Ferritins are proteins that play a central role in maintaining intracellular iron balance. A cDNA clone of Fasciola hepatica (687 bp long) encoding a putative 228-amino acid polypeptide (FhFtn-1) homologous with ferritins of vertebrates and invertebrates was identified. This study assessed levels of growth hormone, albumin and ferritin in human fascioliasis and schistosomiasis. Forty three patients and ten healthy parasite free subjects were included as controls. This report describes a patient with iron deficiency in bone marrow examination and iron-responsive restless legs syndrome (RLS), in whom serum ferritin levels were well above the conventional cutoff for considering iron deficiency. The predictive value of serum ferritin for iron deficiency in RLS depends on the cutoff employed, on the pre-test likelihood of iron deficiency and on coexisting inflammatory conditions. Bone marrow examination is helpful when ferritin levels are equivocal.

Ferritin was assayed by immunoradiometrical procedure in peritoneal fluid (26 patients with various ovarian pathologies) and gastric juice (18 patients with stomach cancer and 28 cases of gastric ulcer disease). A recombinant protein of Paragonimus westermani yolk ferritin was bacterially produced from a previously cloned complementary DNA and was used as an antigen for an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) against paragonimiasis- and other helminth-infected sera to evaluate its serodiagnostic potential. BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis, a primary cause of myocardial infarction (MI), is an inflammatory disease. Aspirin use lowers risk of MI, probably through antithrombotic and antiinflammatory effects. Convincing evidence is presented that oxygen free radicals are involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Superoxide is produced by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) in synovial fluid and by macrophages in the synovial membrane. Tissue damage typical for free radical attack is detected in RA. No absolute deficiency of protective factors is found in RA compared to controls, but the available protection is insufficient to cope with all radicals formed.
