Exploration of extraterrestrial biosignatures and planetary habitability: A prospect.

China's deep space exploration has achieved remarkable accomplishments and is now undergoing a significant strategic transition from an engineering-driven program to one that integrates engineering and science. This shift provides a timely opportunity for China to systematically define the development directions and overall framework of planetary science by targeting scientific frontiers, focusing on key research areas, and addressing major scientific questions. In this context, we provide an in-depth analysis of the crucial role of searching for potential biosignatures and investigating plane

Comprehensive Atomistic Simulations of Fischer-Tropsch in Outer Space: Astrocatalysis by Fe13-Supported Nanoclusters on SiO2.

Catalytic processes are fundamental not only to terrestrial chemistry (e.g., in the synthesis of fuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals) but also to extraterrestrial chemistry, contributing to chemical reactions occurring in various astrophysical environments. In space, gas-phase reactions are limited due to sparse energy sources and the absence of a medium for energy dissipation, making heterogeneous catalysis on cosmic dust grains essential for driving chemical transformations. Iron nanoclusters (FeNCs) embedded on these grains present intriguing catalytic properties, especially for Fischer-T

Integrating Single-Sample Networks and Genetic Algorithm to Estimate Radiation Dose in Multiple Tissues of Mice under Space Environment.

Exposure to space radiation poses various health risks, so accurately estimating radiation dose in space is crucial. Herein, we integrated 301 transcriptomic profiles from 30 spaceflight datasets and developed radiation-dose estimation models for the space environment using a genetic algorithm. Two models were constructed in this work: one using gene expression fold changes as input (fold change model) and the other using gene degrees as input (degree model). Of note, we initially constructed a single sample network (SSN) for each spaceflight sample, respectively, and the degrees that represen

Extremophiles survival to simulated space conditions: an astrobiology model study.

In this work we investigated the ability of four extremophilic bacteria from Archaea and Bacteria domains to resist to space environment by exposing them to extreme conditions of temperature, UV radiation, desiccation coupled to low pressure generated in a Mars' conditions simulator. All the investigated extremophilic strains (namely Sulfolobus solfataricus, Haloterrigena hispanica, Thermotoga neapolitana and Geobacillus thermantarcticus) showed a good resistance to the simulation of the temperature variation in the space; on the other hand irradiation with UV at 254 nm affected only slightly

Cryogenic synthesis of molecules of astrobiological interest: catalytic role of cosmic dust analogues.

We have studied the effects of the substrate, namely amorphous olivine (MgFeSiO(4)) cosmic dust analogues (CDAs), in synthesis of molecules obtained after 200 keV proton irradiation of formamide (NH(2)COH). Formamide has been deposited on the olivine substrate at 20 K. The abundances of new molecular species formed after an irradiation dose of 12 eV/16 amu in formamide pure (i.e. deposited on an inert silicon substrate) and deposited on CDAs have been compared. Specifically, MgFeSiO(4) amorphous olivine is a selective catalyst preventing formation of NH(3) and CN(-) molecules and changing the

The sensitivity of gas-phase models of dense interstellar clouds to changes in dissociative recombination branching ratios.

The approach of Bates to the determination of neutral product branching ratios in ion-electron dissociative recombination reactions has been utilised in conjunction with quantum chemical techniques to redetermine branching ratios for a wide variety of important reactions of this class in dense interstellar clouds. The branching ratios have then been used in a pseudo time-dependent model calculation of the gas phase chemistry of a dark cloud resembling TMC-1 and the results compared with an analogous model containing previously used branching ratios. In general, the changes in branching ratios

Chemical and physical microenvironments at the Viking landing sites.

Physical and chemical considerations permit the division of the near-surface regolith on Mars into at least six zones of distinct microenvironments. The zones are euphotic, duricrust/peds, tempofrost, permafrost, endolithic, and interfacial/transitional. Microenvironments vary significantly in temperature extremes, mean temperature, salt content, relative pressure of water vapor, UV and visible light irradiance, and exposure to ionizing radiation events (100 Mrad) and oxidative molecular species. From what is known of the chemistry of the atmosphere and regolith fines (soil), limits upon the a

Biofilm and planktonic lifestyles differently support the resistance of the desert cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis under space and Martian simulations.

When Chroococcidiopsis sp. strain CCMEE 057 from the Sinai Desert and strain CCMEE 029 from the Negev Desert were exposed to space and Martian simulations in the dried status as biofilms or multilayered planktonic samples, the biofilms exhibited an enhanced rate of survival. Compared to strain CCMEE 029, biofilms of strain CCME 057 better tolerated UV polychromatic radiation (5 × 10(5) kJ/m(2) attenuated with a 0.1% neutral density filter) combined with space vacuum or Martian atmosphere of 780 Pa. CCMEE 029, on the other hand, failed to survive UV polychromatic doses higher than 1.5 × 10(3) k

The Abiotic Background as a Central Component of a Sample Safety Assessment Protocol for Sample Return.

