Risk of second cancer after lymphohematopoietic neoplasm.

People living with lymphohematopoietic neoplasms (LHNs) are known to have increased risks of second cancer; however, the incidence of second cancers after LHNs has not been studied extensively in Australia. The Australian Cancer Database was used to analyze site-specific risk of second primary cancer after LHNs in 127,707 patients diagnosed between 1983 and 2005. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated using population rates. Overall, patients with an LHN had nearly twice the risk of developing a second cancer compared to the Australian population. Among 40,321 patients with non-H

Purtscher-Like Retinopathy Secondary to an Appendiceal Neuroendocrine Neoplasm Complicated by a Periappendiceal Abscess.

Purtscher-like retinopathy (PLR) is a rare retinal microvasculopathy that is induced by non-traumatic systemic illnesses. We describe the case of a woman in her 70s who was diagnosed with PLR, ultimately linked to an appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasm (ANEN) complicated by a periappendiceal abscess. The patient presented with sudden, unilateral, painless visual impairment. Initial examination revealed Purtscher flecken (PF) and cotton-wool spots (CWS) in the right eye, with corresponding hyperreflectivity and swelling of the inner retinal layers on optical coherence tomography (OCT). Systemic

[Infectious agents in ocular adnexal tumours].

In recent years, infectious agents have been increasingly recognised as an important pathogenetic factor for various malignant tumours of the ocular adnexa. Many of these viruses and bacteria affect the cell cycle and physiological apoptosis. Ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL), especially extranodal marginal cell lymphoma, is associated with Chlamydophila psittaci and Helicobacter pylori in certain geographic regions. Epstein-Barr virus seems to play a role in the natural killer/T-cell lymphoma subtype of the orbit, as has long been described for Burkitt lymphoma. Bacteria seem to induce reactive l

Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma in a reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).

An 8-year-old female adult reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of Madrid for evaluation of a conjunctival mass on the left eye which had been present for about 2 months. A surgical excision was performed and biopsy material submitted for light microscopic evaluation which confirmed the diagnosis of conjuctival squamous cell carcinoma. Nuclear p53 immunolabeling was found in 52% of the neoplastic cells. Follow-up examination at 12 months postsurgery did not reveal recurrence of this neoplasm. Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma has not been reported pr

Right atrial B-cell lymphoma in a patient with ocular melanoma.

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) is defined as a non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving only the heart or pericardium. PCL is extremely rare and often misdiagnosed. We report the case of a healthy 53-year-old male who originally presented with blurred vision secondary to a right intraocular mass. Enucleation of the eye confirmed a ciliary body melanoma and, upon further investigation, the patient was discovered to have a mass in the right atrium suspicious for a myxoma. However, resection of the atrial mass revealed a low-grade B-cell PCL. The occurrence of PCL in an immunocompetent patient being invest

[Breast cancer and B cell malignant lymphoma associated with Sjögren'ssyndrome--a case report and review of literature in Japan].

It is well known that some patients with Sjögren's syndrome develop lymphoproliferative disorders. Approximately 60 cases of Sjögren's syndrome associated with malignant lymphoma, predominantly of B cell origin, have been reported in Japan. On the other hand, fourteen cases of non lymphoid malignant neoplasm, including six of thyroid cancer and four of gastric cancer, have been recently presented in Japanese literature. However, cases of double malignant neoplasms in Sjögren's syndrome are very rare. We reported a case of Sjögren's syndrome associated with breast cancer and B cell malignant ly

Macular Hemorrhage as the First Manifestation of Leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant neoplasm of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of precursor cells of B- or T-lymphocyte lineage. Usually, the disease arises because of spontaneous mutations in bone marrow cells. Risk factors include genetic predisposition, exposure to ionizing radiation, prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and certain environmental factors. Clinical manifestations may include recurrent infections, anemia, and an increased tendency toward bleeding and stroke. A 12-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with a

Unilateral Subhyaloid Hemorrhage as a Presenting Sign of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

BACKGROUND Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a malignant myeloproliferative neoplasm of pluripotent stem cell origin. Ophthalmic manifestation as an initial presentation in cases of CML is extremely rare. Frequently, ocular lesions in CML are asymptomatic. However, vitreous or foveal involvement can result in a symptomatic visual loss and earlier presentation. Here, we report a rare case of monocular vision loss due to subhyaloid hemorrhage in a case of CML. CASE REPORT A 19-year-old healthy woman presented to the Emergency Department with sudden painless decrease in vision in her left eye

Eye movement abnormalities in neurodegenerative langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare inflammatory myeloid neoplasm characterized by proliferation of tumor histiocytes that involves multiple organs including central nervous system. The physiopathologic process underlying degenerative neuro-LCH (i.e., DN-LCH) remains imperfectly settled. Since the main clinical features of DN-LCH are cerebellar ataxia and dysexecutive syndrome, eye movements might be disrupted and may help in disease diagnosis and monitoring. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of twenty DN-LCH patients investigated using eye movement recording (EMR) in o

Wide-Excision Choice in Orbital Rhabdomyosarcoma on an 8-Year-Old Patient in a Low-Resource Setting: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common neoplasm of skeletal myoblast-like cells in children aged 5-8 years. It typically occurs in the head, neck region, genitourinary tract, retroperitoneum, and extremities. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy complained of a lump under his left eye that he had felt for the past 4 years. Initially small, it gradually grew larger although there were no accompanying symptoms of redness, pain, itching, or eye movement disorders, and no history of trauma. Visual acuity in the left eye was measured at 6/15, with pinhole correction improving to 6/6, wh

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is an extremely rare malignant cutaneous tumour that predominantly affects elderly Caucasian individuals, most commonly involving the head and neck region. Its most characteristic feature is a biphasic pattern, combining superficial squamous differentiation with deeper ductal differentiation. We report the case of a 75-year-old woman who presented with a lesion at the lateral canthus of the left eye. Histological examination revealed a malignant adnexal neoplasm with both squamous and ductal differentiation, extending from the epidermis into the subcuta

Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma Presenting as a Pseudo Veno-Lymphatic Malformation.

A 41-year-old woman presented with several days of right eye pain and blurred vision. Examination and radiologic workup were consistent with a veno-lymphatic malformation, including demonstration of cystic fluid-fluid levels on imaging. Histopathology supported the presence of cystic spaces but revealed the final diagnosis of lacrimal epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, a rare neoplasm typically associated with the salivary gland. This represents the first reported case of lacrimal epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma presenting with pain and evidence of intralesional cysts on radiographic and h

Schwannoma of the ciliary body treated by block excision.

A 26-year-old man developed a non-pigmented ciliary body tumour of his right eye. A 7 mm block excision and tectonic corneoscleral graft were performed. The excised tissue was studied using histopathological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic techniques. The tumour revealed characteristic features of a Schwann cell neoplasm including Antoni A and B patterns, acid mucopolysaccharides, S-100, and vimentin positivity, and--by electron microscopy--Luse bodies. It was classified as a schwannoma. Although rare, schwannoma should be included in the clinical differential diagnosis of non-p
