BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary disease that causes deoxygenated erythrocytes to stiffen, resulting in vaso-occlusive crises, endothelial damage, organ failure and systemic consequences. An abnormal leukocyte count is associated with a worse clinical picture in SCD.
METHODS: I studied the link between an abnormal leukocyte count and sickle cell disease. BACKGROUND: Bacteremia is associated with periodontal diseases whose extent is related to the severity of inflammation in periodontal tissues. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the various blood parameters in healthy subjects and severe chronic periodontitis patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 100 patients with severe chronic periodontitis (test group) and 100 periodontally healthy subjects (control group) in the age group 35-60 years participated in the study. Blood parameters were recorded with blood samples drawn from the antecubital fossa by venous puncture.

Septic arthritis represents 8-27% of cases of monoarthritis presenting to the emergency department. Tocilizumab is an interleukin-6 blocking monoclonal antibody with the mechanistic potential to interfere with the body's normal inflammatory response to an infectious insult. Five cases of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis diagnosed clinically and with radioisotope studies are reported. All patients presented with symptoms of back pain, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and a normal leukocyte count. Three had positive blood cultures and four had changes on plain radiographs. All five had positive phosphate bone and Ga-67 imaging, and two showed paravertebral uptake of gallium giving a "butterfly"-like appearance.

Nocardia intracranial abscesses occur almost exclusively in patients who are immunocompromised due to diabetes, transplantation, or HIV/AIDS. Patients usually present with seizures, headaches, fevers, and menin-gismus. Laboratory evaluation is nonspecific but may reveal an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and white blood cell count.
