Toxicological assessments of Gulf War veterans.

Concerns about unexplained illnesses among veterans of the 1991 Gulf War appeared soon after that conflict ended. Many environmental causes have been suggested, including possible exposure to depleted uranium munitions, vaccines and other drugs used to protect troops, deliberate or accidental exposure to chemical warfare agents and pesticides and smoke from oil-well fires. To help resolve these issues, US and UK governments have sought independent expert scientific advice from prestigious, independent scientific and public health experts, including the US National Academies of Science and the

Environmental risk factors for dementia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dementia risk reduction is a major and growing public health priority. While certain modifiable risk factors for dementia have been identified, there remains a substantial proportion of unexplained risk. There is evidence that environmental risk factors may explain some of this risk. Thus, we present the first comprehensive systematic review of environmental risk factors for dementia. METHODS: We searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases from their inception to January 2016, bibliographies of review articles, and articles related to publically available environmental data.

[Environment-related health disorders. Experience and perspectives in the care of patients with environment-related health disorders].

Environmental medicine outpatient clinics, counseling centers, and practicing physicians have observed environment-related health disorders in patient groups of mixed age as well as for groups consisting only of adults or children. Practicing physicians suspected correlations between environmental factors and health disorders in 36-45% of cases, environmental medicine outpatient clinics and counseling centers in 4-34% for mixed-age groups, 0-24% for adults, and 9-13% for children. A comparison of these data is difficult due to differences in data acquisition, evaluation methods, and descriptiv

Emerging MOFs, COFs, and their derivatives for energy and environmental applications.

Traditional fossil fuels significantly contribute to energy supply, economic development, and advancements in science and technology. However, prolonged and extensive use of fossil fuels has resulted in increasingly severe environmental pollution. Consequently, it is imperative to develop new, clean, and pollution-free energy sources with high energy density and versatility as substitutes for conventional fossil fuels, although this remains a considerable challenge. Simultaneously, addressing water pollution is a critical concern. The development, design, and optimization of functional nanomat

Drugs in the environment, viruses in the balance: a review of the untold nexus of pharmaceuticals and virology.

OBJECTIVES: The pervasive contamination of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is a well-documented environmental challenge. However, the impact of this pollution on the most abundant biological entities on Earth viruses has remained a critical blind spot. This review provides the first integrated synthesis of the bidirectional nexus between pharmaceutical pollution and environmental virology. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using search terms related to pharmaceuticals, viruses, and the

The Impact of Environmental Factors on Monogenic Mendelian Diseases.

Environmental factors and gene-environment interactions modify the variable expressivity, progression, severity, and onset of some classic (monogenic) Mendelian-inherited genetic diseases. Cystic fibrosis, Huntington disease, Parkinson's disease, and sickle cell disease are examples of well-known Mendelian disorders that are influenced by exogenous exposures. Environmental factors may act by direct or indirect mechanisms to modify disease severity, timing, and presentation, including through epigenomic influences, protein misfolding, miRNA alterations, transporter activity, and mitochondrial e

Microplastics and nanoplastics: Emerging drivers of liver damage and metabolic dysfunction.

Advanced liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), represents a major global health challenge, driven in part by the rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In parallel, micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs) have emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants with potential hepatotoxic effects. This review provides an in-depth analysis of current knowledge regarding the role of MNPs in the pathogenesis of cirrhosis and HCC, particularly in the context of the growing MASLD burden, and identifies key areas for future research.

Perspective: One Health: a compelling convergence.

One Health has been defined as "the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines--working locally, nationally, and globally--to attain optimal health for people, animals, plants, and our environment." The broadly based One Health movement includes domains as diverse as agricultural and animal science, environmental science, climatology, veterinary medicine, human medicine, and public health. One Health, previously espoused by Virchow, Osler, and other pioneers in medical education, is not a new idea, but, as an approach for dealing with the many global health problems in an increasingly interc

Can Knowledge Counteract Conflict? A Partial Replication Study of PFAS Science Communication.

On the basis of two surveys embedded with a 3 × 2 full-factorial experiment, we examine whether exposing participants to a message about the process of scientific inquiry prepares them to deal with conflicting risk information more effectively. Study 1 suggests initial evidence that, as compared to a testimonial, analogical and inoculation appeals increased trust in science when followed by consistent information. Conflicting information, conversely, was detrimental to risk perception, especially when paired with an inoculation appeal. These findings were not replicated in Study 2. Nevertheles

A nationwide assessment of plastic pollution in the Danish realm using citizen science.

Plastic pollution is considered one of today's major environmental problems. Current land-based monitoring programs typically rely on beach litter data and seldom include plastic pollution further inland. We initiated a citizen science project known as the Mass Experiment inviting schools throughout The Danish Realm (Denmark, Greenland and the Faeroe Islands) to collect litter samples of and document plastic pollution in 8 different nature types. In total approximately 57,000 students (6-19 years) collected 374,082 plastic items in 94 out of 98 Danish municipalities over three weeks during fal

Bacteriophages in the environmental control of antimicrobial resistance: opportunities, risks, and surveillance challenges.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health challenge, driven by the persistence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). These resistance determinants can accumulate and spread across diverse environmental compartments, including wastewater, hospital effluents, agricultural systems, and landfills, facilitating their dissemination through mechanisms such as horizontal gene transfer. Bacteriophages have emerged as promising tools for the targeted control of antibiotic-resistant bacterial populations, as their lytic activity ca

Visual environmental risk factors in outdoor activities and near work and potential mechanisms.

PURPOSE: Myopia is highly prevalent among children and adolescents and results from abnormal refractive development. Less outdoor time as well as more near work have been recognised as major risk factors for myopia. This study analysed the major environmental factors related to myopia, such as outdoor activities and near work, and reviewed the potential mechanisms of myopia development. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Ovid databases within the last two decades up to November 2024. This review followed the recommendations of the PR

Unveiling environmental drivers of Moso bamboo sap flow using causal inference.

Studying the relationship between Moso bamboo sap flow and environmental factors is essential for understanding the water transpiration patterns of this species. Traditional methods often rely on correlation analysis, but correlation does not imply causation. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of how major environmental factors influence Moso bamboo sap flow, we analyzed the causality between them. First, the Fast Causal Inference algorithm was used to explore non-temporal causal relationships. Subsequently, the Latent Peter-Clark Momentary Conditional Independence algorithm was employed t

Global climate change and human health.

Global climate change is a vexing economic, environmental, and public health problem. Climatologists have documented a rise in global average temperature that is unprecedented since the Industrial Revolution. This temperature change correlates with increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases, which largely are of human origin. Global climate change is likely to profoundly affect global health. This article summarizes the science of climatology and global climate change caused by human actions and reviews potential health effects.

Methylmercury and the health of indigenous peoples: a risk management challenge for physical and social sciences and for public health policy.

Methylmercury in aquatic ecosystems and bio-accumulated in aquatic biota, especially fish, is a major public health concern internationally. Precautionary efforts are currently underway internationally to reduce the anthropogenic release of mercury, which in turn, over time, will reduce human exposure. However, at the present time, it is important to address the issue of management of the risks of exposure as they exist now. Of particular concern are the impacts of methylmercury on indigenous populations which depend on fish as a subsistence food source, both in remote areas of developed count
