Time-restricted feeding prevents depressive-like behaviors by suppressing changes in the gut microbiota.

Long-term high-fat diet (HFD) intake changes the gut microbiota to an inflammatory state, which induces inflammation in the brain and is related to the onset of metabolic abnormalities and depression. Time-restricted feeding (TRF) has been shown to inhibit HFD-induced weight gain and gut inflammation. However, the effects of TRF on HFD-induced depression are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of TRF on depression induced by a HFD. The mice were divided into three groups as follows, and subjected to an 8-week intervention; normal diet (NC), a HFD ad libitum (FA), a

Genetic relationships between behavioral traits and feed efficiency traits in lactating Holstein cows.

The evaluation of dairy cow feed efficiency using residual feed intake accounts for known energy sinks. However, behavioral traits may also contribute to the variation in feed efficiency. Our objective was to estimate the heritability and repeatability of behavioral traits and their genetic correlations with feed efficiency and its components in lactating Holstein cows. The first dataset consisted of 36,075 daily rumination and lying time records collected using a SMARTBOW ear-tag accelerometer (Zoetis, Parsippany, NJ) and 6,371 weekly feed efficiency records of 728 cows from the University of

Natural variation in host feeding behaviors impacts host disease and pathogen transmission potential.

Animals ranging from mosquitoes to humans often vary their feeding behavior when infected or merely exposed to pathogens. These so-called "sickness behaviors" are part of the innate immune response with many consequences, including avoiding orally transmitted pathogens. Fully understanding the role of this ubiquitous behavior in host defense and pathogen evolution requires a quantitative account of its impact on host and pathogen fitness across environmentally relevant contexts. Here, we use a zooplankton host and fungal pathogen as a case study to ask if infection-mediated feeding behaviors v

Evaluation of the RumiWatch system as a benchmark to monitor feeding and locomotion behaviors of grazing dairy cows.

Direct visual observation is a common method for validation of animal behavior technologies; however, visual observations are time consuming and subject to human error. The objective of this study was to evaluate the RumiWatch system (Itin and Hoch GmbH, Liestal, Switzerland), which is composed of a noseband sensor and a pedometer, for monitoring feeding and locomotion behaviors of grazing dairy cows, to determine its accuracy for use as a benchmark in validation studies. The study was conducted at the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, Minnesota, from

Feeding status alters exploratory and anxiety-like behaviors in zebrafish larvae exposed to quinpirole.

The dysfunction of dopaminergic signaling is associated with several neurological disorders. The use of pharmacological agents that interact with this signaling system may be employed to understand mechanisms underlying such disorders. Nutritional status can impact dopamine reuptake, receptor affinity, transporter activity, and the effects of drugs that bind to dopamine receptors or interact with dopaminergic system. Here we evaluated the effects of quinpirole (a dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonist) exposure on fed and non-fed zebrafish larvae. Zebrafish larvae (6 days post-fertilization, dpf) wer

Changes in gene expressions of hypothalamic neuropeptides controlling feeding behaviors in bilateral nephrectomized rats.

Anorexia is one of the most widespread eating disorders that appears to contribute to malnutrition in patients with advanced kidney dysfunction. The changes of neuropeptides controlling feeding behaviors synthesized in the hypothalamus under several physiological condition could induce anorexia. While several mechanisms underlying uremic anorexia have been proposed, the changes of hypothalamic neuropeptides controlling feeding behaviors of uremic patients are poorly understood. The gene expressions of hypothalamic neuropeptides controlling feeding behaviors were evaluated after bilateral nephr

Behavioral changes in response to feeding pancreatic-like enzymes to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency pigs.

Behavioral changes during pancreatic enzyme therapy have never been studied. The present study investigated behavioral changes in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) pigs when their feed was supplemented with pancreatic-like enzymes of microbial origin. A crossover design study was used to test the effect of enzyme supplementation in 2 × 4 EPI pigs that underwent pancreatic duct ligation (PDL). After 40 d of adaptation, the study commenced, comprising 2 control and 2 enzyme feeding periods of 10 d each in sequence. On days 7 and 10 of each experimental period, behavior was monitored for 24

Retrospective reports of child feeding practices, current eating behaviors, and BMI in college students.

Research concerning child feeding practices has focused on children and adolescents, and little is known about how feeding practices used in childhood relate to eating behaviors and weight status in early adulthood. We assessed college students' and their parents' retrospective reports of child feeding practices used when the students were in middle childhood. We also assessed the college students' current reports of their eating behaviors using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) and the Intuitive Eating Scale (IES), and measured their current BMI. Results showed that college stude

Different behavioral effects of haloperidol, clozapine and thioridazine in a concurrent lever pressing and feeding procedure.

