Neuroprotective effects of Opuntia ficus-indica fruit in high-fat-diet-induced obese mice: evidence for a role of the gut microbiota.

Obesity and high-fat diet (HFD) consumption are associated with cognitive decline and increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Gut microbiota dysbiosis is a key factor for obesity-related brain dysfunctions. Opuntia ficus-indica fruit (OFIF) has shown beneficial metabolic and neuroprotective effects, but the contribution of the gut microbiota has not been explored yet. This study investigated whether OFIF exerts neuroprotective effects in HFD mice through microbiota-dependent mechanisms. C57BL/6 mice were fed a standard diet or HFD for 16 weeks, with o

A chromosome-level genome assembly for Ficus carica provides genetic insights into flowerless fig fruit development, psoralen biosynthesis, and drought tolerance.

Ficus carica L., an ancient crop of considerable economic value, exhibits distinctive biological traits, including flowerless fruit (syconium) development, psoralen biosynthesis, and drought tolerance. In this study, we present a chromosome-level genome assembly (323.03 Mb, N50 = 23.82 Mb) of F. carica, revealing an evolutionary divergence from the closely related genus Broussonetia approximately 50 million years ago. Comparative genomic analyses revealed a contraction in the s-domain receptor-like kinase gene family, which is associated with unisexual fruit formation, and identified conserved

Network pharmacology reveals Ficus. Carica. L latex as a potential therapeutic agent for gastric ulcers by modulating inflammation and promoting repair.

The primary objective of our research is to investigate the gastroprotective impact of Ficus. carica L. latex extract (FCL). Metabolic profiling based on HR- LCMS for the extract led to the annotation of 20 compounds. Additionally, the gastro-protective activity of the latex extract was evaluated in vivo using male albino rats. FCL significantly alleviated the indomethacin-induced ulceration and reduced the ulcer index. Furthermore, the inflammation caused by indomethacin was seen to diminish due to the downregulation of the production of certain genes (IL-6, and TNF-α, IL-1β). Besides, FCL co

Phenolic acids-rich fraction from Ficus drupacea leaves for the prevention and treatment of ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury in rats.

Bioactivity-guided fractionation of F. drupacea Thunb. extract revealed that the water fraction (FDWF) increased pH of the artificial gastric juice from 1.2 to 5.67 ± 0.015. The gastroprotective effect of FDWF against ulcer induced by ethanol was evaluated in rats. In ulcerogenic rats, increase in the gastric juice volume and ulcer lesions, and decrease in the gastric pH were evident. However, pretreatment with FDWF (100 mg/kg b.wt., p.o.) significantly inhibited lesion index, reduced gastric juice volume by 56.09% and increased gastric pH value. When given after ethanol, the same dose of FDWF
