Impact of air pollutants from surface transport sources on human health: A modeling and epidemiological approach.

This study adopted an integrated 'source-to-receptor' assessment paradigm in order to determine the effects of emissions from passenger transport on urban air quality and human health in the megacity, Delhi. The emission modeling was carried out for the base year 2007 and three alternate (ALT) policy scenarios along with a business as usual (BAU) scenario for the year 2021. An Activity-Structure-Emission Factor (ASF) framework was adapted for emission modeling, followed by a grid-wise air quality assessment using AERMOD and a health impact assessment using an epidemiological approach. It was o

Investigating the role of transportation models in epidemiologic studies of traffic related air pollution and health effects.

In two earlier case-control studies conducted in Montreal, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a marker for traffic-related air pollution was found to be associated with the incidence of postmenopausal breast cancer and prostate cancer. These studies relied on a land use regression model (LUR) for NO2 that is commonly used in epidemiologic studies for deriving estimates of traffic-related air pollution. Here, we investigate the use of a transportation model developed during the summer season to generate a measure of traffic emissions as an alternative to the LUR model. Our traffic model provides estimates

Preclinical sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in French blood donors: an epidemiologic model-based study.

BACKGROUND: A recent case-control study showed that transfusion recipients were at an increased risk of developing sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), suggesting that blood donors with silent preclinical sCJD could transmit the sCJD agent. We therefore estimated the annual number of French blood donors expected to have preclinical sCJD at the time of donation. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We developed a mathematical model to estimate the number of blood donors who would subsequently develop sCJD, under various assumptions about how long their blood might be infective before clinical onset

Epidemiological modelling of risk factors of human papilloma virus in women with positive cytology in the county of Csongrád.

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and risk factors of genital HPV infection in women diagnosed with non-negative cytology in Southeastern Hungary. Cervical samples were collected for cytology and HPV testing from women seen at gynaecological outpatient clinics and diagnosed with non-negative cytology. The observed overall average HPV infection rate was found to be 61%. A smoking habit was the only risk factor in the logistic regression analysis that related significantly to exposure to HPV infection. Thus, prevention strategies should focus on the regular clinical cytologi

Item response modeling of DSM-IV mania symptoms in two representative US epidemiological samples.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable debate surrounding the effective measurement of DSM-IV symptoms used to assess manic disorders in epidemiological samples. METHOD: Using two nationally representative datasets, the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC, n=43,093 at wave 1, n=34,653 at 3-year follow-up) and the National Comorbidity Survey - Replication (NCS-R, n=9282), we examined the psychometric properties of symptoms used to assess DSM-IV mania. The predictive utility of the mania factor score was tested using the 3-year follow-up data in NESARC. RESULTS

Model-averaged benchmark concentration estimates for continuous response data arising from epidemiological studies.

Worker populations often provide data on adverse responses associated with exposure to potential hazards. The relationship between hazard exposure levels and adverse response can be modeled and then inverted to estimate the exposure associated with some specified response level. One concern is that this endpoint may be sensitive to the concentration metric and other variables included in the model. Further, it may be that the models yielding different risk endpoints are all providing relatively similar fits. We focus on evaluating the impact of exposure on a continuous response by constructing

Epidemiological model of typhoid fever and its use in the planning and evaluation of antityphoid immunization and sanitation programmes.

An epidemiological model has been constructed for typhoid fever in a stable population in order to study the transmission of infection at different levels of endemicity. It involves a number of parameters representing the proportions of epidemiological subgroups in the population-such as the susceptible, the infected, and the immune-and rates of transition between the groups. Numerical values based on available evidence were assigned to the parameters, to provide a realistic simulation of stable endemicity.Changes were then introduced in the values of some of the parameters in order to study t

Modelling African Swine Fever Transmission and Epidemiology: A Scoping Review of Mechanistic, Statistical, and Machine Learning Approaches.

