The blackening process of black-odor water: Substance types determination and crucial roles analysis.

Black-odor water is a serious environmental issue in many developing counties. Iron sulfides and chromophoric dissolved organic matter are considered possible blackening substances. However, the specific type of blackening iron sulfides and the contributions of blackening substances are unclear. This study performed a laboratory simulation experiment to identify the blackening iron sulfides and quantify the contribution of blackening substances. The environmental conditions for forming blackening substances and their blackening process were also determined. We demonstrated that the black iron

Stereoselectivity and Substrate Specificity of the Fe(II)/α-Ketoglutarate-Dependent Oxygenase TqaL.

Non-heme iron enzymes are versatile catalysts in the biosynthesis of medicinal natural products and have attracted increasing attention as practical catalytic tools in chemical synthesis due to their ability to perform chemically challenging transformations. The Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent oxygenase TqaL catalyzes unusual aziridine formation from l-Val via cleavage of the unactivated Cβ-H bond. However, the mechanistic details as well as the synthetic potential of TqaL-catalyzed ring closure remain unclear. Herein, we show that the TqaL-catalyzed aziridination of l-Val proceeds with an at

Studies on the binding of CO to low-spin [Fe(II)(Por)L2] complexes: an aid to understanding the binding of CO to haemoglobin and myoglobin.

The visible and Mössbauer spectra of [Fe(II)(Por)L2] and [Fe(II)(Por)L(CO)] complexes (where Por = protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) or tetra(p-sulfophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) and L = an aliphatic or aromatic nitrogenous base) are reported and discussed. The results are compared to those of previously reported [Fe(II)(Por)L(CO)] complexes (where Por = PPIX, TPPS, PMXPP, TPP, OMTBP and OEP; L = a nitrogenous aromatic ligand) and HbCO (where Hb = haemoglobin) and MyCO (where My = myoglobin). A new approach, to extracting information from the Mössbauer parameters has been developed by plotting those of the [

Catalytic activation of peroxydisulfate by secondary mineral derived self-modified iron-based composite for florfenicol degradation: Performance and mechanism.

The advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) driven by iron-based materials are the highly efficient technology for refractory organic pollutants treatment. In this work, self-modified iron-based catalysts were prepared using secondary mineral as the precursor by one-step pyrolysis process without additional dopants. The prepared catalysts exhibited excellent performance in catalytic degradation of florfenicol (FF), especially C-AJ, which was derived from ammoniojarosite [(NH4, H3O)Fe3(OH)6(SO4)2], activated PDS to degrade 93% FF with initial concentration of 50 mg/L. Time to discontinue the use of solutions A and B as a cyanide 'antidote'.

Solutions A and B (15.8% ferrous sulfate in 0.3% citric acid and 6% sodium carbonate, respectively) have been available as a first-aid treatment for cyanide ingestion for many decades. Controversy surrounding the efficacy of solutions A and B has existed for much of that time, the main protagonists being in the UK. The current opinion in the UK is that solutions A and B should no longer be used as a first-aid measure in the management of cyanide poisoning. Similarly, oral sodium thiosulfate or activated charcoal should not be used. The recommended first-aid treatment of symptomatic cyanide poi

Goethite Formed in the Periplasmic Space of Pseudomonas sp. JM-7 during Fe Cycling Enhances Its Denitrification in Water.

Denitrification-driven Fe(II) oxidation is an important microbial metabolism that connects iron and nitrogen cycling in the environment. The formation of Fe(III) minerals in the periplasmic space has a significant effect on microbial metabolism and electron transfer, but direct evidence of iron ions entering the periplasm and resulting in periplasmic mineral precipitation and electron conduction properties has yet to be conclusively determined. Here, we investigated the pathways and amounts of iron, with different valence states and morphologies, entering the periplasmic space of the denitrifi

Photo-induced reduction of vanadium in vanadium-containing iron/manganese oxide agglomerates by oxalic acid.

The stockpiling of vanadium-containing tailings allows vanadium to migrate into the surrounding area, resulting in toxic metal contamination. By using the vanadium-bearing iron/manganese (Fe/Mn) oxide agglomerates as the simulated tailings, the feasibility of photo-induced reduction of vanadium by oxalic acid was investigated. Batch effects of the available light and the reducing agents on agglomerates were investigated. Results showed that oxalic acid (5 mmol L-1) can convert V(V) to V(IV) and convert Fe(III) released from the Fe/Mn oxide agglomerates to Fe(II) under both light and dark condi

Biogeochemistry of the compost bioreactor components of a composite acid mine drainage passive remediation system.

