Magnitude Comparisons, Number Knowledge and Calculation in VeryPreterm Children and Children With Specific Learning Disability: A Cross-Population Study Using Eye-Tracking.

Difficulties in mathematics have been described in very preterm children, but their origins are not well understood and may differ from other populations with specific learning disability. Very preterm children, children with learning disability, and typically developing children were compared in mathematics skills, using standardized tools, experimental tasks, and eye-tracker measures. We assessed symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude comparisons, number knowledge, calculation, as well as cognitive skills of 103 Italian-speaking fourth and fifth graders. Compared to typically developing peers, v

Universal patterns in eye movements across lines of text.

This study examines cross-linguistic patterns of eye movements before, during, and after return sweeps-the saccades that move readers' gaze from one line of text to the next. Using data from 28 language samples representing 22 languages and multiple writing systems from the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus project, we tested whether spatial and temporal characteristics of interline transitions reflect universal oculomotor mechanisms or language-specific factors. Results show that extreme fixations cover about 80% of each line across all languages, and fixation durations follow consistent posit

Abnormal eye movement patterns in adolescent and early adulthood MDD patients with and without psychotic symptoms: A multi-paradigm feature-based study.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) heterogeneity is frequently overlooked in current diagnostic approaches, despite evidence that certain subtypes, particularly MDD with psychotic symptoms (MDDwP), are associated with poorer prognoses. Eye movement assessment has demonstrated promise as a potential biomarker for psychiatric disorders; however, research into eye movement patterns in MDD with and without psychotic features is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the potential value of eye movement as a biomarker for MDD. METHODS: This study enrolled 69 participants, including 15 pat

Lightweight Geometric Framework for High-Precision 3D Gaze Tracking Based on Infrared Image Processing.

Head-mounted eye-tracking systems play a critical role in virtual reality, human-computer interaction, and clinical applications, yet achieving both high angular accuracy and precise 3D gaze position estimation with low-cost hardware remains challenging. This paper proposes a lightweight, training-free geometric 3D gaze tracking framework for binocular 3D gaze tracking using consumer-grade hardware, which leverages stereo geometric triangulation and a simplified physiological eye model to achieve robust 3D gaze estimation, requiring only standard infrared cameras and dichroic mirrors without a

Exploring the impact of unpredictability of household resources on infant attention.

Early environmental unpredictability has been linked to variation in cognitive and socioemotional development, yet its role in shaping foundational attentional processes during infancy remains poorly understood. The present study examined whether unpredictability in household resources is associated with individual differences in visual attention during the first year of life. A sociodemographically diverse sample of 160 infants aged 3-12 months completed a remotely administered free-viewing visual attention task. Infant eye-gaze behavior was assessed using webcam-based eye-tracking, yielding

Investigating How Brain Stimulation Mitigates Motion Sickness Using Spatiotemporal Nystagmus Parameters Captured in VR.

Mitigating motion sickness with non-invasive cortical vestibular brain stimulation (vBS) is promising because it does not require redesigning VR content or altering the motion profile of a moving platform. Instead, it aims to enhance individuals' intrinsic resistance to motion sickness. However, the mechanism underlying its online efficacy remains unclear (Here, "online efficacy" means the observed motion sickness reduction during vBS not before or after vBS). Motivated by lower motion sickness susceptibility observed in congenital nystagmus patients, we hypothesized that reductions in motion

Cortico-Ocular Coupling Analysis for Developmental and Behavioral Disorders: A Review.

Developmental and behavioral disorders (DBD) have a significant impact on children's neurological activity and behavioral performance. Early diagnosis and treatment are known to be beneficial for improving DBD outcomes, yet existing unimodal neurophysiological assessment tools for DBD yield significant heterogeneity in results, highlighting the urgent need for exploring novel assessment tools. Cortico-ocular coupling (COC) refers to the information interaction between the cerebral cortex and eyes, and COC analysis is a technique for quantitatively measuring the correlation of neural oscillatio

A retinal detachment based strabismus detection through FEDCNN.

Ocular strabismus, a common condition in the present generation is an absolute risk factor for amblyopia and blinding premorbid visual loss. Despite the availability of new optometry tools with eye-tracking data, the issues persist in attaining accuracy and reliability in diagnosing strabismus. These two concerns are specifically accommodated in this study by the proposed novel approach that involves CNNs with eye-tracking datasets from subjects. The presented work aims to improve the accuracy of diagnostics in ophthalmology utilizing the integration of the further proposed algorithms into an

The use of machine learning to understand the role of visual attention in multi-attribute choice.

Whether eye movements (as a measure of visual attention) contribute to the understanding of how multi-attribute decisions are made, is still a matter of debate. In this study, we show how machine learning methods can be used to separate the effects of the information presented, eye movement patterns, and attention to specific information. We also show how to deal with data from a relatively small sample of participants, often found in eye tracking studies that require in-lab testing. We make use of a dataset of 30 females who decided whether or not to accept screening for Chlamydia in 21 diffe

An eye-tracking-based Stroop test: an efficient method for evaluating frontal lobe function.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing attention and frontal lobe function is essential for diagnosing dementia. The Stroop test is widely used for these purposes, and its validity and reliability have been verified. Nevertheless, test-related burdens and procedural complexity have prevented their use as a screening tool. We developed a novel Stroop test using eye-tracking technology and evaluated its validity and utility in a clinical setting. METHODS: The study included 97 older adults at a memory clinic. Participants completed both the eye-tracking-based and conventional paper-based Stroop tests, along w

Contextual Facilitation Effect on EFL Learners' Reflexive Anaphora Resolution: Evidence from Eye Movements.

