Reading Fluency and Students With Reading Disabilities: How Fast Is Fast Enough to Promote Reading Comprehension?

The goal of improving reading rate and fluency is to positively impact reading comprehension; however, it is unclear how fast students with learning disabilities (LD) need to read to reap this benefit. The purpose of this research was to identify the point of diminishing return for students who were dysfluent readers. Participants included 337 students with reading difficulties in second and fourth grade (61% eligible for special education; 80% with a diagnosis of LD in the area of reading) and 150 typical readers from the same general education classes. LOESS (LOcal regrESSion) plots (logisti

Three-dimensional fast recovery fast spin-echo imaging of the inner ear and the vestibulocochlear nerve.

The aim of this study was to assess the performance of three-dimensional fast recovery fast spin-echo (3DFRFSE) for imaging of the inner ear as well as the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. We evaluated 3DFRFSE sequences, comparing it with 3D fast spin-echo (3DFSE) in a water phantom and in 12 normal volunteers. We also examined 66 patients using 3DFRFSE sequence and assessed the visualization of their pathologies. In a water phantom study, signal intensity (SI) on 3DFRFSE was higher than that on 3DFSE at the same TR ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 ms. In normal volunteers, 3DFRFSE with TR of 2

FAST BEE (Keeping FAST First): A Public Stroke Education Design to Drive EMS Activation.

Improving stroke recognition and promoting immediate action are critical to enhancing prehospital stroke care. For two decades, the FAST (Face, Arm, Speech, Time) mnemonic has been widely taught, yet it fails to capture many posterior circulation strokes. To address these limitations, BE FAST (adding Balance and Eye symptoms) was introduced but showed reduced recall for more common symptoms represented by FAST, likely due to common symptoms being placed after less common ones, thus weakening retention of the original FAST elements. To improve both detection and action, we propose FAST BEE-keep

Bacillary Positive Tuberculous Body Fluid Smears: A Perspective on How Fast to Use Acid Fast.

Background Tuberculous effusions are common. Classically, they are described as bacteria poor and lymphocyte rich. Our experience, however, has been more varied. We compiled this rare group of bacteria-positive tuberculous fluids to document their cytologic spectrum and to look for possible predictors of bacillary positivity. Methods Fifty-one cases of bacillary positive fluids were identified and their clinicopathological details were noted. Per case, the smear background was assigned as either clear, caseous, suppurative, granular proteinaceous or frankly hemorrhagic. Fine, punched-out vacuo

To fast or not to fast: Lipid measurement and cardiovascular disease risk estimation in rural sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality are increasing in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA), highlighting the need for tools to enable CVD risk stratification in the region. Although non-HDL-cholesterol (nHDL-C) has been promoted as a method to measure lipids without a requirement for fasting in the USA, its diagnostic validity has not been assessed in sSA. We sought to estimate: 1) the association between LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and nHDL-C, 2) the impact of fasting on their measurement, and 3) their correlation with carotid atherosclerosis, within a rural Ugandan population wi

The dietary composition of pre-fast meals and its effect on 24 hour food and water fasting.

BACKGROUND: Fasting is required by the Jewish and Islamic religions, and may sometimes be necessary for non-religious reasons as well. Very little empiric data are available on the effect of 24 hours of food and water deprivation. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of the dietary composition of different pre-fast meals on subjective discomfort and various other parameters of a 24 hour food and water fast. METHODS: Thirteen volunteers of both genders participated in a non-randomized crossover study. Each consumed three different equicaloric pre-fast meals in which the main source of calories

Increasing autophagy with fasting and diet: separating fact from fiction.

Autophagy is the cell's recycling system; it removes unwanted or dysfunctional cellular material, thereby preventing damage. Importantly, it is a key pro-survival pathway during periods of stress, for instance, during nutrient scarcity. As it can support nutrition during starvation, it is not surprising that autophagy is controlled by nutrient availability. As a result, diet-based strategies to modify autophagy have attracted considerable scientific and public interest, although what is presented to the public is often not supported by a solid scientific foundation. Evidence from animal models

Intermittent fasting ameliorates resistant hypertension through modulation of gut microbiota.

Resistant hypertension (RH) remains a major cardiovascular challenge despite optimal pharmacological treatment. Intermittent fasting (IF) has demonstrated beneficial effects in various diseases, but its impact on RH and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we explored the effects of a 2 week IF regimen (16 h fasting/8 h eating) on RH patients and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) resistant to antihypertensive drugs. We found that IF significantly reduced blood pressure in RH patients, accompanied by a shift in the gut microbiota, including increased abundance of Akkerm

Fasting improves oral bioavailability of mitragynine in healthy female Beagles.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pharmacokinetic profile and safety of an encapsulated kratom extract when administered orally to fed and fasted healthy female Beagles. METHODS: The study was conducted over a 24-hour period in June 2023. Dogs were randomly assigned to 2 groups (4 dogs each). All dogs received 8 mg (targeted mitragynine dose of 0.55 to 0.68 mg/kg) of a formulated kratom extract per capsule (45% mitragynine, weight-for-weight kratom extract). One group was administered the capsule with food and the other after fasting. Blood sampling was performed at fixed time points over 24 hours.

Effects of fasting on HDL particle function and size distribution.

