Technological advancements in stroke rehabilitation.

Early, coordinated, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation plays a major part in motor recovery after stroke. The conventional stroke rehabilitation primarily includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. However, with these conventional methods, many stroke survivors still have a residual functional disability which impairs their ability to perform activities of daily living. This could be attributed to the insufficient therapy dose, low engagement and motivation of the patient, and lack of objective feedback to achieve significant improvements in function. Various techno

Cerebellar Atrophy Associated with Primary Sjögren's Syndrome: Diagnosis, Therapy, and Virtual Reality Rehabilitation: A Case Report.

Cerebellar involvement in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an uncommon condition, with only a limited number of cases described worldwide. A 43-year-old woman affected by cerebellar atrophy associated with pSS was referred to our center to undergo a cycle of physical rehabilitation therapy. Although motor symptoms started when the patient was 23 years of age, the underlying disease remained undiagnosed for several years. Neurological examination before rehabilitation revealed ataxic gait, dysmetria, nystagmus, and hypermetric saccades; the patients complained about unsteadiness while standi

Inhibitory Control Deficits in Children with Tic Disorders Revealed by Object-Hit-and-Avoid Task.

BACKGROUND: Tic disorders may reflect impaired inhibitory control. This has been evaluated using different behavioural tasks, yielding mixed results. Our objective was to test inhibitory control in children with tics through simultaneous presentation of multiple, mobile stimuli. METHODS: Sixty-four children with tics (mean age 12.4 years; 7.5-18.5) were evaluated using a validated robotic bimanual exoskeleton protocol (Kinarm) in an object-hit-and-avoid task, in which target and distractor objects moved across a screen and participants aimed to hit only the targets while avoiding distractors.

Rehabilitation for Parkinson's disease: Current outlook and future challenges.

Rehabilitation is considered as an adjuvant to pharmacological and surgical treatments for Parkinson's disease (PD) to maximize functional ability and minimize secondary complications. Originally, approaches were based on empirical experience, but growing evidence suggests that exercise-dependent plasticity constitutes the main mechanism underlying the effects of physiotherapy. Exercise increases synaptic strength and influences neurotransmission, thus potentiating functional circuitry in PD. In addition, exercise is a pivotal element of motor learning. PD patients retain a sufficient capacity