The compost bioreactor ("anaerobic cell") components of three composite passive remediation systems constructed to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) at the former Wheal Jane tin mine, Cornwall, UK were studied over a period of 16 months. While there was some amelioration of the preprocessed AMD in each of the three compost bioreactors, as evidenced by pH increase and decrease in metal concentrations, only one of the cells showed effective removal of the two dominant heavy metals (iron and zinc) present. With two of the compost bioreactors, concentrations of soluble (ferrous) iron draining the cel

Resonance Raman spectroscopic characterization of compound III of lignin peroxidase.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectra of several compounds III of lignin peroxidase (LiP) have been measured at 90 K with Soret and visible excitation wavelengths. The samples include LiPIIIa (or oxyLiP) prepared by oxygenation of the ferrous enzyme, LiPIIIb generated by reaction of the native ferric enzyme with superoxide, LiPIIIc prepared from native LiP plus H2O2 followed by removal of excess peroxide with catalase, and LiPIII* made by addition of excess H2O2 to the native enzyme. The RR spectra of these four products appear to be similar and, thus, indicate that the environments of these hexacoordi

Dissolved silica affects the bulk iron redox state and recrystallization of minerals generated by photoferrotrophy in a simulated Archean ocean.

Chemical sedimentary deposits called Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) are one of the best surviving records of ancient marine (bio)geochemistry. Many BIF precursor sediments precipitated from ferruginous, silica-rich waters prior to the Great Oxidation Event at ~2.43 Ga. Reconstructing the mineralogy of BIF precursor phases is key to understanding the coevolution of seawater chemistry and early life. Many models of BIF deposition invoke the activity of Fe(II)-oxidizing photoautotrophic bacteria as a mechanism for precipitating mixed-valence Fe(II,III) and/or fully oxidized Fe(III) minerals in the

Complex formation of ML324, the histone demethylase inhibitor, with essential metal ions: Relationship between solution chemistry and anticancer activity.

N-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl-4-(8-hydroxyquinolin-6-yl)benzamide (ML324, HL) is a potent inhibitor of the iron-containing histone demethylase KDM4, a recognized potential target of cancer therapeutics. Herein, we report the proton dissociation and complex formation processes of ML324 with essential metal ions such as Fe(II), Fe(III), Cu(II) and Zn(II) using UV-visible, fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods. The electrochemical behaviour of the copper and iron complexes was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. The solid phase st

Using Fe(II)/Fe(VI) activated peracetic acid as pretreatment of ultrafiltration for secondary effluent treatment: Water quality improvement and membrane fouling mitigation.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a technology commonly used to treat secondary effluents in wastewater reuse; however, it faces two main challenges: 1) membrane fouling and 2) inadequate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and organic micropollutants (OMPs) removal. To address these two issues, in this study, we applied peracetic acid (PAA), Fe(VI)/PAA, and Fe(II)/PAA as UF pretreatments. The results showed that the most effective pretreatment was Fe(II)/200 μM PAA, which reduced the total fouling resistance by 90.2%. In comparison, the reduction was only 29.7% with 200 μM PAA alone and 64.3% with Fe(VI)/200

New Insight into the Natural Detoxification of Cr(VI) in Fe-Rich Surface Soil: Crucial Role of Photogenerated Silicate-Bound Fe(II).

Photoexcitation of natural semiconductor Fe(III) minerals has been proven to generate Fe(II), but the photogeneration of Fe(II) in Fe-rich surface soil as well as its role in the redox biogeochemistry of Cr(VI) remains poorly understood. In this work, we confirmed the generation of Fe(II) in soil by solar irradiation and proposed a new mechanism for the natural reductive detoxification of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in surface soil. The kinetic results showed that solar irradiation promoted the reduction of Cr(VI) in Fe-rich soils, while a negligible Cr(VI) reduction was observed in the dark. Fe(II), ma

On the Determination of Cr(VI) in Cr(III)-Rich Particulates: From the Failure of Official Methods to the Development of an Alternative Protocol.

The goals of this work are the evaluation of the performances of official methods in the challenging determination of Cr(VI) in Cr(III)-rich particulate matter, and the development of a novel and robust analytical protocol for this issue. A liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry apparatus (LC-ICP-MS), together with an isotope-enriched spike addition technique, was used to allow the study of Cr(III)/Cr(VI) interconversions during the extraction step. An original separation strategy based on Cr(OH)3 head-column stacking was developed to tolerate high concentrations of

Turn-on, photostable, nontoxic and specific, iron(II) sensor.

The pressing need to develop a specific analytical sensor that can identify and quantify Fe(II) without a cytotoxic response was the major motivation drive in this work. The turn-on fluorescent sensor here described can successfully detect Fe(II) and discriminate this ion from other analytes that commonly act as interferents in biological media. Moreover, this reduced fluoresceinamine-based sensor has a high photostability and high dissociation constant, which is an indication that the complex obtained between reduced fluoresceinamine (RFL) and Fe(II) is highly stable. This fluorescence-based