The effects of fasting on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles remain an area of ongoing investigation. This narrative review examines the impact of various fasting regimens, including intermittent fasting (IF) and continuous fasting (CF), on HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), particle size distribution, and concentration. Current evidence on fasting's influence on HDL particles is limited and inconsistent, particularly in IF studies, where variability in HDL metrics, recruitment bias, and confounding factors-such as weight loss as a primary study goal-complicate interpretation. While some CF studie

Fasting Mimicking Diets Reverse Accelerated Biological Aging in Multiple Sclerosis.

Reversing the aging process may yield significant benefits in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), as accelerated biological aging is observed in this population. Secondary analyses of 2 previously conducted dietary interventions including a 6-month modified ketogenic diet in 39 participants and an 8-week randomized comparison of intermittent and daily calorie restriction versus a weight-stable regimen in 36 participants demonstrated significant decreases in metabolomic age (mAge) following the ketogenic diet (p = 0.009) and intermittent calorie restriction (p = 0.04), whereas daily calorie

Are there sex differences in the variability of fasting metabolism?

There is evidence across species and across many traits that males display greater between-individual variance. In contrast, (premenopausal) females display large within-individual variance in sex hormone concentrations, which can increase within-individual variance in many other parameters. The latter may contribute to the lower representation of females in metabolic research. This study is a pooled secondary analysis of data from seven crossover studies to investigate the between-individual and the within-individual variance in fasting plasma metabolites, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and bo

Intermittent fasting and the liver: Focus on the Ramadan model.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an intervention that involves not only dietary modifications but also behavioral changes with the main core being a period of fasting alternating with a period of controlled feeding. The duration of fasting differs from one regimen to another. Ramadan fasting (RF) is a religious fasting for Muslims, it lasts for only one month every one lunar year. In this model of fasting, observers abstain from food and water for a period that extends from dawn to sunset. The period of daily fasting is variable (12-18 hours) as Ramadan rotates in all seasons of the year. Conseque

Longitudinal transactions between negative urgency and fasting predict binge eating.

UNLABELLED: Fasting and negative urgency (the disposition to act rashly when distressed) are risk factors for binge eating. It may be that each influences the other over time to predict binge eating. OBJECTIVE: This study tested whether (1) fasting predicts binge eating through negative urgency, and (2) negative urgency predicts binge eating through fasting. METHOD: Path analysis and mediation tests were used to investigate objectives in n = 302 college women assessed three times over eight months. We controlled for each variable at the previous time point, and concurrent negative affect and

Loss of Otopetrin 1 affects thermoregulation during fasting in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Otopetrin 1 (OTOP1) is a proton channel that is highly expressed in brown adipose tissue. We examined the physiology of Otop1-/- mice, which lack functional OTOP1. METHODS: Mice were studied by indirect calorimetry and telemetric ambulatory body temperature monitoring. Mitochondrial function was measured as oxygen consumption and extracellular acidification. RESULTS: Otop1-/- mice had similar body temperatures as control mice at baseline and in response to cold and hot ambient temperatures. However, in response to fasting the Otop1-/- mice exhibited an exaggerated hypothermia and

Ramadan intermittent fasting reduces visceral fat and improves gastrointestinal motility.

BACKGROUND: Ramadan is a model of intermittent fasting linked with possible beneficial effects. Scarce information, however, is available about the combined effects of Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF) on anthropometric and metabolic indices, gastrointestinal symptoms, and motility. METHODS: In 21 healthy Muslims, we assessed the impact of RIF on caloric intake, physical activity, gastrointestinal symptoms and motility (gastric/gallbladder emptying by ultrasonography, orocaecal transit time by lactulose breath test), anthropometric indices, subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness (ultrasonog

Relationship of fasting glucose and longitudinal Alzheimer's disease imaging markers.

INTRODUCTION: Fasting glucose increases with age and is linked to modifiable Alzheimer's disease risk factors such as cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: We leveraged available biospecimens and neuroimaging measures collected during the Alzheimer's Prevention Through Exercise (APEx) trial (n = 105) to examine the longitudinal relationship between change in blood glucose metabolism and change in regional cerebral amyloid deposition and gray and white matter (WM) neurodegeneration in older adults over 1 year of follow-up. RESULTS: Individuals with improving fasting gluco

Diurnal Fasting During Ramadan Leading to Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a favorite of anatomists and clinicians because it results from extrinsic compression of the duodenum by the 2 vascular structures forming the aortomesenteric angle (the descending abdominal aorta and the SMA). Although it is an uncommon cause of upper gastrointestinal obstruction, SMA syndrome can cause significant morbidity. It is more common in younger people. Historically, it has been associated with weight loss and eating disorders, but there are several other risk factors that should be considered in the workup. Cases of SMA syndrome are typic

Fasting promotes acute hypoxic adaptation by suppressing mTOR-mediated pathways.

Rapid adaptation to a hypoxic environment is an unanswered question that we are committed to exploring. At present, there is no suitable strategy to achieve rapid hypoxic adaptation. Here, we demonstrate that fasting preconditioning for 72 h reduces tissue injuries and maintains cardiac function, consequently significantly improving the survival rates of rats under extreme hypoxia, and this strategy can be used for rapid hypoxic adaptation. Mechanistically, fasting reduces blood glucose and further suppresses tissue mTOR activity. On the one hand, fasting-induced mTOR inhibition reduces unnece
