Seventy-seven potential analogs of phospholipid polar heads, choline and ethanolamine, were evaluated in vitro as inhibitors of Plasmodium falciparum growth. This paper presents the application of an efficient method for extraction and fractionation of intact phospholipids (PLs) from complex sediment matrices and elucidation of their molecular structure by normal-phase HPLC-ESI-MS-MS. Flow-blending extraction was tested with different solvent mixtures and the best recovery of all PLs classes from the sediment matrix was achieved by using methanol-dichloromethane-buffer, 2:1:0.8. A patient undergoing repeated endoscopic injection therapy for important bleeding from a duodenal ulcer developed intestinal perforation followed by extrahepatic obstructive jaundice resulting from benign biliary stricture. It is proposed that these complications were a consequence of the use of ethanolamine oleate as part of the injection regimen and caution against the use of this material is needed, particularly as current clinical trials suggest that sclerosants offer no advantage over injection therapy with dilute adrenaline alone.

Undernutrition and vitamin A deficiency during early period of life causes a significant decrease in lung, heart and testes weights. But the concentration of total phospholipid was unaffected. However the individual phospholipids showed some changes. The concentration of phosphatidyl ethanolamine was decreased in the lung from vitamin A deficient rats. On the other hand sphingomyelin and cardiolipin showed a marked increase in heart. The concentration of phosphatidyl serine and inositol fraction was significantly lower in testes from undernourished rats as compared to controls.

A 66-year-old woman with a gastric varix, draining into a dilated left adrenal vein and a left inferior phrenic vein, was treated with dual balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (B-RTO). Under balloon occlusion of the left adrenal vein and the left inferior phrenic vein, retrograde injection of a sclerosant (5% ethanolamine oleate) into the gastric varix was performed. Two weeks later, disappearance of flow in the gastric varix was confirmed on endoscopic ultrasound examination.
