BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Bowel diaries are used to characterize the severity of fecal incontinence (FI) but have not been adequately validated for this purpose. Our aims were to validate a new bowel diary and to compare the characteristics of FI as assessed with a bowel diary and a validated questionnaire.
METHODS: In this four-center prospective study, patients with a history of FI and asymptomatic controls completed a 28-day bowel diary and validated questionnaires to evaluate bowel habits and FI, quality of life related to FI (FIQoL), and PROMIS scales for anxiety, depression, and self-efficac

Fecal incontinence (FI) is often underreported and underestimated in men. Our aims were to clarify the causes and the physiological characteristics of FI in men and to underline the differences between etiological and physiological factors in men and women diagnosed with FI. The study cohort encompassed 200 men and 200 women who underwent anatomical and physiological evaluation for FI in a tertiary referral center specializing in pelvic floor disorders. All patients underwent endoanal ultrasound and anorectal manometry. Evacuation proctography was performed in some patients. Demographic, medic

Fecal incontinence is a frequent and debilitating condition that may result from a multitude of different causes. Treatment is often challenging and needs to be individualized. During the last several years, new technologies have been developed, and others are emerging from clinical trials to commercialization. Although their specific roles in the management of fecal incontinence have not yet been completely defined, surgeons have access to them and patients may request them. The purpose of this project is to put into perspective, for both the patient and the practitioner, the relative positio

Even though fecal incontinence (FI) in children is most commonly the result of functional constipation, there are organic conditions that can be associated with incontinence. FI has a major impact on the quality of life of those children who experience it. The general objectives of any bowel program are to achieve predictability and independence. This is achieved by manipulating colonic transit and stool consistency and by producing more controlled evacuations, usually with the use of rectal interventions. Dietary interventions and medications can be used to change stool consistency or to mani

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to discuss the effect of pelvic floor muscle training on fecal incontinence.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on patients who received pelvic floor muscle training from March 2002 to April 2007. There were 55 patients with fecal incontinence (male, 32 cases; female, 23 cases; mean age, 9.4 years old from 6 to 14), including 39 cases of anorectal malformation and 16 cases of Hirschsprung's disease. Pelvic floor muscle training was performed using biofeedback for 2 weeks in hospital, 2 times each day, and 30 minutes each time. The patients wer

Fecal incontinence presents a major challenge in the comprehensive nursing care of acutely and critically ill patients. When manifested as diarrhea, the effects of fecal incontinence can range from mild (superficial skin irritation) to profound (severe perineal dermatitis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and sepsis). Fecal incontinence has many etiologies and risk factors. These include damage to the anal sphincter or pelvic floor, liquid stool consistency, abnormal colonic transport, and decreased intestinal capacity. To avoid or minimize complications, the cause of diarrhea should be add

In this article, the author presents an overview of normal skin and a description of perineal skin injury. The focus is to identify the goals for treatment for persons with frequent diarrhea or fecal incontinence as it relates to their perineal skin care. Specific algorithms for acute care and ambulatory settings are defined, and two case studies are presented. The treatment goals include evaluation of and recommendations for reviewing and choosing perineal skin products.

PURPOSE: Abnormalities of rectoanal inhibitory or excitatory reflex in patients with fecal incontinence are well described. A spectrum of abnormal responses, other than those already described in the literature, has been observed in some patients with fecal incontinence and forms the subject of this report.
METHOD: Forty-three patients with idiopathic or traumatic fecal incontinence were studied to evaluate their reflex responses to balloon distention of the rectum, and results were compared with reflex responses of 29 control subjects with no anorectal complaints.
RESULTS: Control subjects

Six cases of gracilis muscle transplant for fecal incontinence are reported. The causes of fecal incontinence included previous anal operation, idiopathic incontinence, and rectal prolapse. All patients had had a previous operation for fecal incontinence. Postoperative sepsis developed at the operative site in five patients despite a defunctioning colostomy in two. Functional results of the operation were poor in all patients and a colostomy has now been raised in all cases. The operation was not associated with any objective improvement in resting or voluntary component pressure.

Eight patients with fecal incontinence were seen. All eight patients had massive splenomegaly secondary to myelofibrosis and myeloid metaplasia. Six of the eight patients underwent splenectomy for hypersplenism. Five of the six had total improvement of the fecal incontinence. One died two weeks postoperatively and could not be evaluated. In our opinion, the fecal incontinence was related to the splenomegaly. The possible mechanism is discussed. If absolutely necessary for control of fecal incontinence in this situation, splenectomy should be considered.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is increasingly recognized as a contributor to both osteoporosis and gastrointestinal dysfunction. The prognostic nutritional index, derived from serum albumin and lymphocyte counts, reflects nutritional and immune status. However, its association with fecal incontinence in osteoporotic patients remains unexplored.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included osteoporotic patients from one Chinese tertiary hospital between 2021 and 2025. FI was assessed using the bowel health questionnaire, and severity was quantified by the fecal incontinence severity index (FISI). M

BACKGROUND: Fecal incontinence (FI) is common after spinal cord injury (SCI), but modifiable risk factors are unclear. The association between malnutrition and FI in patients with SCI remains unclear.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 2,256 SCI patients. Nutritional status was assessed using the CONUT score (albumin, cholesterol, lymphocytes). FI was self-reported, and the fecal incontinence severity index (FISI) was used to quantify severity. Logistic and linear regressions tested CONUT associations with FI and FISI. Restricted cubic splines examined the dose-response. Exploratory

INTRODUCTION: Non-retentive fecal incontinence (NRFI) is an uncommon condition. Those with NRFI often endure considerable social and emotional challenges-such as low self-esteem, embarrassment, and social isolation-that significantly impact their quality of life.
AREA COVERED: A literature search was conducted using PubMed and other related databases using appropriate keywords. Relevant articles published in English language were identified and critically appraised to synthesis current evidence and major gaps in the knowledge. The review covers historical aspects of evolution of the diagnosti
