in REGARDS.

Neighborhood walkability-features of the built environment that promote pedestrian activity-has been associated with greater physical activity and lower body mass index (BMI; calculated as weight (kg)/height (m)2) among neighborhood residents. However, much of the literature has been cross-sectional and only a few cohort studies have assessed neighborhood features throughout follow-up. Using data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study (2003-2016) and a neighborhood walkability index (NWI) measured annually during follow-up, we assessed whether the cumulative exp

Socially active neighborhoods: construct operationalization for aging in place, health promotion and psychometric testing.

From the year 2003 when the first walkability scale was published to date, person-environment fit models and empirical research, some of which was published in Health Promotion International, have encapsulated healthy communities in 'neighborhood walkability'. While there is no doubt that neighborhood walkability positively influences health-seeking behaviors and health, recent models suggest that their measurement and conceptualization have not emphasized the role played by psychosocial and personal factors in aging in place. Thus, the development of scales measuring human ecosystem factors h

Results From the First Para Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Adolescents With Disabilities in the Philippines.

A comprehensive evaluation of physical activity (PA) engagement and policy implementation among Filipino children and adolescents with disabilities is vital in the promotion of an active healthy lifestyle. This is the first Para Report Card of the Philippines that presents the available evidence on the 10 commonly used PA indicators. Published and gray literature were searched for country-specific evidence on PA behaviors, physical fitness, and sources of influence. Stakeholders representing relevant national institutions, special education schools, and advocacy groups also provided input on t

The relationship between job components, neighbourhood walkability and African academics' physical activity: a post-COVID-19 context.

Research to date suggests that physical activity (PA) among academics is insufficient globally. Academics in many African countries were recently required to resume work while observing social distancing protocols. Physical inactivity (PI) was, therefore, expected to increase in such academics. Interestingly, walkable neighbourhoods are resources that could discourage excessive sitting and PI in this situation. This study, therefore, assessed the moderating role of neighbourhood walkability in the relationship between core job components (i.e. on-site teaching, online teaching, research and st

Effects of the road environment on the development of driver sleepiness in young male drivers.

Latent driver sleepiness may in some cases be masked by for example social interaction, stress and physical activity. This short-term modulation of sleepiness may also result from environmental factors, such as when driving in stimulating environments. The aim of this study is to compare two road environments and investigate how they affect driver sleepiness. Thirty young male drivers participated in a driving simulator experiment where they drove two scenarios: a rural environment with winding roads and low traffic density, and a suburban road with higher traffic density and a more built-up r

Respiratory function and atmospheric pollution.

The effects of environmental pollutants on human health and, in particular, on the respiratory apparatus, can be studied fundamentally by means of epidemiological and controlled exposure studies. One epidemiological study has reported the results of research which compared pulmonary function in adults with the average annual concentration of major pollutants in 8 geographical areas of Switzerland; the results demonstrated a direct relationship between atmospheric pollution and a worsening of pulmonary function. Controlled exposure studies, on the other hand, document the effects of specific ai

[Walkability in older age: built environment factors and function-sensitive assessment in urban areas].

Walkability describes how supportive a neighbourhood is for walking and is a key concept for promoting mobility, physical activity and social participation in older age. However, existing approaches do not adequately reflect the specific needs of older adults, especially in the presence of functional limitations. This article outlines how walkability can be further conceptualised, measured in a function-sensitive way and empirically examined in an urban context. The paper presents an age-specific operationalization framework for walkability based on the authors' previous work and a Delphi conse

Associations between the built environment and body mass index among a residentially stable cohort of mid-older aged adults in Brisbane, Australia (2007-2016).

PURPOSE: Understanding the relationship between neighbourhood design and health is important for designing communities that facilitate ageing in place. This study examined trends in body mass index (BMI) across levels of neighbourhood built environment exposure, as well as associations between changes in the built environment and changes in BMI among ageing adults. METHODS: The sample included 11,035 participants aged 40-65 years at baseline from the HABITAT study, residing in Brisbane, Australia. Data were collected over five waves. Self-reported height and weight were used to calculate BMI.

Associations of the objective built environment along the route to school with children's modes of commuting: A multilevel modelling analysis (the SLIC study).

