Assessing the impact of socio-demographics and farming activity on ward-level mortality patterns using farm and population decennial censuses.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Farmers experience a specific set of unique dangers, which increases their risk of mortality compared with any other occupation. This study hypothesised that Northern Ireland's (NIs) agriculturally saturated Wards have a higher risk of mortality compared against non-agriculturally based Wards. DESIGN: The Population Census and Farm Census information were downloaded from the Northern Ireland Neighbourhood Service (NINIS) online depository to compile three mortality-based data sets (2001, 2011, pooled data sets). Assessing the impact of socio-demographics and farmin

Assessing farm biosecurity and farmers' knowledge and practices concerning antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in poultry and pig farms in Southern Togo.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Several factors contribute to the unusual incidence of antibiotic resistance, which is now a primary public health concern. However, failure in managing preventive and therapeutic antibiotic use on farms is one of the most crucial factors. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the biosecurity of farms, farmers' competence, and practices related to antibiotics and their resistance in poultry and pig rearing in Togo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a cross-sectional survey, 121 commercial poultry farmers and 97 commercial pig farmers were questioned to evaluate the biosecur

Comparing Farm Biosecurity and Antimicrobial Use in High-Antimicrobial-Consuming Broiler and Pig Farms in the Belgian-Dutch Border Region.

As antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide problem, threatening both livestock and public health, understanding the drivers for resistance in different settings and countries is essential. Therefore, 30 pig and 30 poultry farms with country-specific high antimicrobial use (AMU) were recruited in the Belgian-Dutch border region. Information regarding production parameters, farm characteristics, biosecurity, and AMU was collected. On average, more biosecurity measures were implemented on Dutch farms, compared to Belgian farms in both animal species. In addition, more opportunities were found to

The use of the "highest priority critically important antimicrobials" in 75 Austrian pig farms--evaluation of on-farm drug application data.

The World Health Organization lists antimicrobial substances which are essential for the treatment of specific infections in humans as "highest priority critically important antimicrobials" (HPCIAs): macrolides, fluoroquinolones, 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins as well as glycopeptid antibacterials. The use of these substances in livestock husbandry should be restricted in order to minimise the risk of antimicrobial resistance. To date, there is little knowledge about the amounts of HPCIAs used in animal husbandry and the different animal species and diagnoses these antimicrobials are pr

Detection of Cryptosporidium muris type oocysts from beef cattle in a farm and from domestic and wild animals in and around the farm.

Cryptosporidium muris type oocysts were detected from 21 of 516 beef cattle in a farm. Then we surveyed Cryptosporidium oocysts in 348 beef and dairy cattle, 500 pigs, 101 dogs, 38 wild animals and 11 zoo-kept animals in and around the farm. Oocysts were detected from only 2 of 25 Japanese field mice, Apodemus speciosus in the same farm. Gene analysis suggested that the oocysts were different from the C. muris type bovine isolate.

Work-related injuries among Iowa farm operators: an analysis of the Iowa Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance Project.

In 1994, the Iowa Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance Project carried out a two-stage, stratified, cluster survey of Iowa farms using a mail survey. With data from this representative sample of Iowa farmers, we examined the associations between farm-work-related injuries and possible risk factors for 390 principal farm operators. Forty (10.3%) of these operators reported being injured while doing farm work. We developed a logistic regression to assess associations between potential risk factors and injury. We found three factors significantly associated with injury: younger age (odds ra

Epidemiology of leptospirosis in dairy farm workers in the Manawatu. Part II. A case-control study of high and low risk farms.

Subsequent to a cross-sectional serological survey of Manawatu dairy farm workers, a case-control study was carried out to investigate the correlation between titres to leptospiral serovars in workers and those in cattle in their herds. A total of 52 herds was investigated, 25 of which were high risk where milkers had titres of 1:96 or greater, and 27 were case-controls where milkers had no detectable agglutinin titres at a minimum serum dilution of 1:24. The serological prevalence of titres to hardjo in cattle on high risk farms (76.5%) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than on the case-contr

Quantification of antimicrobial use in semi-intensive broiler farms in Kenya.

