Thirty-nine patients with cold urticaria seen over a 12-year-period were re-examined. All but 12 still had positive skin tests for cold and only five of these had shown a spontaneous cure. Fourteen patients were prone to collapse on cold exposure. The incidence of atopy in this group was comparable to that in control groups. Cold urticaria is an extremely chronic disease. The mean disease duration was 9.3 years. Serum antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus, measles virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), Chlamydia psittaci and Mycoplasma pneumoniae wer

Hypothermia is a critical consequence of extreme cold exposure that increases the risk of cold-related injury and death in humans. While the initiation of cytoprotective mechanisms including the process of autophagy and the heat shock response (HSR) is crucial to cellular survival during periods of stress, age-related decrements in these systems may underlie cold-induced cellular vulnerability in older adults. Moreover, whether potential sex-related differences in autophagic regulation influence the human cold stress response remain unknown. We evaluated the effect of age and sex on mechanisms

BACKGROUND: The deep-sea snail Phymorhynchus buccinoides belongs to the genus Phymorhynchus (Neogastropoda: Raphitomidae), and it is a dominant specie in the cold seep habitat. As the environment of the cold seep is characterized by darkness, hypoxia and high concentrations of toxic substances such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), exploration of the diverse fauna living around cold seeps will help to uncover the adaptive mechanisms to this unique habitat. In the present study, a chromosome-level genome of P. buccinoides was constructed and a series of genomic and transcriptomic analyses were conduct

Cold is one of the most impactful abiotic stresses causing significant crop losses. Additionally, it is a major limiting factor, reducing cultivation areas, especially for tropical and subtropical species such as citrus. In this study, we conducted a physiological assessment of water balance, photosynthesis, fluorescence, and transcriptomic data, to further understand the response of aquaporins in the Valencia Delta Seedless variety grafted onto two rootstocks: Citrus macrophylla and Carrizo citrange, considered sensitive and tolerant rootstocks, respectively. After 6 weeks of exposure to 1°C

Cardiovascular disease (CAD) is a major global public health issue, with mortality rates being significantly impacted by cold temperatures. Stable and reliable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring in cold environments is crucial for early detection and treatment of CAD. However, existing skin sensor struggle to balance freeze resistance, breathability, flexibility, conductivity and adhesion at cold temperatures. Here, we introduce a solvent cross-linking strategy and an in situ transfer method to prepare ultrathin bioionic gels, featuring a freezing point below -80 °C and a thickness of only 12.

Cold seeps are deep-sea 'oases' with dense and dominant coexisting populations of large mussels and tubeworms under extreme environments. Under such natural source of high metal concentrations, the present study investigated the metal bioaccumulation and transfer with trophic positions in six benthic species by the isotopic δ15N and δ13C signatures in the active Haima cold seep, South China Sea. Comparing the isotopic signatures of bulk-tissue and amino acids by compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA-AA), we found that the bulk trophic (TPB) values in the benthos except mussels were signifi

INTRODUCTION: Cold agglutinin disease usually develops as a result of the production of a specific immunoglobulin M auto-antibody directed against the I/i and H antigens, precursors of the ABH and Lewis blood group substances, on red blood cells. Autoimmune and lymphoproliferative disorders, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and other infections can be associated with the production of cold agglutinins. In its classic presentation with haemolytic anaemia and Raynaud's syndrome, cold agglutinin disease is usually idiopathic. Several factors play a role in determining the ability of a cold agglutinin to ind

BACKGROUND: Cold is an important environmental limiting factor affecting plant yield and quality. Capsicum (chili pepper), a tropical and subtropical vegetable crop, is extremely sensitive to cold. Although H2S is an important signaling regulator in the responses of plant growth and development to abiotic stress, few studies have examined its effects on cold-sensitive capsicum varieties. Through biotechnology methods to enhance the cold resistance of peppers, to provide some reference for pepper breeding, investigated molecular regulation by H2S of responses to cold stress in cold-sensitive ca

