EMDR is an effective treatment for people diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. The traditional technique of EMDR combines the activation of distressing reminders with guided rhythmic eye movements. The present article reviews the current state of research on the neurobiological correlates of the eye movements occurring during EMDR. The distinction between saccades and smooth pursuit eye movements allows for detailed analyses of ocular motor connections with cerebral networks of attention, memory and emotion. Possible consequences for research and clinical practice with EMDR are discus

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is pervasive, with approximately 50% of adolescents experiencing at least one potentially traumatic event before adulthood. Eight percent to 33% of potentially traumatic event-exposed adolescents develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can cause extreme suffering and coincides with numerous comorbid illnesses and high-risk behaviors. PTSD can be effectively treated in adolescents through weekly sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing or trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Despite the availability of these treatments, numerous

Clinical treatment guidelines consistently recommend cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The efficacy of these interventions among sexual- and/or gender-minoritized (SGM) individuals has not been thoroughly investigated within randomized clinical trials (RCTs), despite known elevations in exposure to potentially traumatic events and PTSD symptoms relative to cisgender heterosexual individuals. We conducted a systematic literature review to examine the frequency with which

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychological therapy used to treat trauma. While trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) is often used, EMDR has potential for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research has focused on adult populations, with limited evidence for children and adolescents available. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of EMDR for treating or preventing PTSD in children and adolescents. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were identified through a comprehensive search of s

BACKGROUND: Trauma-focused treatment is known to be demanding, resulting in considerable drop-out rates. Intensive trauma treatment programs for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have demonstrated significant and sustained results and appear to be better tolerated. However, how patients experience this treatment has been scarcely explored through qualitative studies, and only in the weeks following the end of treatment. The longer-term effects and experiences of the treatment remain under-investigated.
OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to explore participants' experiences of an intensive

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental health issues in young people is staggering, yet many face barriers in accessing professional help. These barriers, including stigma and long waiting lists, can prevent those in need from receiving the support they require. Teletherapy, which utilizes technology to connect individuals with mental health professionals, is emerging as a promising solution to overcome these obstacles. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of online therapy globally, with therapists swiftly transitioning to digital platforms. The effectiveness of online therapy in

Background: Psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents and young adults are hampered by high dropout rates. Looking at the results from adult treatments, short, intensive, outpatient treatment programmes may offer a promising alternative, but it has yet to be tested in this young population. Objective: To assess the results of a six-day intensive outpatient trauma-focused treatment programme for young individuals (12-25 years) with PTSD. The treatment combined prolonged exposure and EMDR therapy, supplemented with physical activity and

BACKGROUND: The Syrian conflict has been ongoing since 2011. Practical and scalable solutions are urgently needed to meet an increase in need for specialised psychological support for post-traumatic stress disorder given limited availability of clinicians. Training forcibly displaced Syrians with a mental health background to remotely deliver specialised interventions increases the availability of evidence based psychological support. Little is known about the effectiveness of online therapy for forcibly displaced Syrian women provided by forcibly displaced Syrian women therapists.

Background: Evidence-based trauma interventions are predominantly developed in and for WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) populations. In non-Western higher education settings, implementing these therapies is heavily hindered by severe shortages of mental health professionals and culturally rooted stigma against authority figures. Exploring scalable, context-sensitive models like task-sharing is crucial for global mental health equity. Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of a peer-delivered integrated intervention - combining Eye Movem

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Imaginal Exposure (IE), and Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) are effective trauma-focused interventions. However, concerns persist that they may impair the accuracy of memories addressed in treatment. This laboratory study tested whether a single session of EMDR, IE, or ImRs affects forced-choice recognition in healthy adults. Two hundred sixty-five participants underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and received EMDR, IE, ImRs, or no intervention (NIC) the following day. One week later, memory for the TSST was assessed using a forced-choi