Guided by cue-based retrieval theory, this study investigates Chinese EFL learners' reflexive anaphora resolution, focusing on whether gender information is utilized during online processing and whether prior discourse context supports this process under different levels of syntactic demand. Two eye-tracking experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 showed that learners exhibited early sensitivity to antecedent-reflexive gender mismatch when antecedent-related gender information was supported by prior discourse, although reading patterns did not differ reliably between strong- and weak-context

Eye-tracking emotional responses and moral decisions in bilingual contexts.

Research suggests that moral decision-making is influenced by whether individuals use their first language (L1) or second language (L2). However, little is known about how bilinguals allocate their attention when making moral choices. The present study addressed this gap. We collected data from 89 Chinese-English bilinguals, who responded to five moral dilemmas in their L1 or L2 and indicated the emotional intensity they experienced while their eye movements were recorded. These data were analysed using mixed-effects linear and logistic regression models. The results revealed that, in L1, an i

Exploring early-stage orienting behavior using an eye tracker for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder classification.

Exploring early-stage orienting behavior is essential for elucidating the behavioral mechanisms underlying attentional shifts in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, traditional tasks lacking eye-tracking data often obscure these mechanisms. This study investigates low-level attentional shifting in ADHD using a simplified gaze-cueing task and explores classification markers via eye movement. Eye-tracking data were analyzed from 27 typically developing children and 19 children diagnosed with ADHD. We constructed a logistic regression model for classification purposes. Eye m

Inhibition of return in schizophrenic patients: Impaired reorientation, facilitation by stimuli, or both? An eye-movement based study.

This study aimed to explore the mechanisms underlying impaired inhibition of return (IOR) in schizophrenia (SZ) patients, using a cue-target paradigm with eye-tracking experiments. Forty-four SZ patients and thirty healthy controls (HC) completed symptom assessments, single-cue, and double-cue eye-tracking tasks. Hidden Markov Models (HMM) were employed to analyze gaze trajectories on emotional faces. In the single-cue task, SZ patients showed a cue facilitation effect at 300 ms (t = -3.572, P = 0.001) and 600 ms (t = -3.539, P = 0.001). In the double-cue task, they exhibited an IOR effect at

Metacognition and the dual function of social gaze.

While the movement of one's eyes to extract information from the visual environment often occurs without conscious reflection, this may not be true when one's eyes are also a signal of information to others, such as in a social interaction. Metacognitive monitoring of one's ability to balance the use of gaze to both receive and send information has not been empirically tested. The present study investigated this issue by eye-tracking participants during a novel hide-and-seek paradigm. Hiders selected boxes on a computer display with the goal of cooperating with or deceiving a future seeker. Di

The WHO Said What? Interaction of Source Credibility and Readers' Prior Beliefs in the Reading of Social-Media Posts.

Evaluating sources is an essential skill in our misinformation-riddled media environment. However, previous studies suggest that people tend not to engage with source information during reading, and very little research exists on how source credibility and readers' beliefs interact on social media. We examined how source credibility and prior beliefs affect reading social-media posts. Finnish university students (N = 83) first filled out a questionnaire measuring beliefs on eight controversial topics and then read 76 mock-up tweets on these topics while their eye movements were recorded. The s

Children Sustain Their Attention on Spatial Scenes When Planning to Describe Spatial Relations Multimodally in Speech and Gesture.

How do children allocate visual attention to scenes as they prepare to describe them multimodally in speech and co-speech gesture? In an eye-tracking study, Turkish-speaking 8-year-old children viewed four-picture displays depicting the same two objects in different spatial relations as they prepared to describe target pictures depicting left-right relations. Children's visual attention was sustained on the target picture when they were planning descriptions that expressed the spatial relation multimodally in speech and gesture, but not unimodally in speech only. This pattern persisted regardl

Gaze patterns reveal attention-based modulation of lure discrimination.

The ability to differentiate highly overlapping stimuli or experiences in memory (and the behavioral lure discrimination outcomes that reflect this ability) has traditionally been studied as a mnemonic process. However, the contribution of goal-directed attentional processes, involved in a similar interference resolution function, has yet to be examined. Using eye-tracking, we first show that eye movements can be used as a sensitive measure of behavioral lure discrimination, based on performance on the widely used Mnemonic Similarity Task (Experiment 1). We then show in three separate experime

Prior knowledge of normal ECGs enhances accuracy in ECG interpretation among medical students.

Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are frequently misdiagnosed, with potentially serious consequences, yet evidence for effective teaching strategies remains limited. Eye-tracking offers insight into the perceptual processes behind accurate interpretation. We conducted an eye-tracking study among medical students to assess whether priming with normal ECGs improves diagnostic accuracy. We hypothesized that participants viewing normal ECGs before interpreting unknown ECGs would perform more accurately. This between-subjects priming study presented students with one of three image types before an ECG task