Martian rock and regolith samples are being collected and cached by NASA's Perseverance rover, with the goal of returning them to Earth as soon as the mid-2030s. Upon return, samples would be housed in a sample receiving facility under biological containment to prevent exposing Earth's biosphere to any potential biohazards that might be present. Samples could be released from high containment for scientific investigations if they are found to be safe or are sterilized. The Sample Safety Assessment Protocol Tiger Team (SSAP-TT) was convened by the Sample Receiving Project between August 2023 an

Carbonaceous matter in cometary dust and coma.

The analysis of carbonaceous matter in p/Halley's dust and coma via mass spectrometry of positive ions is reviewed. Dust impact generated ions were analyzed by the PUMA instrument aboard VEGA I, and coma plasma ions by the PICCA instrument aboard GIOTTO. For the organic molecules results an overall C:H:O:N ratio of 1.:1.4:0.6:0.1. Most of this polymer material can formally be understood as an aggregation of monomers C2H2, CH2O, and HCN. Special emphasis is given to possible aromatic, especially heterocyclic, and other unsaturated ions, and their importance for abiotic chemical and prebiotic ev

Physicochemical Properties of α‑Pinene in Water Ice Analogs under Energetic Heavy-Ion Irradiation.

Studying the physicochemical properties of ice in astronomical environments is crucial to understanding the chemical processes involved in cosmic events such as comet and planet formation. The physical characteristics and chemical evolution on the surfaces of cosmic objects such as comets or interstellar grains offer key insights into these processes. This study focuses on α-pinene, a carbon- and hydrogen-rich molecule, which serves as a model for investigating radical-driven synthesis of more complex molecules under space-like conditions. It also provides a useful analogy for complex terrestr

Abiotic formation of nitrile precursors to amino acids and nucleobases in interstellar ice analogues.

Amino acids and the five canonical nucleobases have been identified in carbonaceous meteorites such as Murchison and Murray; however, their formation mechanisms under interstellar conditions have remained largely elusive. Here, we report the synthesis of biorelevant nitriles, key precursors to amino acids and nucleobases, in low-temperature interstellar model ices composed of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) irradiated with galactic cosmic ray proxies in the form of energetic electrons. Ammonia (NH3), diazene (HNNH), methylamine (CH3NH2), ammonium cyanide (NH4CN), ethanimine (CH3CHNH), and nitriles incl

Radiation protection and structural stability of fungal melanin polylactic acid biocomposites in low Earth orbit.

Materials in low Earth orbit (LEO) face radiation, atomic oxygen erosion, and extreme temperature fluctuations, which can severely compromise their structural and functional integrity. Developing lightweight, multifunctional materials capable of withstanding these harsh conditions is critical for long-term space exploration and sustainable extraterrestrial settlements. This study evaluates the structural stability and radiation shielding efficacy of polylactic acid (PLA) and biocomposites, including PLA infused with fungal melanin, synthetic melanin, or animal melanin, and a compressed myceliu

Light Quality Modulates Photosynthesis and Antioxidant Properties of B. vulgaris L. Plants from Seeds Irradiated with High-Energy Heavy Ions: Implications for Cultivation in Space.

Beta vulgaris L. is a crop selected for cultivation in Space for its nutritional properties. However, exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) can alter plant photosynthetic performance and phytochemical production in the extraterrestrial environment. This study investigated if plant growth under different light quality regimes (FL-white fluorescent; RGB-red-green-blue; RB-red-blue) modifies the photosynthetic behavior and bioactive compound synthesis of plants sprouted by dry seeds irradiated with carbon or titanium high-energy ions. The study evidenced that: (i) the plant response depends on the

An ensemble dose-response model for monoenergetic ions and doses relevant for space radiation carcinogenesis.

For future missions to the moon or Mars, exposure to space radiation is a significant hazard requiring accurate risk assessment tools to guide and evaluate mitigation strategies. NASA has developed a cancer risk assessment model to perform such projections, but uncertainties associated with radiation quality and dose-rate effects are substantial. Quality factors (QFs) are used to describe the enhanced effectiveness of radiation types found in space for inducing a health effect (carcinogenesis, in this case) compared to terrestrial radiation. Space radiation QFs are developed on the basis of do

Planning Implications Related to Sterilization-Sensitive Science Investigations Associated with Mars Sample Return (MSR).

The NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return (MSR) Campaign seeks to establish whether life on Mars existed where and when environmental conditions allowed. Laboratory measurements on the returned samples are useful if what is measured is evidence of phenomena on Mars rather than of the effects of sterilization conditions. This report establishes that there are categories of measurements that can be fruitful despite sample sterilization and other categories that cannot. Sterilization kills living microorganisms and inactivates complex biological structures by breaking chemical bonds. Sterilization has simi

[Cytogenetic effects on blood lymphocytes of cosmonauts after low doses of space radiation].

Cytogenetic changes in cultures of blood lymphocytes from 37 cosmonauts returned from space flights of varying duration were analyzed. Prolonged stay in space was shown to increase numbers of stable and unstable chromosomal aberrations. Frequency of dicentric and centric rings depends on flight duration, as well as values of accumulated dose from and dose rate of space radiation. Egress into open space leads to an additional growth in the number of chromosomal aberrations. It was found that frequency of chromosomal aberrations in blood lymphocytes remains altered even after several years of co