As active commuting levels continue to decline among primary schoolchildren, evidence about which built environmental characteristics influence walking or cycling to school remains inconclusive and is strongly context-dependent. This study aimed to identify the objective built environmental drivers of, and barriers to, active commuting to school for a multi-ethnic sample of 1,889 healthy primary schoolchildren (aged 5-11) in London, UK. Using cross-sectional multilevel ordered logistic regression modelling, supported by the spatial exploration of built environmental characteristics through car

Parental factors in children's active transport to school.

OBJECTIVE: Identify non-distance factors related to children's active transport (AT) to school, including parental, home, and environment characteristics. Understanding the factors related to children's AT to school, beyond distance to school, could inform interventions to increase AT and children's overall physical activity. STUDY DESIGN: Participants were in the Neighborhood Impact on Kids Study, a longitudinal, observational cohort study of children aged 6-11 and their parents in King County, WA and San Diego County, CA between 2007 and 2009. Parents reported frequency and mode of child tr

Identifying environmental factors related to motorcyclist crash rates: variable selection using spatial Random Forest with network distance and barriers.

Motorcycle crashes remain a major global safety concern, particularly in many Asian countries where motorcycles are the primary mode of transportation. While previous studies have identified factors associated with motorcycle crashes using traditional variable selection methods, they often overlook spatial patterns and contextual constraints (such as motorcycles being prohibited from freeways), leading to lower model accuracy. To address this limitation, we introduce a novel variable selection framework, designated as Spatial Random Forest with Network Distance and Barriers (spatialRF-NDBAR),

A novel data-driven multi-agent pedestrian flow risk assessment framework for avoiding stampede incident.

This paper addresses the critical issue of monitoring high-density crowds in public spaces like transportation hubs to prevent accidents from overcrowding. It highlights the limitations of prevailing simulation tools in dealing with real-world challenges such as diverse pedestrian destinations, multi-directional flows, and the medley space designs in communal areas. The paper aims to introduce a data-driven, multi-agent framework that assesses crowd dynamics and early warning conditions in different spatial layouts. The model utilizes real-time visual information and reinforcement learning for

Investigating the contributing factors to autonomous Vehicle-Road user Conflicts: A Data-Driven approach.

With the imminent widespread integration of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) into our traffic ecosystem, understanding the factors that impact their safety is a vital research area. To that end, this study assessed the impact of a wide range of factors on the frequency of AV-road user conflicts. The study utilized the Woven prediction and validation dataset, which contains over 1000 h of data collected from the onboard sensors of 20 AVs in California. Two Copula-based models were developed to investigate the contributing factors to total and severe AV conflicts in road segments (model M1) and interse

Universal Design as Co-Creation: Experiences and Visions from Urban Development Projects in Sweden.

In Swedish policy, Universal design (UD) is implemented as a guiding principle. This paper explores the conditions for co-creation when authorities and civil society collaborate. The empirical basis comes from qualitative analysis of interviews, go-alongs, group discussions, and change-oriented workshops in three urban development projects concerning the re-design of public spaces and buildings in three Swedish cities. Collaboration between municipalities and local disability organisations was formal and established but different expectations of organisations' capacity and opportunities for in

Destinations fostering older adults' walking for transport: a cross-sectional study from Germany.

BACKGROUND: Having destinations within walking distance can encourage older people to walk. Yet, not all destinations may be equally important. Little is known about the types of destinations fostering older adults' walking for transport in small and medium-sized towns and rural communities. The aim of this study was to explore the associations between the availability of different destinations and walking for transport among older adults living in communities with less than 100,000 inhabitants. METHODS: Between May and September 2019, self-reported data from 2242 older adults (≥ 65 years) li

GoWell: the challenges of evaluating regeneration as a population health intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Urban regeneration can be considered a population health intervention (PHI). It is expected to impact on population health but the evidence is limited or weak, in part due to the difficulties of evaluating PHIs. We explore these challenges using GoWell as a case study. METHOD: A 10-year evaluation of housing improvement and urban regeneration in 15 deprived areas in Glasgow, Scotland (2005-2015). RESULTS: Challenges faced include: definition and changing nature of the intervention; identifying the recipients of the intervention; and constraints of study design affecting capacity t
