[Ecology of Cryptococcus neoformans in central Africa].

Cryptococcosis associated with AIDS is mainly due to Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans which is found in saprophytic form in pigeon droppings. This variety has been isolated in Central Africa, particularly in Zaire, Burundi and Rwanda, from dust collected from the houses of patients with cryptococcosis. Several patients confirmed frequent contact with pigeons. Recent studies in Australia demonstrated a link between the yeast and Eucalyptus of the camaldulensis and teriticornis species. These two species were imported to Central Africa from Australia. Examination of 657 Eucalyptus specime

Natural Oils Enhance the Topical Delivery of Ketoconazole by Nanoemulgel for Fungal Infections.

Nanoemulgel (NEG) pharmaceutical formulations are gaining popularity because of their ability to serve both as a nanoemulsion and as a gel. These products are well-known for their ease of use, spreadability, controlled release, and ability to hydrate dry skin. Natural essential oils have been shown to promote the cutaneous permeability of topical formulations, enhancing medication safety and efficacy. Herein, we developed NEG for the enhanced permeation of ketoconazole against candidiasis using clove oil (clove-oil-NEG) or eucalyptus oil (eucalyptus-oil-NEG), using the gelling agents carbopol

Environmental isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii and C. neoformans var. neoformans in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.

In order to determine the environmental occurrence of both varieties of Cryptococcus neoformans in the city of São Paulo, pigeon droppings and vegetable material from trees of the genus Eucalyptus were collected at typically crowded places. A total of 38 sites downtown where large heaps of pigeon droppings could be found were selected for sampling. Pigeon droppings from 10 (26.3%) of these sites were positive for C. neoformans var. neoformans in at least one sample. Twelve eucalyptus woods located within four municipal parks were also surveyed; vegetable material from Eucalyptus spp. trees wer

Removal of hydrogen sulfide from biogas using activated carbon synthesized from different locally available biomass wastes - a case study from Palestine.

The main aim of this study was to remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from biogas by adsorption using synthesized activated carbon prepared using locally available biomass. The effect of the type of precursors, impregnation reagent and bed height was studied in continuous reactors. Three types of biomass wastes (almond shells, eucalyptus and coffee grains) were collected, grinded, sieved, pyrolyzed at 500°C and impregnated with chemical reagents such as potassium hydroxide or zinc chloride. Adsorption tests were performed using a fixed bed filter filled with the produced activated carbon. The highes

Essential Oils and Their Components Control Behaviour of Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) Larvae.

Beetle Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) is a well-known pest of grain and flour in food stores and grocery shops. Recently, commercial cultivation of the insect was started for human food and animal feed. Behaviour control of this insect using natural repellents is promising both for grain protection and commercial cultivation. We analysed if natural products of plant origin, namely essential oils (EOs), could be used for this purpose. Behavioural tests were performed using EOs of six plants: thymus (Thymus vulgaris), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), spearmint (Mentha spicata),

An ex vivo, assessor blind, randomised, parallel group, comparative efficacy trial of the ovicidal activity of three pediculicides after a single application--melaleuca oil and lavender oil, eucalyptus oil and lemon tea tree oil, and a "suffocation" pediculicide.

BACKGROUND: There are two components to the clinical efficacy of pediculicides: (i) efficacy against the crawling-stages (lousicidal efficacy); and (ii) efficacy against the eggs (ovicidal efficacy). Lousicidal efficacy and ovicidal efficacy are confounded in clinical trials. Here we report on a trial that was specially designed to rank the clinical ovicidal efficacy of pediculicides. Eggs were collected, pre-treatment and post-treatment, from subjects with different types of hair, different coloured hair and hair of different length. METHOD: Subjects with at least 20 live eggs of Pediculus c

Impacts of the Herbal Antimicrobial Compounds on the Antimicrobial Potency of Green Synthesized Copper Nanoparticles.

Plant-mediated synthesis is a most recent approach toward green synthesis of copper-based nanoparticles. In this approach nanoparticles are capped with phytochemicals, suggesting that plants with unique biological properties might transfer these benefits to the nanoparticles. However, there is no experimental evidences to directly corelate bioactivities of nanoparticles to their capping phytochemicals. This study aims to assess the impacts of herbal antimicrobial compounds on the antimicrobial potency of resulted nanoparticles. Cu(OH)2 nanoparticles (CuNPs) were synthesized by leaf extracts of

Isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans serotype D from Eucalypts in South Brazil.

Cryptococcus neoformans causes the second most common opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS. In Brazil, 4.5% of the AIDS-related opportunistic infections are caused by C. neoformans and all varieties are recognized as etiological agents of cryptococcosis. This pathogen is a ubiquitous environmental yeast, commonly associated with avian excreta and decaying wood, especially Eucalypt species. The aim of the present study was to search for C. neoformans in Eucalypts and analyze the genotypic diversity of the obtained isolates by RAPD and PCR fingerprinting. All obtained isolates have been