African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease of domestic and wild pigs that has re-emerged as a major transboundary disease. Modelling using mechanistic, statistical, and machine learning (ML) approaches plays a key role in understanding ASF transmission and informing disease control, but the literature remains fragmented. To synthesise global ASF modelling efforts, we systematically reviewed studies applying these three approaches. We examined temporal and geographic trends, modelling objectives, explanatory variables, and model evaluation practices. A total of 151 papers published through 20

Spatiotemporal patterns of Rift Valley fever virus in Africa: a retrospective genomic epidemiology and phylodynamic modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic pathogen causing outbreaks in humans and ruminants across Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Originally restricted to the Great Rift Valley, RVFV has expanded geographically, prompting its classification by WHO as a pathogen of pandemic potential. We investigated the evolutionary and spatial dynamics of RVFV across Africa. METHODS: We used genomic data generated at the International Livestock Research Institute Nairobi genomic laboratory (BioProject PRJNA1106221) and combined with publicly available datasets retrieved from

Livestock production losses attributable to brucellosis in northern and central Tanzania: Application of an epidemiological-economic modelling framework.

Livestock brucellosis is an endemic disease in many low-resource settings. Despite its widespread distribution, little is known about the scale of economic impacts caused by the disease. This study aimed to develop an integrated epidemiological-economic modelling framework to estimate production losses attributable to livestock brucellosis, using Tanzania as a case study. Data on livestock production and prevalence of exposure to Brucella spp. were obtained from surveys conducted in northern and central Tanzania between 2013 and 2019. A clustering algorithm was applied to classify households i

Spatiotemporal dynamics of epidemiology diseases: mobility based risk and short-term prediction modeling of COVID-19.

Nowadays, epidemiological modeling is applied to a wide range of diseases, communicable and non-communicable, namely AIDS, Ebola, influenza, Dengue, Malaria, Zika. More recently, in the context of the last pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), several studies applied these models to SARS-CoV-2. Despite the increasing number of researches using spatial analysis, some constraints persist that prevent more complex modeling such as capturing local epidemiological dynamics or capturing the real patterns and dynamics. For example, the unavailability of: (i) epidemiological inform

Predicting the epidemiological trend of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in China using Bayesian structural time-series model.

This study aims to explore the application value of the Bayesian Time Structure Sequence (BSTS) model in estimating the acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) epidemics. The reported AHC cases spanning from January 2011 to October 2022 in China were collated. Utilizing R software, the BSTS and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models were constructed using the data from January 2011 to December 2021. The prediction effect of both models was compared using the data from January to October 2022, and finally the AHC incidence from November 2022 to December 2023 was predicted. The r

Epidemiology and control of SARS-CoV-2 epidemics in partially vaccinated populations: a modeling study applied to France.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is expected to change the epidemiology and management of SARS-CoV-2 epidemics. METHODS: We used an age-stratified compartmental model calibrated to French data to anticipate these changes and determine implications for the control of an autumn epidemic. We assumed vaccines reduce the risk of hospitalization, infection, and transmission if infected by 95%, 60%, and 50%, respectively. RESULTS: In our baseline scenario characterized by basic reproduction number R0=5 and a vaccine coverage of 70-80-90% among 12-17, 18-59, and ≥ 60 years old, important stress on healthcare

A Dynamic Compartmental Model to Explore the Optimal Strategy of Varicella Vaccination: An Epidemiological Study in Jiangsu Province, China.

Varicella (chickenpox) is highly contagious among children and frequently breaks out in schools. In this study, we developed a dynamic compartment model to explore the optimal schedule for varicella vaccination in Jiangsu Province, China. A susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model was proposed to simulate the transmission of varicella in different age groups. The basic reproduction number was computed by the kinetic model, and the impact of three prevention factors was assessed through the global sensitivity analysis. Finally, the effect of various vaccination scenarios was qualitatively eva

Vaccine efficacy trials for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever: Insights from modelling different epidemiological settings.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a priority emerging pathogen for which a licensed vaccine is not yet available. We aim to assess the feasibility of conducting phase III vaccine efficacy trials and the role of varying transmission dynamics. METHODS: We calibrate models of CCHF virus (CCHFV) transmission among livestock and spillover to humans in endemic areas in Afghanistan, Turkey and South Africa. We propose an individual randomised controlled trial targeted to high-risk population, and use the calibrated models to simulate trial cohorts to estimate the minimum necessa
