Riemerella anatipestifer causes serious infections, characterized by septicemia and serositis, in ducks and geese. R. anatipestifer is mainly controlled through antimicrobial chemotherapy. This study investigated the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) integration of florfenicol (FF) against R. anatipestifer by establishing a systemic infection model in ducks. For PK studies, FF was administrated intramuscularly (i.m.) at single doses of 2.5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg body weight. The concentrations of FF in blood, lung, and liver were determined. FF was rapidly eliminated in R. anatipestifer-i

UNLABELLED: Riemerella anatipestifer is a major bacterial pathogen that causes septicemic and exudative diseases in domestic ducks. In our previous study, we found that deletion of the AS87_01735 gene significantly decreased the bacterial virulence of R. anatipestifer strain Yb2 (mutant RA625). The AS87_01735 gene was predicted to encode a nicotinamidase (PncA), a key enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of nicotinamide to nicotinic acid, which is an important reaction in the NAD(+) salvage pathway. In this study, the AS87_01735 gene was expressed and identified as the PncA-encoding gene, usin

Outbreaks of respiratory disease were investigated in reared pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) aged approximately 18 to 32 weeks, released into the semi-wild on four shooting estates in southern England. The clinical signs in the affected birds included swelling of the face and eyes, loss of condition, gasping respirations and coughing. The gross pathology findings included sinusitis, airsacculitis, pleural oedema and lung lesions. The histopathological findings in the affected lungs were characterized by a granulomatous pneumonia. Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) was isolated from respirat

Mucosal immunity serves as the first line of defense against pathogenic infections in animals. Respiratory mucosal vaccines elicit multi-layered immune responses that confer distinct advantages for disease prevention and control. Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) infection causes duck infectious serositis, leading to sustained economic losses in the duck industry. Commercially available inactivated RA vaccines are hampered by drawbacks such as stress induction and adjuvant residue. Targeting the RA-YM strain of serotype 1, the dominant epidemic RA serotype in China, this study employed markerless

Chryseobacteriumindologenes ( C. indologenes ) is a rare but emerging pathogen causing central nervous system (CNS) infections. It poses significant treatment challenges due to its antibiotic resistance. This case report describes the successful management of an intracranial infection caused by C. indologenes after aneurysm clipping, using a multidrug regimen. A retrospective analysis of the clinical course was performed, revealing that the patient responded well to intravenous Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ), oral Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), and minocycline, resulting in complete resoluti

Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer) is a Gram-negative bacterium that crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and causes meningitis with neurological symptoms in infected ducks. A threshold level of bacteremia must be reached before the BBB can be breached. In this study, the bacterial burden and expression profiles of immune-related proteins in blood and brain tissue samples from R. anatipestifer-infected ducks were investigated. The data showed that R. anatipestifer could cross the BBB with low-level bacteremia of 7.5 × 102 CFU/ml in infected blood. Analysis of immune-related proteins

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine mutations associated with a quinolone-resistant (QR) phenotype of Flavobacterium columnare isolates.
METHODS: The susceptibility of 53 F. columnare isolates to 11 antimicrobials, including 2 quinolones, was investigated by the disk diffusion method. Oxolinic acid (OXO) was subsequently chosen for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay. Sequence analysis of four genes within the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of OXO-resistant F. columnare compared with susceptible isolates was subsequently performed.
RESULTS: The disk

The macrolide gamithromycin (GAM) has the ability to accumulate in tissues of the respiratory tract. Consequently, GAM might be a suitable antibiotic to treat bacterial respiratory infections in poultry, such as Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. As O. rhinotracheale infections are common in turkey flocks, the aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters of GAM in plasma, lung tissue, and pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) of turkeys and to correlate them with pharmacodynamic (PD) characteristics (PK/PD). The animal experiment was performed with 64 turkeys, which

Seasonal outbreaks of airsacculitis in China's poultry cause great economic losses annually. This study tried to unveil the potential role of Avian metapneumovirus (AMPV), Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) and Chlamydia psittaci (CPS) in avian airsacculitis. A serological investigation of 673 breeder chickens and a case-controlled study of 430 birds were undertaken. Results showed that infection with AMPV, ORT, and CPS was highly associated with the disease. The correlation between AMPV and CPS were positively robust in both layers and broilers. Finally, we determined the co-infection with