The increasing frequency of extreme temperature events under climate change poses a growing threat to the stability of tropical sea cucumber aquaculture. To characterize the molecular responses of the tropical sea cucumber Stichopus monotuberculatus to acute temperature stress, juveniles were exposed for 96 h to 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C, followed by transcriptomic profiling of the intestine. By transcriptomic analysis, 2258, 634, 1618, and 2980 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at 15, 20, 30, and 35 °C compared to control, respectively. More DEGs were generally

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cold weather is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, but its impact on culprit plaque characteristics in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains unclear.
METHODS: This study included 647 STEMI patients who underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess untreated culprit lesions. Participants were grouped based on ambient temperature on the day of admission or mean ambient temperatures over the preceding 7-, 14-, 21-, and 28-day periods. Restricted cubic spline curves and regression models explored associations between ambi

A great variety of skin manifestations and the frequent occurrence of cold sensitivity, vascular symptoms with peripheral painful ulcerations, headache of migraine type, and muscle and joint symptoms are described in a series of 12 patients with an overlap syndrome compatible with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). The patients have been followed up for an average of 7 years. The peripheral symptoms on the extremities in particular were exacerbated by exposure to cold and caused much inconvenience and early disability for the patients. In addition to the symptoms generally connected with

This review aims to update our understanding of human cold adaptation. First, an overview of the thermoregulatory response to cold is provided, with some recent updates in human brown adipose tissue (BAT). Variation in BAT activity and multiorgan contributions to cold-induced thermogenesis were introduced. We found that individuals with less BAT activity rely more on shivering to compensate for less non-shivering thermogenesis (NST). The mechanisms of cold-induced vasoconstriction are summarized, including the role of arteriovenous anastomoses, adrenergic neural function, and inhibition of the

Search and rescue teams and Antarctic research groups use protective cold-water anti-exposure suits (AES) when cruising on Zodiacs. Extremity tourniquet (ET) self-application (SA) donned with AESs has not been previously studied. Our study therefore assessed the SA of 5 commercial ETs (CAT, OMNA, RATS, RMT, and SWAT-T) among 15 volunteers who donned these suits. Tourniquet's SA ability, ease of SA, tolerance, and tourniquet preference were measured. All ETs tested were self-applied to the upper extremity except for the SWAT, which was self-applied with the rest to the lower extremity. Ease- of

This study aims to quantify the associations between extreme temperatures, relative humidity, and mortality risk in patients with hematological diseases within a subtropical urban environment, and to identify vulnerable demographic subgroups. We conducted a time-series analysis using data from Chuzhou, China, spanning 2019 to 2024. Daily mortality counts for hematological diseases (ICD-10 codes C82-C95), meteorological variables (daily mean temperature and relative humidity), and air pollution data were analyzed. A Poisson generalized linear model combined with a distributed lag nonlinear mode

OBJECTIVES: Open water swimming competition occurs within a water temperature (Tw) range (World Aquatics Tw: 16-31 °C) where heat- (hyperthermia) and cold-related (hypothermia) medical events and race-dropouts regularly occur. These can be attributed to the thermodynamic properties of water and human thermoregulatory (Treg) maladaptations for submersion [modest deviations (±0.5-2 °C) in core temperature (Tc) can impair performance and health]. Additionally, little real-world knowledge regarding elite open water swimmer preparation [e.g., heat/cold acclimation/acclimatisation] for extreme envir

It is the purpose of this report to focus attention on the clinical features, diagnosis, and management of chronic pernio. Thirty-nine patients meeting our strict criteria for a diagnosis of chronic pernio were seen at the Mayo Clinic between 1976 and 1988 and form the basis for this report. Persons with upper extremity lesions only were excluded. Twenty-eight of the patients were female, 11 were male. Age at onset of symptoms ranged from 13 to 68 years of age, with symptoms appearing from 1 to 37 years following cold injury. The lesions were bilateral in 35 (90%) of patients and symmetric in