The rapid global expansion of poultry production has intensified antimicrobial use (AMU) and emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Understanding patterns, timing, and quantities of AMU is essential for designing effective stewardship strategies. This study quantified AMU in semi-intensive broiler farms in Kenya using three complementary categories of metrics. Data were collected longitudinally from 73 farms across 310 production cycles over 10 months. Farmers recorded daily flock size and antibiotic administration using a standardized farm recording forms, and medicine packaging waste b

Mapping antibiotic use and calf-rearing practices on Brazilian dairy farms.

Antimicrobial use in preweaning dairy calves is largely driven by the high morbidity and mortality observed in early life and by on-farm management practices. However, such use also contributes to the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, raising important public and environmental health concerns. This study aimed to characterize antimicrobial use patterns and management practices in Brazilian dairy herds. An online questionnaire was distributed between June and November 2020 via social media, e-mail, and WhatsApp messages to reach dairy farm managers, including prod

A drone-based system for sampling airborne bacteria near intensive farms.

BACKGROUND: Bioaerosols, which include airborne bacteria, are a growing concern for public health, especially near intensive farming operations that generate high concentrations of microorganisms. Intensive farms, such as those for cattle, can release potentially pathogenic bacteria into the air, posing risks to nearby communities and farmworkers. Traditional sampling methods are often limited, as they require stationary collection points and can miss key information about how these bioaerosols disperse. To address this issue, this study introduces a proof-of-concept drone-based system designe

Phylogenetic and genomic insights of Flavobacterium diversity in Quebec's fish farms.

The genus Flavobacterium constitutes a vast pool of microorganisms living in multiple environmental niches including fish pathogens and species in the fish microbiome. Veterinary reports have identified flavobacteria in fish from Quebec's fish farms, confirming their association with infections. However, these reports have not conducted in-depth characterization, and the diversity of nonpathogenic flavobacteria in Quebec remains unknown. This study is the first step in assessing the diversity of Flavobacterium in Quebec's fish farms, without focusing solely on pathogenic strains. Seventeen iso

Particulate and dissolved organic carbon losses in high latitude seaweed farms.

The role of macroalgae as natural sinks for carbon dioxide (CO2) has long been recognized, and interest for climate mitigating solutions from seaweed cultivation is quickly rising. Erosion of biomass provides natural avenues for carbon sequestration at sea, yet data is still lacking for important European cultivars, particularly combining particulate (POC) and dissolved (DOC) organic carbon losses. In this study, data is provided on carbon uptake, lamina growth and erosion over two consecutive seasons for the kelp Saccharina latissima (Phaeophyceae) deployed in Autumn and Winter in Hitra, Norw

Molecular identification of Balantioides coli in asymptomatic pigs from Norwegian farms.

Balantioides coli is a ciliated intestinal parasite of pigs with known zoonotic potential. Although Norway maintains high biosecurity standards and restricts live animal imports, the prevalence of B. coli in Norwegian pig herds has not been formally evaluated. We investigated the occurrence of B. coli in faecal samples from 125 pigs across eight commercial farms and one research facility. Microscopic examination revealed trophozoites and cysts in 48 % of wet-mount preparations and 28 % of McMaster flotation samples. PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene identified B. coli in 70.4 % of animals, with

An economic assessment of alternative antimicrobial use scenarios on pig farms.

This paper explores the theoretical economic outcome of management changes that result in different levels of antimicrobial use (AMU) in two types of UK pig farm. A static farm economic pig production model (FEPM) was used on a representative 'Top-third' most profitable farm and a representative 'Mid-range' profitable farm. Three AMU theoretical management scenarios were investigated; (a) management changes leading to a reduction of AMU by 35% (AMU35); (b) more extensive management changes leading to a reduction of AMU by 95% (AMU95); and (c) implementing depopulation of the herd (AMU Depop).

Diversity of Salmonella enterica phages isolated from chicken farms in Kenya.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica infections are one of the leading causes of diarrhoeal diseases that spread to humans from animal sources such as poultry. Hence, keeping poultry farms free of Salmonella is essential for consumer safety and for a better yield of animal products. However, the emergence of antibiotic resistance due to over usage has sped up the search for alternative biocontrol methods such as the use of bacteriophages. Isolation and characterization of novel bacteriophages are key to adapt phage-based biocontrol applications. Here, we isolated and characterized Salmonella phag