The current investigation presents the first case report of Bergeyella zoohelcum associated with respiratory tract infections in pigs in China. Two Gram-negative bacterial isolates with bacillus morphology were isolated from the heart and lung samples of two pigs having respiratory symptoms in two separate cases. The isolates were identified as B. zoohelcum using morphological, biochemical, and molecular approaches, including 16 S rRNA sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) revealed that the B. zoohelcum isolates exhibit multi-drug resistance (MDR) patterns, particularly the B. zo

BACKGROUND: Columnaris disease, a prevalent disease among farmed and wild freshwater fish, is caused by the Flavobacterium columnare group, which includes four distinct species: F. columnare, F. oreochromis, F. covae, and F. davisii. Among these, F. oreochromis, F. covae, and F. davisii are particularly prevalent in farmed freshwater fish in Thailand. In this study, a comparative genomic analysis of 22 isolates was conducted to elucidate virulence factors, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), genomic islands (GIs), phages, insertion elements (ISs), and clustered regularly interspaced short pali

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is one of the most important respiratory pathogens of poultry, notably in turkeys, while Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is the etiologic agent of infectious serositis, the most economically significant disease of domestic ducks and, to a lesser extent, geese and turkeys. Currently, little is known about ORT and RA infections in Moroccan poultry. Thus, the main aim of this study was to describe ORT incidence in Moroccan poultry flocks during the period from 2019 to 2023 and gain better insights into genetic characteristics in combination with assessment of a

NOD-like receptors are significant contributors to the immune response of fish against different types of pathogen invasion. NOD1 and NOD2 genes of yellow catfish (Tachysurus fulvidraco) were identified and characterized in this study. Yellow catfish NOD1 and NOD2 have open reading frames (ORFs) of 2841 and 2949 bp, encoding 946 and 982 amino acids, respectively. Both NOD1 and NOD2 are intracellular proteins lacking transmembrane regions and signal peptides. Sequence homology analysis revealed that the protein sequences of NOD1 and NOD2 of yellow catfish are highly similar to those of channel

Riemerella anatipestifer, which causes New Duck Syndrome, poses a significant threat to poultry production, causesing respiratory distress, neurological signs, and septicemia primarily in ducks and occasionally chickens. R. anatipestifer outbreak control requires knowledge about their genetic diversity, serotypes, and antibiotic profiles, which are currently unavailable. In this study, R. anatipestifer was isolated from ducks and chickens in Thailand between 2021 and 2023 to characterize their genetic relatedness, antimicrobial profiles, and resistance genes. Seven different serotypes were ide

Riemerella anatipestifer infection causes septicemia and polyserositis in poultry, leading to serious economic losses to the global poultry industry. The ability to break through the host complement defense barrier is an important characteristic of R. anatipestifer. However, the underlying mechanisms are still not well understood at present. This study identifies outer membrane protein 85, a conserved member in the OMP family, as a key mediator that recruits of host complement regulatory factor vitronectinto inhibit formation of the membrane attack complex allowing R. anatipestifer to evade ho

Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer) causes severe perihepatitis, pericarditis, airsacculitis and meningitis in the duck, leading to great economic losses worldwide. Given the increased prevalence of drug-resistance strains, vaccination is the best strategy to prevent R. anatipestifer infection in ducklings. In this study, we identified a gene in R. anatipestifer (B739-2187) that can restore the resistance of the Salmonella phoP mutant to polymyxin B using genetic complementation. Furthermore, the deletion of B739-2187 in R. anatipestifer resulted in a mutant exhibiting increased sensit

Characterization of 20 Flavobacterium psychrophilum strains isolated from farmed Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout in Chile was done using phenotypic, antigenic and genetic techniques. Experimental infections were also performed to assess the virulence of two representative isolates and of the type strain. Biochemical and physiological analyses showed that Chilean F. psychrophilum strains, regardless of the host species, constitute a phenotypically very homogeneous group matching with previous descriptions of this pathogen. However, serological assays indicated the existence of antigenic heter