Rats were tested using a lever pressing/feeding procedure in which a preferred food (Bioserve pellets) was available by pressing a lever on a fixed ratio 5 schedule, but a less preferred food (lab chow) was also available concurrently in the operant chamber. The effects of repeated (14 day) injections of haloperidol, clozapine and thioridazine were compared. Haloperidol (0.05-0.15 mg/kg) significantly reduced lever pressing and increased chow intake throughout the drug treatment period. Injections of clozapine (2.0-6.0 mg/kg) suppressed lever pressing but failed to produce substantial increase

[Distrubance in retention of a conditioned feeding behavior in mice by subconvulsant electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex].

A bilateral 80 s stimulation of the parieto-occipital cortex was applied 200 s after a former partial acquisition test in a Skinner box. It has resulted in an impairment of the performances obtained 24 h later through a second test. This effect was greater the greater the stimulus, this latter being always kept under threshold values of post-discharges. These results seem to reveal that reminiscence phenomena are under the control of neocortex, in a somewhat discrete way which does not produce any retrograde amnesia.

Stages of change in feeding behavior are associated with the consumption of fruits, vegetables, sweets and fats by adolescents.

The study verified the stages of change in adolescents' eating behavior regarding the regular consumption of fruits, vegetables, sweets, and fatty foods. This is a cross-sectional study with adolescents from public schools in Montes Claros-MG, Brazil, who were identified through a sample selected by probabilistic cluster sampling. The adolescents answered a questionnaire covering food consumption, stage of change in eating behavior, and sociodemographic conditions. Their weight and height were assessed. Food consumption was assessed according to Vigitel, which considered regular consumption wh

Navigating through trauma-informed care and behavioral treatment in young children with feeding problems.

Children may experience pediatric medical traumatic stress as a consequence of exposure to medical procedures, illness, or injury that are perceived as distressing, threatening, or otherwise aversive. In order to address the traumatic stress, trauma-informed care practices are warranted. The application of trauma-informed care practices has been widely used in healthcare for over 25 years; however, its integration into behavior-analytic practice has emerged more recently. Although trauma-informed care principles have informed practice across multiple areas of behavior analysis, relatively few

Associations between Perinatal Sleepiness and Breastfeeding Intentions and Attitudes and Infant Feeding Behaviors and Beliefs.

Breastfeeding rates fall short of public health goals, but barriers are poorly understood. We examined whether excessive sleepiness during pregnancy and the postpartum period was associated with breastfeeding intentions, attitudes, initiation, and continuation in a tobacco-exposed sample participating in a randomized controlled trial to reduce smoke exposure (n = 399). We used the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to examine associations between excessive sleepiness in early (12-16 weeks gestation) and late (32 weeks gestation) pregnancy and at 6 months postpartum, with breastfeeding attitudes us

Aberrant Feeding and Growth in Neonates With Prenatal Opioid Exposure: Evidence of Neuromodulation and Behavioral Changes.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) among pregnant women over the last decade has led to more than a fivefold increase in the number of neonates born with withdrawal signs known as Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) or Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). The impact of prenatal opioid exposure on these neonates remains a public health and research priority due to both its short and long-term effects on offspring. Among the adverse long-term effects associated with OUD is a metabolic syndrome with accompanying cardiovascular comorbidities. The susceptibility to metabolic diseases may begin as earl

Prey-mediated behavioral responses of feeding blue whales in controlled sound exposure experiments.

Behavioral response studies provide significant insights into the nature, magnitude, and consequences of changes in animal behavior in response to some external stimulus. Controlled exposure experiments (CEEs) to study behavioral response have faced challenges in quantifying the importance of and interaction among individual variability, exposure conditions, and environmental covariates. To investigate these complex parameters relative to blue whale behavior and how it may change as a function of certain sounds, we deployed multi-sensor acoustic tags and conducted CEEs using simulated mid-freq

Inhibition of opioid systems in the hypothalamus as well as the mesolimbic area suppresses feeding behavior of mice.

Opioid receptors, especially μ-opioid receptors, in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens (NAcc) are reported to regulate food motivation. However, the roles of μ-, δ- and κ-opioid receptors are not fully understood. Moreover, since μ-, δ- and κ-opioid receptors are reported to distribute in the hypothalamus, these receptors in the hypothalamus might regulate feeding behavior. Thus, the present study investigated the role of μ-, δ- and κ-opioid receptors in the VTA, the NAcc and the hypothalamus in the regulation of feeding behavior. Effect of feed sorting on chewing behavior, production, and rumen fermentation in lactating dairy cows.

Ration sorting is thought to allow cows to eat different rations throughout the day, causing fluctuations in rumen fermentation patterns that can be detrimental to production and possibly animal health. The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of varying total mixed ration (TMR) particle size on sorting behavior of lactating dairy cows and to evaluate effects on chewing behavior, milk yield, milk components, and rumen fermentation. Eight multiparous, Holstein cows (90±32 d in milk; 4 rumen cannulated) were randomly assigned to replicated 4×4 Latin squares. Cows were fed diets
