Cohort Profile: The Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH).

The Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH) is one of very few long-standing, publicly available longitudinal cohort studies in a sub-Saharan African (SSA) context. It provides a rare record of more than a decade of demographic, socioeconomic and health conditions in one of the world's poorest countries. The MLSFH was initially established in 1998 to study social network influences on fertility behaviours and HIV risk perceptions, and over time the focus of the study expanded to include health, sexual behaviours, intergenerational relations and family/household dynamics. Cultural responses to health among Mexican American women and their families.

Based on an in-depth analysis of current empirical research, this article presents a framework for understanding the cultural experience of the Mexican American population and presents implications for innovative health promotion practices with women and their families. The framework sheds light on the complex ways in which individuals from this population integrate their cultural values in their everyday responses to health. Three patterns emerge: (a) cultural expectations and beliefs can be shared by and work complementarily in the family and the larger social context; (b) cultural beliefs c

The role of law in public health: the case of family planning in the Philippines.

Compared to neighboring countries, the Philippines has high fertility rates and a low prevalence of modern-method contraception use. The Philippine government faces political and cultural barriers to addressing family planning needs, but also legal barriers erected by its own policies. We conducted a review of laws and policies relating to family planning in the Philippines in order to examine how the law may facilitate or constrain service provision. The methodology consisted of three phases. First, we collected and analyzed laws and regulations relating to the delivery of family planning ser

An empirically derived typology of families: II. Relationships with adolescent health.

In this report from the California Family Health Project, we describe the relationship between an empirically derived family typology based on parent data, and the self-reported health and well-being of 151 adolescent offspring. The typology is comprised of four family types: Balanced, Traditional, Disconnected, and Emotionally Strained. Three adolescent health indices were constructed from 13 self-reported health variables using principal components and multidimensional scaling analyses: Physical Health, Emotional Health, and Alcohol Abstinence. ANOVA indicated that Physical Health was signif

Homeless families and their children's health problems. A Utah urban experience.

Descriptive information was obtained about homeless families in the Intermountain West and their children's health care needs were defined to help professionals develop programs tailored to meet the unique needs of this population. We collected data during the well-child visits of 306 children in 161 families living at the Travelers Aid Society family shelter. The results reveal 2 types of homeless families, episodic and long term. Each requires different levels of assistance. This study's profile of mobile, predominantly white, 2-parent families with few children (mean of 1.2) differs conside

A Booklet to Promote Psychological Health in New Families Affected by Craniosynostosis.

Recent research indicates that parents of children with craniosynostosis may be at risk of emotional distress. Yet, parents may not be accessing the support they need to cope with common challenges. The aim of this project was to develop a research-informed booklet to promote psychological health in new families, and to assess acceptability of the booklet within the craniosynostosis community. The first draft was designed in close collaboration with leading UK charity Headlines Craniofacial Support 5 parent representatives, and 3 specialist clinical psychologists via online focus groups. The intersection of extreme poverty and familial mental health in the United States.

Approximately 22% of children in the United States live in poverty, with high rates of caregiver depression and child disruptive behavior disorders (DBD). The current study aims to explore the relationships between living in extreme poverty and both child and parent mental health. Data are comprised of findings from the first effectiveness study of the 4Rs and 2Ss intervention, in addition to preliminary data from an implementation study currently underway (n = 484). Families with an annual income of less than $9,999 reported significantly greater child DBD scores and prevalence of clinically

Multiproblem Families Referred to Youth Mental Health: What's in a Name?

The purpose of this study was threefold, namely (1) to differentiate between multiproblem families and control families on characteristics and processes within the family based on a theoretical framework, (2) to identify multiproblem families by establishing cut-off scores on various questionnaires, and (3) to categorize multiproblem families into subtypes by cluster analyses. Various questionnaires were administered to multiproblem families (n = 85) and control families (n = 150). Results showed that what we propose to refer to as multiproblem families present a broad range of problems on sev

In-work tax credits for families and their impact on health status in adults.

BACKGROUND: By improving two social determinants of health (poverty and unemployment) in low- and middle-income families on or at risk of welfare, in-work tax credit for families (IWTC) interventions could impact health status and outcomes in adults. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of IWTCs on health outcomes in working-age adults (18 to 64 years). SEARCH METHODS: We searched 16 electronic academic databases, including the Cochrane Public Health Group Specialised Register, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (The Cochrane Library 2012, Issue 7), MEDLINE and EMBASE, as well as six grey

Risk factors and health promotion in families of patients with breast cancer.

Women with a family history of breast cancer have an increased risk of developing the disease. Women identified as "high risk" for developing breast cancer have been shown to exhibit increased levels of psychological distress and anxiety related to breast cancer. Oncology nurses can address this barrier and others, such as altered risk perception and lack of physician recommendation for screening. Oncology nurses also can identify high-risk families that may be candidates for genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility, provide comprehensive teaching about breast self-examination (BSE), a

An empirically derived typology of families: I. Relationships with adult health.

In this report we describe the development and partial validation of an empirically derived typology of families based on 11 family variable composites derived from the California Family Health Project. Our goal was to use the typology to condense and integrate the findings from previous analyses of a large group of family variables and to account for differences in the self-reported health of adult family members. Exploratory and confirmatory cluster analyses conducted separately by gender classified 97% of the sample into four parallel types for husbands and wives: Balanced, Traditional, Dis

Breast Cancer Family History and Behavioral Health Intentions: An Esteem-Relevant Mechanism Informed by the Terror Management Health Model.

The terror management health model (TMHM) offers a framework to investigate how concerns about mortality can motivate health-related behaviors through actions that bolster self-esteem. This framework may be especially useful for examining how a family history of breast cancer influences preventative breast health behaviors. Women with no family history, a family history where a family member survived breast cancer, and those who lost a family member to the disease were recruited to participate in one of two preregistered online studies. Participants completed measures of perceived susceptibili
