[Fathers' Experiences of Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum During the Covid 19 Pandemic].

INTRODUCTION: In order to reduce the possible risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2, access restrictions have been introduced in all areas of public life. In extra- and intramural health care facilities, these measures also affect pregnant women, women giving birth, and women who have recently given birth as well as their partners. The aim of this study is to collect and reflect on the experiences of expectant fathers against the background of pandemic-related restrictions. METHOD: Following a qualitative study design, 11 guided interviews with fathers who experienced a birth during the Covid 19 pa

Effects of vasopressin on neural processing of infant crying in expectant fathers.

In a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined the effect of 20 IU intranasal vasopressin on the neural processing of infant crying in 25 fathers-to-be. We explored whether familial background modulates vasopressin effects, and whether vasopressin differentially affects cry processing coupled with neutral or emotional contextual information. Participants listened to cries accompanied by neutral ('this is an infant') or emotional ('this infant is sick/bored') contextual information, and neutral control sounds ('this is a saw'). Ad

Concealed concern: fathers' experiences of having a child with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Despite increased research into families of chronically ill children, more needs to be known about the father's experience. We address this issue through asking: 'What is it like to be the father of a child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?' (JIA). Four members of eight families with an adolescent diagnosed with JIA, including seven fathers, were interviewed and transcripts analysed using grounded theory. This study suggests that fathers of children with JIA experience several severe losses which are exacerbated through comparisons they make between their own situation and that of fathers of

Increased frequency of reproductive health problems among fathers of boys with hypospadias.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have suggested an association between paternal subfertility and hypospadias among their sons, although the association has not been systematically investigated. We therefore compared male reproductive health among a group of fathers of boys with hypospadias and a group of fathers to normal children. METHODS: A total of 64 fathers of boys with hypospadias participated; 349 partners of pregnant women served as a control group. All men delivered a semen sample, had a blood sample drawn, underwent a physical examination and completed a questionnaire. RESULTS: Fathers of

Does individual treatment for alcoholic fathers benefit their children? A longitudinal assessment.

Psychosocial adjustment in children of alcoholics (COAs; N=125) was examined before and at 3 follow-ups in the 15 months after their fathers entered alcoholism treatment. Before their fathers' treatment, COAs exhibited greater overall and clinical-level symptomatology than children from the demographically matched comparison sample, but they improved significantly following their fathers' treatment. Children of stably remitted fathers were similar to their demographic counterparts from the comparison sample and had fewer adjustment problems than children of relapsed fathers, even after account

Fathers' occupational contacts and risk of childhood leukemia and non-hodgkin lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence to suggest that childhood leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma have an infective etiology. We investigated the risk of childhood leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in relation to paternal occupational contact with other individuals, a surrogate for potential exposure to infection. METHODS: We carried out a case-control study using 792 cases from the Northern Region Young Persons' Malignant Disease Registry, United Kingdom, 1968-1997, and 2 large population-based control groups. Paternal occupations at birth were classified as having standard, high, or very high level

Clinically referred children and adolescents: fathers, family constellations, and other demographic factors.

Investigated the likelihood that clinically referred youth have contact with their biological father. Family demographics such as family constellation, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status were also explored. Based on 356 consecutive therapy and assessment referrals to an outpatient clinic, slightly less than half (42.4%) of the children and adolescents referred due to psychological problems and more than half (67.8%) of the youth referred due to learning difficulties lived with both their biological mother and biological father. For those who did not live with both of their biological par

Forced migrant fathers' experiences of pregnancy and childbirth: a hermeneutic phenomenological study.

INTRODUCTION: There is an increasing body of literature exploring migrant (including forced migrant) women's experiences of maternity care in their host country. However, there is a paucity of research around the perspective of migrant fathers. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the experiences of forced migrant fathers during the pregnancy and childbirth of their partners, examining the challenges and emotional dynamics encountered in these transitional periods. METHOD: A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was employed to gain a deep understanding of the fathers' lived experiences. In

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Fathers' Food Parenting Practices and Children's Diets.

Racial and ethnic disparities in children's diets are prevalent. Little is known about how fathers' food parenting practices may contribute to these disparities. We examined racial and ethnic variations in food parenting practices and their associations with 2-6-year-old children's diets in a cross-sectional sample of U.S. fathers surveyed in 2021-2023 (N = 1015; 16% Asian, 9% Black, 6% Hispanic, 70% White; Mage = 37 years) using path analysis. Fathers' food parenting practices were significantly associated with children's diets, yet little evidence emerged that fathers' food parenting practic

Perinatal fetal loss grief counselling experience for expectant fathers: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Expectant fathers may experience negative emotions such as grief and distress following perinatal fetal death, potentially sustaining psychological trauma of varying severity. In severe cases, this may adversely affect family harmony, marital intimacy, and social cohesion. Consequently, understanding fathers' experiences within such circumstances is of paramount importance. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the experience of grief counselling for expectant fathers following perinatal fetal loss. METHODS: Sixteen expectant fathers who experienced perinatal fetal loss were recruited

Expectant and new fathers say they need resources and sources of support.

OBJECTIVES: It is critical to exhaust the range of opportunities to reduce racial inequities in maternal mortality. Developing interventions to optimize how fathers can support mothers during pregnancy and childbirth remains under developed, particularly in the context of racial inequities. In this study, we collected formative data from expectant and new fathers to identify the types of supports and resources they need to promote positive maternal health outcomes. DESIGN: We used a phenomenological thematic approach to analyze data from 80 new fathers in 10 focus groups from five of the six

The Effect of Peer Influence and Neighborhood Quality on Incarcerated Fathers' Attachment.

Commonly referred to as the "hidden victims" of incarceration, children with a parent who is intermittently or repeatedly incarcerated face various challenges that exacerbate behavioral and psychological development. Using a baseline adaptation of the Multi-site Family Study on Incarceration, Parenting and Partnering (MFS-IP), we sought to clarify how peer influence and neighborhood quality can predict the extent of an incarcerated father's attachment to the focal child and partner. Results showed a negative association between negative peer influence and poor neighborhood quality. Conversely,

Family reunification after fathers are released from prison: Perspectives on children's adjustment.

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study examined adult perspectives on the adjustments children face through the process of paternal incarceration and eventual release. BACKGROUND: While the United States leads the world in incarceration, 95% of imprisoned individuals return to community life. Despite poor outcomes for children with incarcerated fathers, less is known as to how they fair after fathers' release. Conceptualizing paternal incarceration and reentry as linked rather than disparate events, this study examines perspectives on family separation, reunification, and children's adjustment whe

How many fathers? Study design implications when inferring multiple paternity in crocodilians.

Up to 10 males were reported to sire clutches of crocodilian eggs but review of the underlying study designs raised questions of potential upward bias of inferred sire numbers. To test this premise, different scenarios were explored using a published dataset of 16 known single-sire saltwater crocodile pairs and their offspring which were originally confirmed using a 11 loci microsatellite panel in CERVUS. Varying the number of microsatellites, omitting one or both parental genotypes and using different parentage analysis techniques revealed that total allele number, rather than number of loci,