Objective: Young people with post-traumatic stress disorder experience difficulties in social and interpersonal domains. We examined whether the best-evidenced treatments of PTSD for children and young people (Trauma-focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing; aged 5-25) improve social or interpersonal factors in randomised controlled trials, compared to a comparator condition.Method: The review was preregistered on PROSPERO (CRD42023455615; 18th August 2023). BACKGROUND: While treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in refugees is generally effective, many refugees remain symptomatic after treatment. Coping styles could be relevant to PTSD treatment response and as such may be a potential focus of PTSD treatment.
AIMS: The study aims to examine 1) if baseline coping styles are related to treatment response after EMDR therapy or stabilization, and 2) if coping styles change during these treatments.
METHOD: Seventy-two refugees with PTSD were randomly allocated to 12 hours of EMDR therapy or stabilization. A coping questionnaire (COPE-eas

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not only associated with fear but also with other emotions. The present study aimed to examine if changes in shame, guilt, anger, and disgust predicted changes in PTSD symptoms during treatment, while also testing if PTSD symptoms, in turn, predicted changes in these emotions.
METHODS: Participants (N = 155) with childhood-related PTSD received a maximum of 12 sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing or imagery rescripting. The data was analyzed using Granger causality models across 12 treatment sessions and 6

BACKGROUND: With few RCTs having compared active treatments for paediatric PTSD, little is known about whether or which baseline (i.e. pre-randomization) variables predict or moderate outcomes in the evaluated treatments.
OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors and moderators of paediatric PTSD outcomes for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Cognitive Behavioural Writing Therapy (CBWT).
METHOD: Data were obtained as part of a multi-centre, randomized controlled trial of up to six sessions (up to 45 minutes each) of either EMDR therapy, CBWT, or wait-list, involving 10

BACKGROUND: 'Women with eating disorders (EDs) and a history of childhood maltreatment (CM) tend to have more psychiatric comorbidities including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD (CPTSD) and a worse prognosis than women with EDs without CM. Yet research on treatment of comorbidity of EDs and PTSD/CPTSD symptoms due to CM is scarce.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the effectiveness of a day program for women with EDs and CM history on symptoms of EDs, PTSD, CPTSD and dissociation.

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review summarizes the recommendations related to psychosocial interventions for anxiety disorders included in existing guidelines and compares their differences.
METHODS: Computer-based searches were conducted to identify relevant guidelines on psychosocial interventions for anxiety disorders from domestic and international guideline websites, professional association websites, and other relevant databases. The guidelines' quality was evaluated using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool.
RESULTS: Fourteen guidelines from nin

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders significantly reduce patients' quality of life. Current pharmacological treatments, primarily benzodiazepines and antidepressants, are associated with numerous side effects. Consequently, there is a continual search for alternative methods to traditional therapies that are less burdensome for patients and broaden their therapeutic options. Our objective was to determine the role of selected alternative methods in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
METHODS: In this review, we examined recent evidence on alternative treatments for anxiety disorders, including phys

Research has shown that the impact of traumatic events and circumstances on individuals is cumulative and potentially has a wide range of harmful consequences, including negative consequences on mental health. One such consequence is the development of a personality disorder, a persistent mental condition characterized by a pronounced pattern of difficulties in impulse control, emotional regulation, cognitive functions, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. A wide array of studies indicates that the personal history of individuals with a personality disorder is often marked by exposure

INTRODUCTION: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are commonly observed in migrants. Although Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be helpful to treat these diseases, it remains difficult to propose EMDR as an individual intervention in help-seeking migrants. Group EMDR, like Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP), which was built around the 8 phases of the original EMDR protocol, could offer an effective treatment to a large number of people. It may also be more resource-efficient to provide psychiatric care to migrants.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an elective therapy to treat people with post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). In line with the personalization of therapeutic strategies, through this pilot study, we assessed in people suffering from the effects of trauma the feasibility, safety, acceptance, and efficacy of EMDR enriched with sound stimulation (by administering neutral sounds synchronized with the guided bilateral alternating stimulation of the gaze) and musical reward (musical listening based on the patients' predispo
