Eye Injuries Epidemiology Description in a Working Population over 10 Years in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Several studies show a high percentage of eye injuries related to work compared to other origins. However, there are few studies that describe work-related eye injuries. METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, and longitudinal study that describes the characteristics of work-related eye injuries in a group of insured workers. Eye injuries were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and analyzed over 10 years (2008-2018). RESULTS: Keratitis and conjunctivitis were the most prevalent injuries (26,674 (53.1%) and 15,906 (31.6%)). Keratitis and c

Pediatric eye injuries due to nonpowder guns in the United States, 2002-2012.

PURPOSE: To identify epidemiologic trends in nonpowder gun-related pediatric eye injuries and to determine factors associated with severe injury requiring hospital admission. METHODS: US emergency department data on pediatric eye injuries between 2002 and 2012 were reviewed using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Literature review was conducted to determine trends in visual outcomes after treatment and use of eye protection. RESULTS: In 2012 roughly 3,161 children were treated in US emergency departments for nonpowder gun-related eye injuries. Since 2010 rates of severe non

A case-crossover study on transient risk factors of work-related eye injuries.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate modifiable risk and preventive factors of work-related eye injuries. METHODS: A case-crossover study conducted to explore the associations between transient risk factors and work-related eye injuries. Patients seen at seven medical centres in Taiwan with work-related eye injuries over a 4-year period were enrolled in the study. Clinical information was collected from medical charts and detailed information on exposure to eight potentially modifiable factors during the 60 minutes prior to the occurrence of each injury, as well as during the same time interval on the

Pediatric eye injuries related to consumer products in the United States, 1997-2006.

This study examines which consumer products are most commonly associated with pediatric eye injuries that are treated in emergency departments in the United States. The results demonstrate that, overall, boys experienced proportionally more consumer product-related eye injuries than girls, but eye injuries from specific product categories are more likely to be associated with one sex than the other. Age-specific patterns also revealed that certain product categories are more likely to be associated with eye injuries among different age groups. These findings are salient because children experi

OBJECTIVE: Eye injury in the workplace is common worldwide. This study proposed to explore both risk and preventive factors re eye injuries in Hong Kong. DESIGN: Case-control study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 239 work-related eye injury patients, and 253 subjects without a history of any eye injury as controls. METHODS: Patients with all incident cases of work-related eye injuries attending the ophthalmology clinics of 3 major public hospitals in Hong Kong during the first 3 months of 2000 were invited to participate. [Methods of comprehensive multifunctional examination of patients with penetrating fragmentation injuries of eye].

The study was aimed at validating the efficacy of all available diagnostic methods for the detection and removal of foreign bodies in the eyes. A total of 563 patients with penetrating fragmentation injuries to the eyes were observed. The advantages and drawbacks of each method for the diagnosis of intraocular foreign bodies are analyzed and causes of differences in the localization of a fragment by different methods discussed. The authors consider that these discrepancies are caused by 1) use of standard schematic size during x-ray localization of a fragment without amendment for the true siz

Vitrectomy in penetrating eye injury. Results of a controlled trial of vitrectomy in an experimental posterior penetrating eye injury in the rhesus monkey.

A controlled trial of pars plana vitrectomy for posterior penetrating eye injury was done in rhesus monkeys. After standard injury, each eye was allocated randomly into a treatment or control group. Treatment groups (ten eyes each) had vitrectomy at 1, 14, or 70 days after injury. The control group had 15 eyes. The same techniques were employed as in human eyes. Surgical objectives were lensectomy, then complete posterior vitrectomy and excision of the anterior vitreous to within 1 or 2 mm of the surface of the peripheral retina and pars plana. Results from this controlled trial provide strong

Biomechanism of resistance to retinal injury in woodpecker's eyes.

Retinal injury is the most common ocular impairment associated with shaken baby syndrome (SBS), which could lead to vision loss and blindness. However, a woodpecker does not develop retinal hemorrhages or detachment even at a high acceleration of 1,000×g during pecking. To understand the mechanism of retinal injury and its resistance strategy, we put insight into the special ability of the woodpecker to protect the retina against damage under acceleration-deceleration impact. In this study, the structural and mechanical differences on the eyes of the woodpecker and human were analyzed quantita

Fishhook Injury of the Anterior Chamber Angle of the Eye.

A 36-year-old man presented with a corneal penetrating fishhook injury with the tip embedded in the inferior anterior chamber angle of the eye. Complete removal was achieved with extension of the wound at the limbus using the "cut-out" technique. Intraocular fishhook injuries are common in fishing communities and effective surgical removal may involve modified techniques previously described for skin or mucosal tissue.

Simultaneous injuries to both eyes in traffic accidents.

BACKGROUND: In traffic accidents, eye injuries occur as isolated or with polytrauma. They may involve just one eye, but simultaneous injuries to both eyes do happen occasionally. The aim of our paper was to reveal the risk factors, in an effort to reduce the number of such accidents and to prevent bilateral ocular damage. METHODS: All patients hospitalized at the Clinic of Eye Diseases, Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade, due to traffic accidents with bilateral eye injuries in a period of 9 years from the beginning of 2000 to the end of 2008 were analyzed. RESULTS: In this 9-year period, a

Eye and visual function in traumatic brain injury.

Combat blast is an important cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the Department of Veterans Affairs polytrauma population, whereas common causes of TBI in the civilian sector include motor vehicle accidents and falls. Known visual consequences of civilian TBI include compromised visual acuity, visual fields, and oculomotor function. The visual consequences of TBI related to blast remain largely unknown. Blast injury may include open globe (eye) injury, which is usually detected and managed early in the rehabilitation journey. The incidence, locations, and types of ocular damage in eyes wi

Eye injury as a result of coat toggle trauma.

PURPOSE: To report the severity of ocular injury in three adults with blunt ocular trauma resulting from elastic corded coat toggles. DESIGN: Observational case series. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the case records of all patients (n=3) with blunt ocular trauma secondary to elastic corded coat toggles that presented to our department. RESULTS: Injuries included traumatic hyphaema, cataract, angle recession, vitreous haemorrhage and retinal tears. CONCLUSIONS: Significant ocular injury can result from elasticated coat toggles. The general ophthalmologist should be aware of this new

A proactive treatment approach for eyes with perforating injury.

BACKGROUND: Perforating injuries continue to have a poor prognosis with less than two-thirds of eyes having at least ambulatory final vision, due to proliferation originating from the exit wound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a new, proactive treatment method, which is applicable in most eyes with perforating trauma. The strategy involves limited, indirect ophthalmoscopic vitrectomy during the primary repair; heavy topical corticosteroid therapy postoperatively; and complete vitrectomy on day 3, including prophylactic retinectomy around the exit wound, evacuation of subretinal blood, la
