The use of germicidal ultraviolet light, vaporized hydrogen peroxide and dry heat to decontaminate face masks and filtering respirators contaminated with a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the supply of personal protective equipment remains under severe strain. To address this issue, re-use of surgical face masks and filtering facepiece respirators has been recommended; prior decontamination is paramount to their re-use. AIM: We aim to provide information on the effects of three decontamination procedures on porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV)-contaminated masks and respirators, presenting a stable model for infectious coronavirus decontamination of these typicall

Analysis of regenerated amine-reactive polymer microarray slides.

Reactive polymer-coated microarray substrates based on N-hydroxyl succinimide (NHS) chemistry lose their bio-immobilization reactivity to probe nucleophiles over time, both in use and in storage, due to their intrinsic hydrolytic instability. Poor DNA and protein probe immobilization efficiency is often observed with routine microarray printing conditions, with accompanying reliability and stability issues for assay. We report a one-step reaction to regenerate NHS-reactive chemistry in situ on these microarray polymer surfaces with simple, straightforward reaction chemistry. Surfaces regenerat

Evaluation of 12-Week Shelf Life of Patient-Ready Endoscopes.

Current research suggests that for certain types of gastrointestinal endoscopes, longer shelf life (the interval of storage after which endoscopes should be reprocessed before their reuse) may not increase the likelihood of endoscope contamination. Scope contamination may, in fact, be related primarily to either inadequate disinfection processes or inadvertent contamination during storage, not to duration of storage. The purpose of this study evaluated the presence of bacteria and fungus following liquid chemical sterilization in colonoscopes and gastroscopes, after 12 weeks of shelf life duri

Reuse of single use medical devices.

During the ten years that I have worked at the Canadian Nurses Protective Society, we have had numerous calls from Operating Room nurses questioning the practice of re-using single use medical devices in their facilities and voicing their concerns about possible harm to patients, themselves and potential liability exposure. Interest in this topic has been rekindled by the recent Saskatchewan case involving the death of a patient from variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (vCJD) and possible transmission of vCJD to 71 patients who may have been exposed to the same endoscope as the deceased while in

Of masks and methylene blue-The use of methylene blue photochemical treatment to decontaminate surgical masks contaminated with a tenacious small nonenveloped norovirus.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, reuse of personal protective equipment, specifically that of medical face coverings, has been recommended. The reuse of these typically single-use only items necessitates procedures to inactivate contaminating human respiratory and gastrointestinal pathogens. We previously demonstrated decontamination of surgical masks and respirators contaminated with infectious SARS-CoV-2 and various animal coronaviruses via low concentration- and short exposure methylene blue photochemical treatment (10 µM methylene blue, 30 minutes of 12,500-lux red li

Plasma-generated reactive water mist for disinfection of N95 respirators laden with MS2 and T4 bacteriophage viruses.

Due to the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, the interest and demand for sterilization devices to reuse PPE has increased. For reuse of face masks, they must be effectively decontaminated of potential infectious agents without compromising its filtration ability during sterilization. In this study, we utilized an atmospheric pressure pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), combined with nebulized liquid microdroplets to generate plasma-activated mist (PAM). MS2 and T4 bacteriophages were used to conduct the decontamination tests on two types of N9

Interventions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from health-system solid waste: a systematic review.

When considering the entire lifecycle of products, including manufacturing, distribution, use, and end-of-life disposal, health-system solid waste contributes substantially to health-system greenhouse gas emissions, making the issue an important target for sustainability and decarbonisation action. In this systematic review, we examined sustainability principles and interventions that have been implemented in Australia and other high-income countries to reduce the greenhouse gas emission footprint of solid waste in the health-care and aged-care sectors, considering the waste hierarchy for the

Sterilizable and Reusable UV-Resistant Graphene-Polyurethane Elastomer Composites.

Shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic caused medical workers to reuse medical supplies such as N95 masks. While ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is commonly used for sterilization, UVGI can also damage the elastomeric components of N95 masks, preventing effective fit and thus weakening filtration efficacy. Although PPE shortage is no longer an acute issue, the development of sterilizable and reusable UV-resistant elastomers remains of high interest from a long-term sustainability and health perspective. Here, graphene nanosheets, produc

Adsorptive stripping voltammetry of antibiotics rifamycin SV and rifampicin at renewable pencil electrodes.

Adsorptive stripping voltammetry of antibiotics of rifamycin SV (RSV) and rifampicin (RIF) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry using a renewable pencil graphite electrode (PGE). The nature of the oxidation process of RSV and RIF taking place at the PGE was characterized. The results show that the determination of highly sensitive oxidation peak current is the basis of a simple, accurate and rapid method for quantification of RSV and RIF in bulk forms, pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids by differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (

Decontamination Strategies for Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs) in Healthcare Organizations: A Comprehensive Review.

Filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) are made for one-time use. A massive shortage of FFRs is widespread during pandemic events and has forced many healthcare organizations to decontaminate them and re-use for a limited time. Many decontamination methods have been proposed for the decontamination of FFRs. This review highlights various aspects of decontamination methods available in the literature. Among various methods available, vaporized hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet irradiation, and dry heat seem to be the most promising decontaminants for FFRs. On the other hand, microwave, bleach, eth

A technique for re-utilizing catheter insertion sites in children with difficult central venous access.

Maintenance of central venous access in patients with chronic medical conditions such as short bowel syndrome demands forethought and ingenuity. We describe an innovative technique for re-utilizing central venous access sites in patients who have chronic central venous access needs. Records of patients undergoing this technique were reviewed between August 2012 and December 2015. The technique involves "cutting-down" to the sterile fibrous tunnel that naturally forms around tunneled catheters. The fibrous sheath is then isolated and controlled much as would be done for a venous "cut-down." A s

Thermal stability of polyethylene terephthalate food contact materials: formation of volatiles from retain samples and implications for recycling.

PET packaging materials have been tested for volatile content after exposure to high temperatures. Samples included laminates, bottles, and roasting bags, and were heated at 120 degrees C, 150 degrees C and 230 degrees C for 50 min, according to sample type. Volatiles released from the material were trapped on Tenax, identified by GC-MS and assessed against a 10 micrograms/kg migration threshold limit. Few volatiles were found for samples composed only of PET. Volatiles from laminates varied according to the sample structure, but the main substances identified were not related to PET, but prob

The technology of dialyzer reuse.

Dialyzer reuse has become an integral part of chronic hemodialysis in the United States of America because it has large economic benefits which allow the use of expensive, biocompatible membranes, and the delivery of adequate dialysis therapy in the face of continued inflation of costs and fixed reimbursement. The conflict between patient safety and provider economic benefit has been resolved by the development of recommended practice guidelines by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. When followed carefully, disinfection of dialyzers for multiple reuse by the same p
